I was about to undergo heart surgery when a nurse asked, " Who is your favorite artist? I said Ray LaMontane. A few minutes later, a song was blaring through overhead speakers. As I was being prepped, the outcome of the surgery was unclear so I enjoyed Ray's music one more time as it were my last. It wasn't and I'm a fan for life.

I listened to this album while driving late one summers night between Charleston, SC and Savanna, GA....all alone, on my own schedule, with the windows down and Ray’s voice on full volume. It was an utterly intoxicating experience.

My 75 yr old platonic friend, Mr. Hap, played this song for me when I was wound up. It still calms me down. He died of cancer a year ago. Bernard Baston was real gentleman. I listened to this nonstop after the earthquake in Haiti in 2010. My best friend was in the UN building when I collapsed. For 17 days we hoped against hope that we’d find him. One of the worst days of my life when we discovered he didn’t make it. This song still makes me weep but I’ll always be grateful for my dear friend and everything we shared. 😢

Something about his music takes me back to being a child. riding through the mountains thinking every little thing I saw was as mighty as they are, as I could be sometimes. every laugh from my siblings was pure joy just like every new discovery and glimpse I got. I’m so sorry your feeling this way. I struggled with depression off and on for most of my life. Hated the meds, so self medicated for a while. But, ultimately I conquered it, I think. For me it was the revelation that those intense emotions can be brought on by a physiological, chemical imbalance. So, now when those dark thoughts and sinking emotions creep in, I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel if I am proactive about intervention. This might not apply to you at all, but I wanted to share just in case it resonates. One thing I know we have in common is that we’re moved by music in a substantial way. That is a blessing, my friend. I hope you find your peace.
