She tried to pay for her items but Walmart refused, made her leave the store, and called the cops. So much for a company that claims to care about the community. Walmart is culpable here.

I'm not sure where I land on blaming Walmart. It depends. If Walmart called the police to sick the ghouls on her, yes they shoulder part of the responsibility mainly because it's against Walmart POLICY to not call the police for theft under $25. However, the story I keep reading is the Walmart employees actually called and told the police there was something mentally wrong with her. So if they called not because they were worried about the $13 but because an obviously elderly woman looked in some sort of distress, yep that is legit and you would think EVERYONE would call 911 if you saw someone like that. This comes back to again, we have no options as a society. We call 911 and you have foaming attack dogs that respond. This is why we need to reallocate police funds to have the correct response to every situation. If she is a senior citizen having an episode, 911 should have the ability to call professionals that can deal with it....not these ghouls.

Has the daughter seen the video of the cops laughing at what they did to her mother?! I sure hope her lawyer uses it to destroy those horrific, disgusting thugs!!!

Culture starts at the top and it's clear the Loveland PD has a toxic culture. He's also responsible for the hiring practices and allowing sociopaths onto the force.

We feel the pain here in the UK for this woman. All the cops involved should do jail time, from the arrest to those laughing in custody. They should all lose everything for this, perhaps then they will learn from the top down that you cannot treat people like this and think they do anything to the public with no consequences. Sue the lot of them and jail them.

The punk cop is so proud of how he threw a 73 year old lady with dementia to the ground and hobbled her because she shoplifted 13 dollars of merch from Walmart......What A Hero.

Wal-mart brought her back inside, once seeing the cash registers, she remembers that she forgot to pay, she tried to pay, they (walmart employees) said no, they took the $13.xx, and told her to leave. Her forgetting is real (from what I read seems to me that the cash registers triggered that she remembered she had to pay), because if you have aphasia: A comprehension and communication (reading, speaking, or writing) disorder resulting from damage or injury to the specific area in the brain. Can last several years or be lifelong Condition Highlight Common for ages 60 and older Here I add, it is not uncommon for people that have had strokes to suffer aphasia. Just one more reason that I still won't shop at Wal-Mart.

I am 70 and my wife is 81 she gets lost in the house. She does things and can't remember what she did. You have to be kind and patient with people like Karen Garner.

The female cop did it for me, one would think if the thug male cop couldn't show this beautiful spirit kindness and compassion she would. This was sickening to me and every time I see it I get angrier. Praying for Karen and her family.🙏🏾🙏🏾

My mom is 73, and I am crying like a toddler watching this....how can those cops be such evil pieces of sh*t?!!

I can relate also, my mom has early dementia, the last time I took her to the doctor, they told me she didn't know what year or month it was, I talked to her and explained to her what the month and day was and she got frightened, she said "I lost time." they admitted her and found she had a couple of mini strokes, which can happen at any time, and when it does they have more problems putting thoughts together, she is also 5 feet tall and weighs about 96 lbs. she drinks ensures because she will forget to eat and we are trying to keep some weight on her.

Unfortunately, the only one on the hook for the lawsuit ends up being the city i.e. the taxpayers.... Nothing happens to these cops. The police unions will get him "dismissed" with nothing noted on his file. He will just move to another city, get a new job as cop, sheriff, or constable and just keep on moving up the ladder. Eventually he will be in charge of training fresh academy graduates and the cycle will just perpetuate.

You can’t train being a good-hearted, empathetic and caring individual.

His mum and grandmother must be wondering what kind of monster they raised. Only a monster could enjoy doing this to another weak and vulnerable human being. He was so proud of his sadistic behaviour.

@trine 3 That may or may not be true! I've seen brothers and sisters that are so different from each other some kind some not. I've seen good loving parents that their kids got mixed up in the wrong crowds turned bad because of those they hung around with not because of the parents. That is the parents fault if they let them hang around mean kids but the parents can't be with them all the time at school where too much bullying can take place. My dad never cared about animals. Threw them out in the yard never showed them love. I love animals and get really upset when I hear of them being neglected and/or abused. I am nothing like my dad and was happy the day I was old enough to leave home. I know it's entirely different mistreating animals than humans although neither should be mistreated!! I am just trying to make a point it's not always the parents why children are the way they are. Some children are just nothing like their parents while others are.

