    Razer would have been much better off making a reboot of their original Edge Pro to go head to head with the Steam Deck

  • @OmairArif

    Even then they would struggle unless they go the premium angle. No one can really compete with the Steam Deck because like a console, Valve is able to sell the thing on razor thin margins with the expectation of making the profit on future game sales.

    @4:00" You guys should really mention that Razer only updated that chart to 6GB for the Wifi version AFTER they started selling them - for months prior (and during the pre-order window) they advertised the Wifi model as 8Gb RAM - AND the "New G3x Gen 1" that promised the latest Adreno GPU is actually just an SD888 - AND it doesn't support exFAT format, so running anything off the Sd card bigger than 4GB is a no-go.

    Even Running PS1 games and smaller PS2 games off the microsd runs slower than the internal storage

  • @grimley614

    @grimley614

    To clarify, you can still format microsd cards over 4 GB as FAT32, but each file in the card cannot be over 4 GB in size individually. So if you are not going to be storing games, ROMs, or other files over 4 GB in size, you can still utilize up to 2 TB of storage as a whole. note: support for exFAT is planned for a future update as mentioned on Razer's website, so when that is available you can store files without a size limit. (yes I know that there is technically a limit to exFAT, but with a 2 TB drive it is not possible to reach it.)

    There's two things wrong with the route Razer went: the Ayn Odin Lite is out, which also has 5G for ~$200, and is a dedicated Android gaming device, and Aya Neo is coming out with the Pocket Air, both of which can be used as dedicated cloud gaming with some emulation, and for the same price as the Razer Edge, you can get Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch. Razer is kinda shooting themselves in the foot with the price tag, but the hardware being able to be utilized with other phones is a decent idea.

    They can't simply change how economics work. Look at which phones have similar performance, they're all premium high end devices. It just looks like a poor choice when compared to the steam Deck tbh, at beast for that level of performance. And the steam Deck (and switch, even though performance wise it is actually far weaker than the Edge) has the advantage of being a platform where users can spend more money on.

    I think the idea was a nonstarter with the fact it can't do anything more than your phone already can. I mean are you really going to carry a whole second phone just to stream games? The only defense I could see is "to protect my phone battery" but you can get a $20 battery bank to solve that while this thing is $400. How is that supposed to make sense? And hardware performance barely matters at all for cloud streaming. Even if your existing phone is weaker, it probably will run the streams at the same quality as all your device needs to do is buffer a video file and ping your button inputs. I just don't see the point when you already have the same device in your pocket now and all you need is the controller.

    The biggest problem with this and other cloud gaming devices is that they are devices. Cloud gaming could totally be a huge thing, but let us use our phones. They already have similar if not better hardware in them. If they let Google Stadia run on the Pixel, they could sell more Pixels than the ever dreamed of selling Stadia controllers.

    You can use you're phone. Issue is the aspect ratio for mobile use is poor for gaming resulting in black bars reducing the phone screen size significantly. Then you add in the abysmal battery performance, reduced size of the controllers due to the size of phones, often weird heat issues for sustained loads etc etc. Depending on what you play some people might prefer a dedicated device. I'd say cloud streaming is one thing but a huge market for these is oddly in home portability for streaming your own local devices.

    You can definitely use your phone and get a better experience. The selling point of something dedicated, like this is that you're not tying your phone up and sapping your battery with a game. Is it 100% a necessity? Nah, but it's definitely something that could be a nice to have. I think the main issue with this one is the specs for the screen are great, but the processor isn't. Yeah the fold 4 is $2000 but when you get it on a payment plan through like Verizon as I did I'm only paying $90 a month it's not that hard to afford at all. The downside I have for the phone is: the screen is still a bit too small for AAA games, so things like reading text and navigating open worlds are hard on your eyes. Other competitors like Xbox, Steam Deck, Switch can sell their stuffs cheap because they can still get their profits from the software like games and their own cloud gaming. So the best mobile cloud gaming device might be the phone you've already owned (even if the specs are weak, you would rather buy a new phone with that much money)

    It's true. Most manufacturers just do some work to reskin Android. I don't think I've seen anyone tried to go from the base AOSP and reconfigure that to make it their own like what Valve has done. At the end of the day, Valve took a distribution of Debian and modified it to suit their needs. They put in the work and it shows. Someone could just as easily do the same from AOSP and custom build their hardware around it but that too would be a bigger lift than a "reskin".

