The first time he played this song was because he was playing for a club and ran out of material, so he improvised this entire song. The crowd was so into it he just kept playing. Amazing

Although this song itself may not be technically very complex or anything, the thought that he actually "wrote" it by ad-libbing it live on stage in front of a paying audience is just mind blowing. Not just the talent, just think of the guts it would take to do something like that. Absolutely Amazing.

And just think: He's playing this blind. Even the most trained highly practiced concert pianists look at their keyboard when they play. This guy never could. Can you imagine the hours he must have practiced to know the right position of every key? To be able by slight touch instantly know where each one is.

Concert pianists play songs significantly harder than this. These soul/blues songs have very repetitive patterns which make it easier to play. Over time, muscle memory will make it easy for him to play the songs. Impressive, nonetheless.

Perfection! Charles improvised this onstage at a club in Brownsville, Pennsylvania in December 1958 after he played every song he knew and still had 12 minutes to fill. He simply asked his band to follow his lead... which they did. He told his backing singers (The Raeletts) to simply repeat whatever he said. The singer remembered: "I had sung everything I could think of. So I said to the guys, 'Look, I'm going to start this thing off, I don't know where I'm going, so y'all just follow me.' And I said to the girls, 'Whatever I say, just repeat after me.'"

Ray Charles came to Brazil for the first time in 1963. Charles revealed that he had received an offer from 12,000 Brazilians who wanted to donate his eyes. "I was born to suffer and suffer a lot, I don't deserve this great happiness, that of being able to see", he declared this is the live performance in São Paulo, on the extinct TV Excelsior, on September 19, where he performed 2 shows.

This Song holds a very important part in Music for it was one of the first R & B Songs to cross over to the Pop Singles Chart. He performed this at The Apollo in 1959 whose opening act was The Miracles who bombed at their debut even though he helped them. He influenced so many people many of them would be superstars in their own right. Olivia Newton-John, Billy Joel, and Paul McCartney were some of his biggest fans. Even over The Years his name was mentioned in Books like Original Sins, Acts of Faith and even The Book Version of Grease.

Why does everyone always feel the need to state their age or say how crap music today is. Not all the music today is crap just like not all the music back then was great. It depends on what and whom you listen to. It also depends on your musical tastes. And being "13 and listening to old music" has nothing to do with how cool you are for listening, it just means you like music. I'd just like to go to a comment section of an older song and see people appreciating the song rather than generalizing all current songs or seeking praise for listening to a song. Good music is good music. That's all there is to it.

Autumn Cymone Sorry the sad state of the culture, music and entertainment is fact whether or not you want to believe it. Jazz, blues and soul to gangsta rap. Classic country to the pap they play now. Taylor Swift? GMAFB. You can't have a movie without some over the top special effects or a PC liberal plot line. You can't be a comedian without dropping F bombs every other word. I could go on but it won't make any difference to you. Yes good music is good music but there is precious little of it today being made today.

A great singer and a great song. Thanks for sharing. One time in the 70s he heard the County Music show Hee Haw and said he could tell they really enjoyed themselves and wanted his agent to get him on the show. Of course they wanted him and on that episode they advertised that County Music was having some soul and it went well. It is too bad it isn't available because he was great on it and everyone had fun. One of the few non Country Western singer to be on that show.

The first time I heard Ray I was 8. It was a summer weekend party and he was playing on one of those TV shows, maybe it was even this one. There were probably 40-50 people at the party. Everyone stopped what they were doing and watched and listened to the little black and white TV.

Wow!!! I'm speechless... this song is the very soul of blues music. An orchestra, some backup singers, a feverish tempo, and the leading voice of Ray singing a very basic score and you have, like, the very best song ever written!!
