RC51 - Testing Honda's Last True Sport Production - VTR1000 SP2 / RVT1000R SP2
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
A comprehensive Hugger-to-Hugger review, history, walk-around, and ride of Honda's RC51 SP2 RVT1000R / Honda VTR1000 SP2
It was Y2K and Honda’s 4 cylinders had been losing to Ducati who was enjoying a displacement advantage with its 996cc L-twins in 750cc World Superbike. So Honda designed a purpose-built WSBK Ducati killer, and in 2000, Honda and Colin Edwards did just that; beating Bayliss and Bostrom on the Ducati 996. Fantastico!

Joey Dunlop won his last couple races at the Isle of Man in 2000 on a RC51. To honor him there are 2 statues on the island of Joey sitting on a SP1. Valentino Rossi won his first and last Suzuka 8 hour along side Collin Edwards on a SP1. I thought that was pretty cool. Such an amazing success story that bike is! Thanks for the video

I had a 2003 and put 15,000 miles on it. An Ohlins rear shock is a must have. Other than being heavy by today's standards and prone to overheating in traffic (side mounted radiators with fans that need reversing to work properly) it's a fantastic bike. It absolutely rails at speed. Rock solid front. Engine is bulletproof. Torque in every gear (6th is almost useless) and every rpm. I sold mine for the same price I paid for it after 10 years of ownership. It had so many unobtanium parts on it I had a hard time relaxing on the bike. I could have parted it out for more than the bike was worth, but why destroy a piece of art.

So beautiful bike.
This damn algorithm's scary good. As an SP2 owner (2003), I can't remember ever looking up RC videos on here (it's too old for anything of interest & I know it well enough that I've never looked up "how to" videos or anything like that) and yet the KZread had this in my top recommended just now. Very cool. Thanks for giving the platform a little love. Thumbs up and a "subscribe." And to echo your comments on the current pricing, I picked mine up in '016, ~12k mi, original fairings w/out a scratch & overall excellent condition. $3500 iirc & there were a handful for sale in my search area (2 states) that ran the gamut of mileage and condition ($1500 for beat and up). Lately they seem to be $3500 for the cheapest beat example w/junk ebay bodywork & 35k mi. I could ramble on about the RC's for days but surely no one's even made it this far. Cheers!

Such a cool bike. From those years I preferred the CBR954RR for the all around Sports bike. It was faster, gobs of torque, and happier to ride around town. However, owning a track purposed race bike on the streets on the RC51 was way unique. I also loved the way they sounded like a helicopter landing at idle with the right exhaust.
@FancyAnimal

Both cool bikes. I don't think a 954 is faster around a track than an RC51...maybe at the top end of a straight line. Power commander makes the around town habits between the bikes the same.
Job well done.
My RC51 sits in my shop looking good and every once in a while I think I should sell it as I don’t ride it enough. Then I take it out for a rip up the twisty mountain highway by my place and declare I’ll never sell it. I also have an RD 350 LC track bike and a 996 Super Hawk.

This isn't the same but it will be nice to have a race inspired bike again. Currently riding (1 of 7 bikes) a high mileage Superhawk. It's fun and reliable but a bit of a beater. I'm pretty excited to have filled my wish list. I'm done. Finally done with the wishing.😁 P.S. Just realized I had committed before on this video. Instead of just watching, I'm doing my pre-purchase research. Due to parking space. I'll have to send the Superhawk down the road. The next owner will get a solid bike for a good price. Not only is the RC51 coming home. So is a DRZsm. Two of my wish-list bikes to complete the list. Maybe I'll do a walk-around with the two bikes soon. I'll include the recently acquired ZRX1200 as well. Good Lord this place is getting full.😎

@@FancyAnimal The RC30 is highly appreciated because of its rarity and exotic makeup. Also have to compare it to the counterparts of it's day. Mine was a 1990. That was the end of the run so it was really a 1988 bike. The last 300 came to the States. I agree. The Superhawk is underrated fun.

@@franktaylor7617 there are certain bikes that have the pedigree and the performance to match their perceived value, like a 916, Desmo RR, or 675 Daytona. The RC30 isn’t worth 10k, let alone the 40 or 50k these collectors are shelling-out. There are a lot of people buying stuff for the totemic idea of what something is, rather than the reality of what it actually is. The ego is a hell of a drug.

@@FancyAnimal There's a lot of people that would disagree with you. We're all entitled to voice an option. Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Take art for example. I wouldn't pay $10 of some of that crap. I might pay $10 hauled away from my front yard. Yet people pay thousands of not hundreds of thousands. The RC30 is worth what people pay for them. Not liking its performance or thinking it's overrated doesn't change anything. It IS a very limited production race bike. Meant for endurance racing, not sprints. Maybe the OW01 is overrated too? In my opinion. Anyone thinking the RC30 doesn't perform well compared to a completely newer or different class of booked. Simply doesn't understand what the RC was intended to be. With that being said. Opinions are like bellybuttons and a$$ holes. Everybody has at least one.

@@FancyAnimal P.S. I passed on the RC51SP2. It did have some nice upgrades but it's covered in Chinese knockoff bodywork. The guy never mentioned it and I failed to ask. Some sketchyness with the title lead me to believe it was a wrecked rebuild or X race bike. Even with almost $2000 off the asking price. I was no longer interested. 400 Mile drive round trip. Nevertheless I did end up with the DRZsm for a fair price. The RC51 will have to wait until I find the right bike. I'm in no hurry. The Superhawk will fill the twin cylinder slot for now. 👍
