Razer Blade 15 - A Long Term User Review

Ғылым және технология

The Razer Blade 15 Advanced after its release date late year has amazing specifications, benchmark numbers and build quality. But after more than a full YEAR owning the device as a primary workstation, its time for a long term review that talks about all the experiences whether they're good, bad or just plain ugly. That will cover things like battery life, performance, customer service, some BSODs and a lot more. And now with new competitors like the Legion 7i, Acer Triton 500 and even the Dell XPS lineup, is this still really one of the best all-round gaming / productivity notebooks around?

My blade 15 had a bulging battery this month. It was warping the case so badly that the trackpad wouldn’t click. Worst of all, this happened 2 weeks after my warranty technically expired, however, Razer said they would honor it and are replacing my laptop free of charge.

I really respect when reviewers go back and present a product standing the test of time. It's easy for all these products to last the short time people normally allow for a product to be reviewed, I like to hear if those claims still hold up in everyday use.

I've watched a number of your videos and I really appreciate how conversational you are. You don't yell at the camera or gesture excessively. Your voice is actually very mellow and easy to listen to. Also, I like that you speak extemporaneously, rather than reading from a prompter. This is coming from someone who is hyper-critical about KZread hosts who annoy me.

Got the 2018 blade 15 two years ago and i still love it. i've had the blue screen maybe 3 times over the span of three years. Which is not bad, no idea what caused it in those instances but aside from that its done a great job of gaming and giving me the power needed for 3d modeling for engineering classes. I even started using it to edit some podcasts. I've keep it in good condition by cleaning the fans whenever a decent amount of dust has built up and the removable bottom plate definitely helps keep it hassle free. The one thing is the 2018 keys dont light up the secondary function keys like brightness and volume, but fortunately the 19' and 20' versions do.

I have used 5 Razer laptops over the years, the newest one I got is a 2019 blade 15. The QC was really the big problem back then, both of my 14 and 17 would overheat even playing league, but battery life was ok. The new 15 def improved thermal. But other companies also improved their design, refined their thermals, and are cheaper. I just like the aesthetic of Razer laptops.

I'm so glad you've posted this video! Strangely, even as a Blade 15 Advanced owner (early 2019; i7-8750H w/ 2070 Max - Q) I've been trying to find an analysis of the blade systems from the tech-reporter community. Coming from a 2011 MacBook Pro and as a my initial foray into the Windows ecosystem, the only criteria I had for a laptop was I wanted to find a system that could provide exceptional performance with a comparable build quality to that of the MacBook lineup. Razer definitely filled that niche, and I have to say, having owned this system for just over a year now, I've been generally pleased with the switch. To the point of build quality, I will say that I did run into some similar issues to those who are vocal in the Razer community. I had to RMA my device for a detached speaker head, and have a stuck pixel that I absolutely cannot fix. However, I will say on the customer service front, I have experienced nothing but phenomenal assistance from the Razer team. They have been more than willing to work with me on fixing the speaker issues months ago. The battery life is meh, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the platform. I've upgraded the SSD to a 1TB Evo 970, use this on a daily basis with an external monitor, can play every single triple A game at exceptional framerates. Beside the suggestions you've made (which are all wonderful) I'd like to see Razer offer their higher refresh rate OLED on the upcoming late-2020/early-2021 models, similar to the 120Hz OLED panels they have on the current Blade Pro 17's.

Been using my 2080 Blade 15 OLED 2019 for almost a year now. I echo others comments about battery life. I am lucky to get 4 hours..usually more like 2.5. I really wish the laptop could charge over USB C. I don't need to charge on USB c while gaming but it would be nice to not have to carry around the huge power brick for general web browsing on the go. Keyboard has a small learning curve, the right shift took some time to get used to. Love the OLED screen. I play games mainly on an external 27" monitor with higher refresh, so the low refresh on the OLED is not a big issue for me. I have had no BSODs yet, crossing fingers...Overall, I am still pleased with purchase.

Plays pretty much every game I throw at well above 60fps. (Gears 5, Halo MCC, NBA 2K20 etc) It's also very fast and efficient. I do all my graphic work on it. There are a few cons though. The charger, as mentioned in the video, is stupid, it gets in the way, I wish they came up with a better design for it. Fan Noise. Fan's randomly accelerate up and down if not calibrated correctly. Besides that, it's a great laptop all around and definitely a poster boy laptop for the best windows can offer if you want performance and design.

