This song is immortal. This is why WICHITA LINEMAN resonates so much. When you hear the story behind the Wichita Lineman up on that lonely reach, whom the original writer of the song encountered on that stretch of Kansas hignway, you begin to understand why the storytelling squeezes the listener's emotions -- a lonely lineman's message to his lover. Glen Campbell's delivery is melodious enchantment in his own inimitable way. Then comes the great Ray Charles with this version with a hint of soul blended with country stylings and it just takes this remarkable ballad to another place, Awesome!

I love Ray Charles just as I love Johnny Cash but both their versions - whilst ok - leave me thinking "Why did you bother? You wouldn't ask Glenn Campbell to sing Ray's 'What I'd Say' or Johnny's 'Walk the Line' so why ?" The REASON you wdnt ask him to sing those tracks is because 'What I'd Say' by RC & 'Walk the Line' by JC are - commonly regarded - as definitive recordings which are not going to be beaten.. To which I would add.. 'Wichita Lineman' is NO LESS definitively Glenn Campbell's for all time.. In a thousand years no-one will top Jimmy Webb's genius song recorded by GC produced by Al de Lory in 1968..... And they won't even if they started practising it tomorrow.... It's that over & done with & slam dunked... 🤷♂️

You never listened to Dennis Brown’s version?
Without any doubt this is the best version of Wichita Lineman, interpreted by the genius of RC. Applause, also, to the arrangement and follow-up.
My personal opinion...Glen wins...his guitar solo is just unbelievable on this.
Incidentally, Glen Campbell, the man who made it a hit, played mandolin on another track from that same album.
@hhmarton95 ... i cant believe that you ask this....omg THIS IS RAY "THE GENIUS" CHARLES and we all can hear it!
@Annettesmusic oh I really couldn't tell you what instrument he uses, I'm not very musically talented see. But I'm glad you liked it, nonetheless; I had a hunch you would! and anyway, I have yet to meet a Ray Charles fan that didn't like James Taylor and vice versa. Best wishes also, Matt B
Buddy Inman on the steel guitar
yo is this on album? where this from
Listen to Dennis browns version
Even Dennis brown song this young Dennis

Another great rendition of a classic Americana composition, it's a shame you can hear cracking and popping on this:(

My fave, that one.
@hhmarton95 No this is Frank Sinatra...
is this ray charles?
@shall41 Please if you wish, do take a look at Cassandra Wilson's version. It is just exquisite! This song does not need much really whoever sings it - the lyrics are simple beauty! I love Ray Charles and had the privilege to see him singing live, but somehow I do not like this version.
Willie hutch Verion is the besttheonly version
@hhmarton95 wtf!!!!!!!
no...its Dolly Parton
He loved smack
Great version but Glens version can't be beat, james taylor done a great one too.
Nope. Glen Campbell’s version still the best.
Other than the steel guitar, the orchestration on this arrangement sucks! Sounds like an intro for a 70's TV action series. But Ray saves the day! I really wasn't sure this song would fit his style, but you put a great singer with a great song, and you get a great performance!
don't like it, but unlike the fans of this version I want to justify my choice and say that I find the song too ornated. The beauty in the original is in its simplicity and in general: I don't like Cambepll I and adore Charles.
Overrated artist
Lmao this is bad
