RCA Living Stereo Spectacular! The Power of the Orchestra Shootout! OG, Quintessence, Chesky and AP!

Музыка

In this video, I examine several editions of one of the rarest and most sought after titles in the Living Stereo series, The Power of the Orchestra, which features two orchestral blockbusters from Moussorgsky - Night on Bare Mountain and Pictures At An Exhibition. These readings are by Rene Leibowitz and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The album was engineered by Kenneth Wilkinson. In the lineup are two original first pressings, a Quintessence budget reissue, the Chesky Records reissue, the Analogue Productions 45 mastered by George Marino and the latest 33 mastered by Ryan K Smith at Sterling.

I'm surprised more people don't get into modding hi fi equipment.. A lot of people get into souping up and fine tuning their cars just to hear it purr a little nicer. With audio equipment modding, you don't get grease all over you, or put yourself in danger of a multiple ton vehicle falling on you. I guess they are too impressed & in awe of the prestigious badge and entry fee of audio equipment that's super hyped. But there's always a down to Earth reason for everything that happens on this planet of ours. Pass Labs or VTL or Krell sound as good as they do, not because of magic or fame, but for down to Earth reasons. It's surprising that more audiophiles don't try to figure it out. What some of these reasons are. The second a mod guy takes off the top cover of the equipment, he can see just how smart or not smart it's laid out. With further inspection he can see all kind of things they could have done better, usually. It's not fun parting with large sums of money, when you can greatly improve your signal integrity yourself. Even speakers. If you buy speakers that cost $1500 a pair, do you think you're getting $300 drivers inside ithem? With the cost of manufacture generally being around 1/5 of what the dealer price is, which is much lower still and often a fraction of the retail price. Do the math. There is the same kind of satisfaction in tuning or improving your stereo as there is in fine tuning an automobile. Only more so. What song whose lyrics mentions souping up cars are these lines from? "Some guys they just give up on living. They start dying little by little piece by piece." Life is short. It's not over till it's over. Look at the world with the wonder of a child to see all you're missing. And realize what a great gift life is. Go for the gusto. Even in these times where all human life could be extinguished by one press of a button by a mad man.

Well, that is what HiFi/audiophiles did in the 1950s and 1960s. There were kits to build amps, preamps, speakers and cabinets. There was much more DIY audio with that generation in the golden era of HiFi/stereo.

It was like way back in the hall. The reading can't compare. Reiner's Pictures is a great one too, but this is more fun. You've got to hear it.. thanks for taking a look.

that is one I've never owned. in the early 90s I was hounding out record stores, garage sales, etc for RCA Shaded Dogs always looking for my favorites. I came away with some absolutely amazing sounding records, even compared to the best coming out today! How did they do that?! I mean Pink Panther-HS! my favorite was Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D by Jascha Heifetz , which I found several of, and cherish. Chad came out with a reissue which is fantastic. So yeah, I get it. Keep up these great videos.

@@ThePressingMatters I have 2 original shaded dog copies. One actually without major signs of ring wear on a black cover which must be rare. The Reiner is the better interpretation I think of the two, but as you say the sonic thrills factor is higher on the other. I also have the Reiner version on SACD which is great sonically. If my memory serves me correct that is a disc that they give you so many additional Reiner tracks, some I'd never heard, and they are so good. Actually there are better interpretive versions than either of those "Pictures" but with sound quality taken into consideration those are nice choices. It seems like the RCAs recorded in England, including Pictures are on the brighter side. Surprising a bit, since most recordings made there make US pressings sound bright. The rock group Emerson Lake and Palmer did a complete version of Pictures in more of a rock style with the organ substituting for much of the orchestral instruments. Have you heard that one?