@123 321 I had to turn off Intel's "Turbo Boost" in the Bios. Pretty much eliminated all fan noise when browsing the web. It'll be a more consistent sound coming from your Laptop. Those random "jet engine" ramp ups were annoying the crap out of me. However, just know, that depending on what site you're on, the fans are destined to start running at some point. All laptops make noise...even macbooks lol Disabling the Turbo Boost the laptop won't "rev up" randomly either. Since it'll always bee running at a base clock of 2.6 Ghz. There's also a bug if your fans do start running randomly, opening up task manager will slow the fans down.

2018 Blade 15 (Advanced model) user and watching this on my blade as well. One of the things that suck the most about customer service is when you have to send it in. I live in the UK, and it takes a round trip time of 3 weeks from sending it to getting it back, which is a big hit, especially for me as my primary computing device. Recently when I opened up my laptop to upgrade my ram, I noticed that the battery was bulging and since I couldn't afford to lose my laptop for three weeks, I just swapped it myself with a third party battery. The customer service reps, on the other hand, have been understanding and good for me. That being said, I still don't think that there's really been any competition to the blade in terms of its solid looks. Sure MSI, Asus have equally powerful laptops, but I could never bring them into my work meetings without sticking out like a sore thumb in a sea of MacBooks and dell XPS's. Given how responsive they've been to the flaws of the 2018 model with 2019 and 2020 model with things such as the right shift key (super annoying) and the USB C charging as well, I would still probably consider buying a blade 15 in 2021 or 22 even if they don't offer AMD and that's saying a lot given just the sheer everyday ease of usability of the blade. I really wish other manufactures could step up to the level of design as the blade with as much power it offers.

Also when I went to install a second SSD, the screw to hold down the SSD was stuck in there *REALLY* good. I had to take it to a repair shop where they did some technological sorcery to get it out and install my SSD. Also one year later I still accidentally hit Shift + Up Arrow sometimes I go for a question mark. I hear the 2020 model resolves that.

I have the 2019 base model and honestly it works like a charm. There was an issue where my computer crashed like there was no tomorrow to the point where I got stuck in a bios loop, but that was from a faulty component- when I addressed it to them they sent me the information to send it over immediately and I got it within 2 weeks and I’ve never had a problem since. The heating does get a little absurd but I can attribute that to the fact that I’m in the attic while it’s summer. It does collect dust quicker than every other laptop I used but it’s easy to clean. It runs games for me perfectly (when plugged in of course) and it’s never struggled to maintain 60+ fps or even 120+ fps. I’ve had like no connectivity issues, lags, dips in frames or anything like that and it just feels sleeeeek. It handles running multiple applications really well and the screen is appealing to the eye... just like not outside lmao.

I currently work/game on a Razer Blade 15 Advanced Model (mid-2019), got a bloated battery after about a year or so. It was easy enough to order a replacement battery from Amazon, which works just fine. However, I must say there are some things that I did (or rather didn't) do that may have contributed to the bloating. 1) I kept it plugged in 24/7 most of the time; 2) Didn't do any sort of maintenance on it for that year, after the battery started bloating I sent it to a shop, which revealed a crazy amount of cat hair and dust inside (especially on the fans), and the thermal paste was completely dry. 3) Didn't manually adjust the fan speed on my long gaming sessions (often 4-6 hours). After the battery replacement, thermal repasting and cleaning inside, and maxing the fan speed with Razer Synapse, I was impressed with how cool the laptop was (70-75°C CPU, 60-65 °C GPU when gaming), and the performance was pretty much as good as it was when the laptop was new. I fortunately never had a problem with BSODs, the few ones that I got occurred when I undervolted the CPU more than I was supposed to (ended up just keeping the original undervolt, no BSODs since). Still love this machine and I don't regret buying it, as it delivers the performance that I wanted for games, and it's a pleasure to work on. I'll definitely be sending it to the shop for maintenance every 6 months to keep it clean and to re-apply thermal paste.

