To be fair, Kryten calling it a sex change operation is on point because after the surgery, they would be capable of becoming pregnant (whereas right now they cannot). So, *literally* changing their sex.

If I remember correctly, he doesn't explain how they're supposed to procreate, though, he basically just describes bottom surgery. Granted, they do talk later about how Kryten is losing his mind, so the whole conversation probably shouldn't count for anything =P

My reasoning is I got the implication that the medi-tech from the Delta 7 was advanced enough to create a fully-functioning female reproductive system and rewrite the person’s sex on a genetic level, but only after the ‘snips and folding’ has been done by Kryten.

If you're gonna be offended, then be offended at the bloke who wrote the script. End of the day, he's not trying to be offensive. He likely has 0 idea people would be offended by it. Most people wouldnt know others would be offended by it. In fact, ive never heard anyone be offended by it before.

I find it funny that Rimmer said "smart alex" when he has in fact already said "smart alek" before XD I know it's because the writers are like "continuity? who's she?" but I like to think that it's Rimmer having a brief slip-up and Kryten just having no filter because he's so used to correcting Rimmer on everything. So, of course, the hit to his ego made him say "smarmy" instead of "smarty" in the next line.

I think the memory erasure scene is a callback to the scene at the beginning of “Confidence and Paranoia” where Holly asks Lister to erase the works of Agatha Christie, then doesn’t remember asking Lister to erase them.

Part of me suspects they chose Anubis because they figured more people would have heard of him than Bast, but after “Black Panther” made a billion dollars I would think more people would at least know Bast was associated with cats.

Now that all the legal disputes are over with new red dwarf will be on the way and it doesn't feel like 3 years since TPL aired.

The slime came back home.

I loved the visual gags in this episode. I remember that I also did a double take when I heard the names of the cats.

This special is mostly Doug Naylor challenging himself as to how many cat gags he can make in one story lol

With the Anubis stone, the cats learned from red dwarfs data, like how they used Listers washing list as a guide (and 1 ship crashed) and Fiji/fuschal, it gets mixed up

Brilliant writing and theme pickup. Genius. Epic level character and Red Dwarf universe development.

Dunno how to feel about them splitting up Promised Land into three episodes. I really liked it as this hour and a half feature length special TV movie but I guess it allows Dave to have more Red Dwarf episodes to air so I’m not complaining

In season 10 there was an episode where through several events Lister legally became registered as Dave Lister Jnr so technically he never smuggled Frankenstein on Red Dwarf his dad did so the reason they had to abandon ship doesn't quite add up.

His punishment was 6 months in stasis because that's how long it was supposed to be before Red Dwarf would get back to Earth. Presumably he'd've been brought out of stasis and given the Order of the Boot then.

As Red Dwarf is a UK show almost no one in the UK would use the phrase gender reassignment surgery and that joke would've fallen completely flat in they had.

Nice to see you again Deena. This first part of Promised Land is . . . where I part ways with Red Dwarf. It had a good run but now, to me anyway, it's just kinda sad to see these performers I love be so tired and old. And the writing is tired and old. And there's nowhere new for Red Dwarf to go now, other than an ending. But there is no ending. They're gonna keep going until the money runs out. Weirdly though, catching up with the Cat people is where I thought it should have gone ages ago. So I guess I can't be pleased. Damn. Still, I'll watch your review of the rest of it.

Presumably the Cat would still identify as a male even if he was made through some science fiction technology to have a biological capable body with which to bear Listers child, so in this instance gender reassignment is not accutate either.

Yes, paused the video to comment just that. Also the phrase "became a woman" is something I would normally consider offensive and rather ignorant, but in this case it is accurate as Cat is not a woman in a male body but rather a naturally born male, whom Kryten is proposing change his biological sex, indeed becoming a biological woman, purely so he and Lister can breed. I am quite excited by the prospect that some future civilisation has perfected GRS to the point that a trans person could be given a fully functioning biological body of the appropriate sex. That could save the lives and sanity of many future trans people. x

But he only mentions changing genitals, he doesn't mention where the uterus is going to come from. In the end, I think the whole joke is that he's saying stupid things because he's malfunctioning.

You have to admit Kryten merrily suggesting that the solution to Listers downward spiral is for Cat to have a sex change operation is pretty funny no matter how you look at it.

I don't want to be insensitive, but if Kryten is talking about modifying e.g. the DNA of the Cat to have XX chrosomes and to give him a womb, then I think we are talking about changing sex rather than gender.

FYI--Anubis, for the cat people, IS, in fact, A CAT-HEADED GOD! Why wouldn't it be? I mean, there's no WAY they'd worship anything other than someone who looks like themselves. Humans' Anubis was a jackal-headed God...it makes sense that the cat Anubis would be cat-headed. The only NON-cat God they had would of course be Lister! Just a thought...

I think he has access to some sort of android database/google search thing to tell him these things--like when he researched what happened to America in Tikka to Ride, and when he understood what the DNA machine was.

He said "Anubis is" not "according to the cat people, Anubis is"--if they wanted us to think that he was talking about some other Anubis, they would have had him specify that. The writer either fucked up or intentionally ignored that Anubis is supposed to be a jackal. You can have whatever headcanon you want, but it's pretty clear that they just didn't care about accuracy.

I got this strange feeling that they used his DNA while he was in stasis , and mixed it with his cat in hopes of keeping the human race alive . That might explain why they worship him , but it doesn't explain WHO did it? Some unknown third party . Notice that all the cats are like european , or african version of him like they split apart , and remerge.

As it is obvious he is of mixed ancestry it looks like his dna was split down the middle and given life in new forms. potentially an attempt to keep a concept of human life going. It is just a fun way to think about it that keeps me brain entertained at night.

It's an outdated term that confuses sex with gender, hence why no one uses it anymore. For the record, I DID say *"I don't know* if this is offensive", since I'm not trans myself, it just seems like it would be. You're free to disagree.

I am surprised no one has mensioned jesus was not 23 in 23ad, he would have been 23 + the age he died at. The writers must be as old and senile as holly, repeating things from the past and often making mistakes.

Just googled this: ""A.D." stands for anno domini, Latin for “in the year of the lord,” and refers specifically to the birth of Jesus Christ." So, yes, Christ WOULD have been 23 in 23 A.D.. It doesn't mean "after death".