@@ThePressingMatters I know, and that makes sense considering your thing is called The Pressing Matters. I was just listening to the Living Stereo Gershwin American In Paris/Rhapsody In Blue. The reel tape beats the LP for sound by so much. Of my many LP versions of this music, I have one where there are 2 people (4 hands) playing the notes. Gershwin For Four Hands its called or something. Pictures is often paired with A Night On Bald Mountain, which was more frequently called A Night On Bare Mountain on really old recordings. That music is featured in far more modern settings like movies and commercials than Pictures, and is arguably the more recognized of the two pieces. It's nice that vinyl people who like great sound have options like that. Where are they gonna find a pristine copy of the original? And I don't think.I even ever seen that Quintessence. I used to buy those sometimes. They sounded a little solid state and squaky, but a pretty nice listen and they were cheap. I remember I had about 10 of them. An Earl Wild, a Tchaikovsky Sym.4 with Monteux, Daphnis & Chloe, before I found originals.. The Cheskys sounded too smoothed over on my system and another guys system who has Spendor speakers and real expensive top of the line B&W speakers. The 1st time I heard the classical Pictures At An Exhibition, I was new to classical music. I think it was the original Reiner pressing. Once I got into classical music more, I heard the Kubelik on Mercury in mono. It was MG 50000, so I guess its was their first classical title. The more I played it, the more I got into the music. My RCA Reiner was not in great condition. Bad condition can make you think like you don't like the music. When I heard an original Power Of The Orchestra, I could hear what all the excitement was about. The clean brass and dynamics in particular impressed me. Just the other day I see that Decca has released a half speed mastered LP of the Kubelik Pictures. In one place the info says it was recorded in 1952, in which case it would be mono. In another place it says it was recorded in 1956, where it could be stereo. The original first Living Stereo LSC 1806 Also Sprach was recorded in November 1954 in stereo, even though stereo lps were several years away yet. Reel tape people had stereo releases before LP people. Although experiments in stereo go back to the 1930s or earlier.

It's nice that the mono Pictures is available again, after all it is the record from which the term Living Presence was coined. @@ThePressingMatters Is it really that we want better sound that badly? Or is it something else going on inside? Like for instance when I do a modification, the thought never even seriously occurs to me that if I really like what its does; that's it. That if I really like the sound; I'm done. That never seriously occurs to me at all. I just have to keep pushing the envelope further and further. I'm not done till I'm old and gone. Like some of these old rock stars from the sixties that just keep on going. Maybe all us audiophiles have a subconscious desire to be a rock star, or something like that, and if we can't really be that superstar, we want our audio system and sound quality to be one, to go someplace special. Somewhere out of the ordinary. Some extraordinary place where we've never been before. Maybe a place where nobody has been before. Some kind of ultimate pinnacle. Maybe we need to tell our subconscious that even if we ever do get to the point where in reality we can actually reproduce a rock concert in our living room, it won't be us at the microphone. It will be someone else. From somewhere else and from long ago. It just seems like there's something else; something underneath this overwhelming desire to attain sound glory and some kind of out of this world greatness..Not just wanting great sound, but some strong undercurrent below it. Some experts say what is going on with us in your daily lives is 90% subconscious. I keep modifying and spending my time. While others who don't know how to do what I'm doing, spend their money; lots of it, in big sums on equipment and now records. They really throw a fortune away. And it is getting even more expensive. Way expensive. Out of this world expensive. Maybe someone really wise and realistic should sit us all down and break it to us, to our subconscious and inner being, that we'll never be that rock star. Or aren't we ready to hear that yet? Will we still want to go on doing what we're doing, when our "whole" being realizes it?

@@ThePressingMatters Fortunately for me its mostly an investment in my time. Thinking up new ideas to improve the signal integrity, the isolation of the equipment, the acoustics etc. But for most it's big amounts of money. I feel bad for them. At some point, prices really take advantage of people. Exotically priced phono cartridges are the most obvious example. How much expense can there be making a phono cartridge? That was the first tell tale sign that what something is priced at has little to do with what it costs to make. It stated becoming obvious that it's based on how many people out there want better sound bad enough to pay for it. It evolved into what it is today. The idea that people should pay awful big amounts of money for a company's research and development is BS. You're a company, do as much research and development as you want, but you pay for it. Audiophiles don't ask equipment companies to pay for their electric bill each month. Its crazy. With my experience in modding, I kind of know if a creative idea will work before I even try it, and I'm almost always right. The more experience, the better your predictability, by far. I'm almost never wrong on it. I just don't know to what degree it will improve things. I guess the thing that keeps the wheel spinning is that the improvements never stop; they keep coming without any end in sight. That's what's exciting. I used to do a numerical thing to estimate just where I'm at with my modified less expensive stuff compared to the sound quality of the real expensive stuff I've listened to at length. I'll write about that some day.

