I miss Ray! Feels like I'm watching a video of a family member who passed. We used to watched him daily.

You and me both. Every morning growing up. The start of the second cartoon was my signal to walk to school in my elementary years.

So wonderful to see him in the seventies jumpsuit compete with the notes attached to him...

What a telling clip, even 15 years later Ray is as fun and personable as ever(even with the duck!),while Sarat and his wannabe co-host are as fun as was watching paint dry.I can only imagine nobody else showed up when they auditioned, they remind me of that other Chicago snorefest George Wendt...but Ray Rayner was one of a kind,a gem!

Fox Thing in the Morning was a good show. And while they didn't have the chemistry of WGN, for a few years there, it was the thing to watch in the morning.

It must have been that winter of 78-79 when I remember Ray's starting and the set is empty. Then, Ray walks on and he has shaving cream on his face and he's still shaving. "Ol' Ray got in late and still has to shave, kids." When Chicago gets snow, it gets it good.

I do, too. He was just such a real and genuine person. I'm sure more adults watched the show than kids. I keep looking for that clown song from the Boz, Gar, and Ray special on KZread. I'd love to see that again.

@@525Lines Watching him in the 60's on his 4 WGN kids shows, it is hard to believe he was a WWII POW for 2-1/2 years.

@@tytrehalf5354 He was in the POW camp that inspired the movie The Great Escape. Also, one time, trying to promote some Buck Rogers shorts they were going to show, he came on camera with a flight cap and a leather jacket. I figured that was his Air Corps gear.

His job for the escape at Stalag Luft III was disposing of the tunnel dirt. Prior to the escape he was transferred by forced march to another POW camp. It was at this camp that he was liberated by Patton's troops. There are a few interviews of him talking about his POW camp experiences. It was in the camps where the entertainment/acting bug bit him. He and Cuddly Dudley read my letter on the air. He sent a post card reply. He was the best.

@@tytrehalf5354 He once mentioned he had written a chapter in a book about TV and I was trying to track down the book. This is before the internet. I found someone at WGN that would pass on a note to Ray on my behalf. Ray actually sent me a brief handwritten note about it.

Remember how Marianne Marciano would say "I saw the most interesting thing in the Sun Times." Then she tries to find the article and flips a page and flips a page and can't find it, looking slightly panicked. then goes, "I'll look for it later."