When I'm on battery, I disable turbo mode and not only is it quiet, but it also provides better thermals, and better battery life. Speaking of battery, the cooler temps when disabling turbo would most likely prevent the bloated battery issues. On the battery unit itself, it says "don't expose over 65c". I just keep an eye on temps and make sure it doesn't go above 65-70c.

And then on top of that I had to work on getting the razer care transferred over to the new units, because the razer care had not started yet and that process was also awful. They definitely need way better customer support. Some of these mistakes could be easily forgiven if they had amazon-like customer support.

Completely to agree with this; from start to end, it took 2 whole months before my unit was repaired. Thermals in the 2018 models are so bad I feel it should be recallable and it seems razer agrees, as after mentioning this in an angry email after a month of pointless back and forth (with presumably an automated service), razer immediately escelated my case and the unit was fixed within a further 2 weeks... You simply cant be treating a customer base like this when they've invested litterally thousands into one of your products!

Bought Blade 15 with RTX 2070 max-q and 240hz screen, upgraded SSD with 1TB 970 evo plus, RAM with 32GB 2666mhz CL 15. Been using for last 8 months and its working solid. Had few BSODs from undervolting to -0.160v, -0.150v, set to 0.140v and works fine.

That's why even though I get tempted by the design of Razer blade from time to time, I still go to proper/experienced hardware manufacturers like Asus and Dell. I mean they are not perfect or anything, but at least there are certain characteristics that you can expect from them as they have a longer list of records.

I have a 2019 Razer blade base model with a 60hz screen and 1660ti, and I gotta say that I love it. I have upgraded to a 500gb nvme, 1tb SSD, and 32 of ram. Easy upgrades, but my problem with it is that the paint chips to easy and the speakers and keyboard trap to much junk. It is extremely hard to clean sometimes.

I’ve owned several Blade 15’s and ran into issues with most of them. On my 144hz 2080MQ model the screen has different hues on the left and right. Might be an issue with the factory calibration but is very noticeable on white websites. Literally each half of the screen looks like it was calibrated differently (could be a bad backlight). Secondly I find lightning devices don’t receive enough power from the lightning port and bug out (m.2 enclosure connects and disconnects rapidly and isn’t related to the port snugness) on my first razer it worked just fine. I recently upgraded to the newest 300hz 2080 super model and ran into weird performance issues. For instance out of the box overwatch runs at ~200 fps. If I unplug the laptop while gaming the frames drop to 32 which is expected. I disable the GeForce battery saver and it still stays at 32 (at that point it should jump to 60). Once I plug the laptop back in the FPS will either stay at 32 or sometimes will go up to ~ 95 and no higher. I’ve tried everything imaginable including software updates on GeForce/synapse/intel, updated the bios, rebooted. I even uninstalled the driver for the power controller. Nothing would get the performance back. At that point I exchanged it as I thought it was a lemon. Got the replacement and the same issues plagued this one. At this point I believe it’s a synapse software issue with the optimus stuff not allowing the gpu to run correctly. I gave up on razer at this point and I’m preparing it for return as we speak. Bought a Zepherus G14 for half the price of the razer and have been very happy with the little power house. Razer makes beautiful laptops but I’ll be damned if I pay a premium for a headache.

I had the same BSOD issue. I ran all the internal tests in the world and the blade alone couldn’t find the problem. Then I downloaded Intel Driver Assistant which found 3 updates that solved the problem completely. It’s annoying that I had to go outside of the machine to diagnose it properly.

I still have the 2018 advanced model. The pros: great screen, good performance for me, great looks and build quality. The cons: I don't know if it's just my unit, but speakers are very underwhelming, they sound too compressed even on lower volumes (20-30), and above 90 they distort. Had screen issues six months in, ENDLESS back and forth with customer support for 4-5 months before sending it for repairs. I got it back a couple of weeks later, panel replaced, but with sloppy assembly (bezel squished and not glued properly at one corner), trackpad not flush with the body (one side dipped) and can't be clicked anymore, well it can, but now you need to engage your shoulder and back muscles for it. The screen is also slightly bent on one side which is only seen when the lid is closed. Let me remind you this is not a cheap laptop, and I get there can be defective units, but the customer support is the reason why my next laptop won't be a Razer. Edit: an hour later I discovered that one of the symptoms of a swollen battery is actually a protruding trackpad, so there's that.