The best selling classical music piece of all time is supposed to be Vivaldi: The Four Seasons according to what's considered good sources. I have only found the 4 seasons LSC once; which probably makes it a rare record.Yet I can't imagine it being a better seller than something like Tchaikovskys Nutcracker, based on how many used cds and lps you see of that. Beethoven Symphony 9 is supposed to be the second best selling classical pieces of all time and that's a little hard to fathom also. Based on my knowledge of The Living Stereo catalog and what comes to mind right now, I've listed below Living Stereo titles that 2 totally different performances were released as Living Stereo records. I'm sure there are some I can't think of right now. Scott, can you add to my list below? Strauss: Also Sprach... Offenbach: Gaite Parisienne Tchaikovsky:The Nutcracker Brahms: Piano Concerto 2 Rimsky Korsakoff: Scheherazade Pictures At An Exhibition Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 3 Any others?...

You know your RCA. I thought there was 2 Daphnis, and Berlioz: Symphony Fantastique, LSC1900 which was listed in their catalog, to the best of my knowledge the original LP has never been seen; the "re-release" by Classic Records or whoever, could have actually been the "original release" in stereo. Some well known collector from Now York was offering a $35,000 reward for an original LSC 1900, since none were known to exist. There also were a few cover changes with they shaded dog RCA LPs, but the same performance. There was a Rubinstein LSC cover of him sitting at the piano in a field, and another cover of the same record with him inside and close up at the piano. Also the titles Overture Overture and Gilbert & Sullivan Overtures had their covers changed and spruced up. There could be others that I don't know or can't think of right now. Mercury Living Presence had more creative covers, and many think they had clearer sound, but they had a hi-fi sounding peak because of the cutter head they were using. The Mercury factory recorded reel tapes show that this peak was not on the master tape. HP, the TAS editor for years considered the Mercury Living Presence SR 90000 series as the best sound ever afforded classical music. The rarer Mercury SR titles were rarer than the bigger label RCA LSC hardest to find titles. Some of the Mercury conductors took to writing their own symphonies and Mercury recorded and released their works as Living Presence titles. Do you know what conductors held in their hand to conduct their orchestra before conductors batons/wands came into use?

@@sidesup8286 i have both versions of the covers that were changed. I was really lucky to scoop up so many at the time I was collecting these. Another one with a cover change was the Van Cliburn LSC 2601, the Rachmaninoff Piano Cto 2, which went from a color painting of Rachmaninoff to a black and white image of Van Cliburn. There's a few others I can't think of now. Fascinating stuff!. I do not know the answer to your question. Chopsticks? Lol!

@@ThePressingMatters I found a few German pressings of LSC titles. Same number, same cover pic as the U.S pressings, but that's where the similarities end. No dog on the label and no shaded dog sound. Bad pressings compared to the U.S. The German collectors knew it too. Not a sign of that glorious sweet, pure transparent string sound like on the US pressings. They were willing to pay 2 and 3 times as much as US collectors on many titles, many say. The actual front cover of the German LSC records were glossy like U.K. pressings. One of my favorite Living Stereos was Venice; not to be confused with another one called Vienna. Venice was so dynamic and well recorded. All things considered I enjoyed it as much or more than Power Of... With Georg Solti conducting music by Italian composers. RCA knew it was a special recording and you can tell by the the elaborate fanciful cover and many page booklet that came with it. The fancy album cover with booklet was later compromised; no gatefold, no lattice cut-out, no booklet. Very long ago, before any of us were born, conductors routinely conducted their symphony orchestra with..........a violin bow in hand.

@@sidesup8286 yes! Venice is a favorite of mine too. Very elaborate jacket and great sound. I remembered another cover change. I think it's the Brahms Violin Cto. Went from an old style illustration of Brahms to a green cover with a photo of Heifetz. I think Fiedler's Holiday for Strings had a change too, but I only have one version. Did you know one Living Stereo album actually came with a baton?

I am new to classical music and know very little about it. Just picked up a couple of vinyl albums based on your reviews. Classic Rock and 50’s/60’s Jazz makes up the majority of my collection.

@@scottroesinger4666 Thats so great, Scott. I'm glad my journey with classical can help guide you. I am approaching the classical series with the beginner in mind. I'm focusing on the most desirable labels in terms of sound and performance, from the golden age of classical recording. That coincides with the dawn of stereo, around 1958 and moving forward into the early 80's. Labels such as RCA, Decca/London, and EMI will form a larger share of the offerings but not to the exclusion of other worthy releases. I'm also considering the most accessible Music to start out with, particularly for those coming from rock or jazz background. You'll have to let me know how you like what you've chosen to get. I'd love to have a continuing dialog with you as we go through the series.
