Does one have to secure rights to harvest ice from a certain body of water, like you would with a mine or other resources?

    1. Great video. Love the process. Back to the days of yesteryears. 2. Love the music! Pickin’ on Phish. Tweezer. 3. What is RDC? 4. What are y’all gonna do with that ice? Is it just for historical demonstration? Or do people still use ice boxes? I would presume you can’t sell this for consumption since it is from a lake. Any info would be appreciated!

It's cooling ice, not drinking ice.

What is the meaning of this? Please explain (I know the ice was used b4 fridges to keep food cool.) But what is the reason in the 21st century.

#99PI's excellent episode on the global ice trade linked me here. Perhaps someone will one day create a documentary on it?

No, the ice is used in antique ice boxes to keep food and drinks cold. It is an historic tradition that continues on at RDC.

Kristoff and the other ice harvesters used to cut blocks of them to be sold down at the village so they could cool down and preserve food. Some of the ice actually made its way to far-flung places like in the Philippines if I may recall.

@@queen-elsa-arendelle yeah but they're not cheap and delivering it would take like 1-2 months plus depending on weather like if there's a storm/typhoon

Wtf? Chainsaws for cutting ice??? I'm sure that bar and chain oil is beneficial for the environment....get a clue people...I mean really shame on you.

No chain and bar oil was ever used in these chainsaws. The water lubricates the bar, so please don't shame us without the facts.