    @$400 you can get a bunch of good used PC parts and have an actual gaming PC. There are deals all the time on marketplace or ebay, or craigslist. You can even get a walmart refurbished PC and add a decent gpu to it and game on it with lan connection. no crappy wifi dropping out. Yeah, you lose portability but thats just about all youd actually lose. And besides, in a year or so the steam decks will be on marketplace used for 400

    This isn't a bad product, it's just very specific. You need to be looking for exactly this in order to want it over the other options out there. It's a very niche market that they're going for and that's why it doesn't fit in anywhere else

    Basically. For the price it just can't do much to differentiate, but if you look at the hardware itself and the price, it's not really a bad deal.

    yeah this is basically perfect for me, I want a dedicated emulation and cloud streaming device. that has an OLED Screen. and this is a good value product for that. there are other options that are more versatile but I cannot stand awful IPS screens. this is by far the cheapest and most powerful device with a 120hz plus OLED that can stream reliably and play any emulated games up to wii

    You still have better options though. You could use the Work/Home profiles that most phones have nowadays to separate things or you can buy something like the Ayn Odin which isn't as powerful but costs half as much. I was doing some research about this and found that you can order an Lenovo Legion Y70 from Lenovo's store on AliExpress for $330. It is a Asia only device, so it might not work well as a phone in the west, but It will work fine as a Wifi gaming device. It is a gaming phone, so all it's specs meet or exceed that of the Razer Edge. It significantly beats the Edge in performance because it has the newer Snapdragon 8+ gen 1, while the Edge's SoC is based on the Snapdragon 888. Even when you account for the passive vs active cooling it still wins by a wide margin (based on 3D Mark's 20 minute stress test). The Y70 plus a controller roughly matches the price of the Razer Edge Wifi, depending on what controller you pick.

    The whole idea of a separate controller attached to a tablet makes lots of sense and gives amazing versatility to the device. But Razer has to improve certain things. The tablet must be at 7"+ inches (8'' like the PS portal would be amazing) otherwise as many viewers said, you can use your phone instead. In that size there is a valid reason to use the Razer instead of your phone and also to use the tablet for other content consumption. It would make perfect sense and I would buy one tomorrow as with one purchase I would have a tablet, a gaming console and a controller to use with my phone when I don't wanna carry the edge around.

    I haven't used a Steam Deck or Steam OS, but for me a few of the benifits of this I could see are: Much nicer screen (OLED, high refresh, verses what seems to be a pretty subpar screen experience on the Deck) Snappy, touch first Android interface (Steam OS seems to be pretty good in this respect, but I've got a OneXPlayer and Windows is slow to boot and using it with the touch screen only is not an amazing experience) Although honestly, the fact that it's just a screen and a Kishi is actually a major downside to me. I'm much prefer they lean into the gaming experience and give it an all it one form factor like the Ayn Odin - just with much better specs.

    Switch comparison falls apart when you look past the initial cost of entry. A single Switch game costs up to $70 USD these days. That said, a phone you already have (or will upgrade to) is a much better option. Even cheap phones have comparable specs to this.

  • @matts.8342

    @matts.8342

    However, you're paying for the cloud gaming services too. A switch at $200 gives you enough money for 5 $70 games with about $50 left (not accounting for taxes, compared to the 5G version of course). Even more if you buy the switch games used or don't buy the AAA titles at release pricing. Just think, you have your $10 data plan for the device, plus Xbox Gamepass Ultimate a $15, plus with GeForce NOW you need to already own the games you want to stream. Sure, this device gives you a different library, but it's not cheaper. It locks you into paying for gaming monthly forever (or at least until they shut down the services or remove games you want to play), instead of buying the game once on a cart and owning it. With the switch, you can pull it back out in 20 years and keep playing. Not so much with this, it will be deprecated at some point and you will have to upgrade to a new device to keep accessing the services, even for games you own and play through GeForce NOW, and even for native Android games that don't require a subscription when Google Play removes the device from their supported devices list. TLDR; Switch is a better deal, these companies are trying to get you locked in to paying for gaming as a service forever instead of just buying a device and owning it and the games free and clear.

    If you break down the price. The controller is worth 100 dollars, so then the tablet itself is 300 dollars. It’s pretty hard to find a smartphone for 300 dollars with a snapdragon 888 (which the gen 3x is an overclocked 888). I feel like Austin has a pretty good point. I have a pretty crappy android phone and a decent gaming laptop that’s more powerful than the steam deck. I feel like this device would make more sense for me than the steam deck because of the better screen and battery life. When my main use case would be emulation and maybe sometimes cloud gaming or streaming from my laptop. Not to mention I would play the hell out of league of legends wild rift on this thing.

    Portables are about to hit a nice jump in tech the next year or so. I'm going to wait until AMD releases their RDNA3 chips and upgrade to that. I'm hoping that at the end of this year or next year, we will start seeing it. 2024 is my guess, honestly. Samsung already confirmed they're going to use it in their tablets, laptops, and phones. Steam decks are 1.6 tflops, so these new devices should have a nice boost from that. While being cooler and power efficient.