Exactly, nothing to do with training. Two things that occurred to me, we are in the middle of a pandemic, she was elderly, why arrest her, even if she did not have dementia? Did they fear for their lives that they even had to resort to handcuffs behind her back? No way I can wrap my mind about how this was funny to them

Trauma, physical and/or mental, usually worsens dementia and Alzheimer’s. A friend’s parent was in the first stages of Alzheimer’s, he lost his wife and daughter to cancer in 1 year. Afterwards he deteriorated so badly that he died within a few months.

My heart goes out to that poor woman. She must have been terrified. This is disgusting! DISGUSTING! and not just the police either. The care and help that there is for senior is APPALLING!

The man laughed and had no remorse after. He was using it to flirt with the female cop and brag laughing how tough he felt

They were so rough with her, breaking her arm & other serious injuries but the video of them laughing about her is inconceivable! I hope Elder Abuse will be among the charges. There is NO way that this level of callousness wasn't evident from these officers before now. The 3 that were cracking up while watching the body cam video of her take down and laughing at the "pop" when her arm broke - - - these 3 NEVER should have been in law enforcement. They don't have the temperament.

As a daughter of a father with CTE, I felt this... deep in my bones, I felt this.

Both of my Grandma's had dementia. I can't even imagine them suffering through such abuse. And at the hands of Police whose salaries we pay. Absolutely unacceptable.

Dementia is a cruel disease that causes great suffering. For family & friends the feeling of powerlessness is overwhelming. This family has been violated 😔

My heart breaks for this family. All I know is if this was my mother or grandmother I would be In jail cause I would find them and make them pay.

My grandfather suffers from memory problems too. I can understand that the fear and distress for your family are bottomless. This daughter’s emotions are so genuine and raw, it would affect anyone with basic empathy.

My heart goes out to Karen's family. This could have been my mom. My mom used to run away, Get very confused. She would carry a purse with money in credit cards but still would take things from the store. I hope the actions of Karen's daughter will help to reform and inform the police and how to approach and talk to everyone.

I hope this poor woman sues EVERYONE from Walmart to the AG office for EVERYTHING they have!! Sickening things happening to innocent people MUST STOP! Make examples of them all!!

Now you see the impact of the lack of accountability of police officers. This is not only a black lives matter issue. It’s a human being issue. Just like in Germany.

I hope Karen’s family knows we the people stand next to her on this, just watching the video has brought us anger and wanting justice as it could’ve been any of our mothers or grandmothers.

It scars me to think what I would want to do if someone attacked my elderly mother, hurt her as badly as these officers did, and they made matters even worse by locking her in a cage for 6 hours with no medical attention. I would be seeing red!

This woman alone making me cry. I can literally feel her heartbreak 😭

No words, brings tears to my eyes. Horrifying what we are seeing in this World by tyrannical Government. Disgraceful frightening. Poor family, Poor Miss Garner.

It seems no one is safe.

Another officer from this department raped a drunk lady in custody, so when the chief said this is not who we are he was right they were much worse.

I’m so sorry that this brutality happened to your mother and to all of you, her loving family.

Both police officers should be fired immediately. Lose their pensions and spend some time behind bars where hopefully other criminals will do on to them as they have done on to this poor, innocent elderly woman.

So , I am so Angry with how they have treated her Mom. My Mother also had Dementia. Now, maybe others can have some empathy for what Black people go through.

No arrest for inflicting bodily injury on a confused senior citizen? America is gone.

My mom had dementia and I feel this daughter's pain. A simple conversation could have made all the difference. Prayers and support to this family.

This situation is unforgivable when it didn't have to be like this. My Grandmother had dementia. We didn't know how bad it was until the day we couldn't find her, she had wandered off. It wasn't five minutes before a police cruiser pulled up to the house with our Grandmother.They had noticed her walking on the side of the road and could tell something wasn't right, they stopped and talked to her and knew immediately it was dementia. She had her purse with her and they were able to identify her right away. I will never forget how kind and gentle those officers were to her.

That is how it should be! Especially with older folks. Even people in their 50s get Alzheimer's and dementia. It was very obvious when he walked up to her she had issues.

I once had to make an emergency call for my mother who gets vertigo spells. She was very disoriented nauseated and dizzy, but when the EMTs came you can tell they weren't compassionate or have any passion for their jobs. The way they spoke to her was demeaning. They told her not to drink or eat and she started to drink water because she said she was so dizzy and thirsty but immediately after she drank and threw up, one of the guys said I told you not to drink. and to another EMT he said she drank water and threw up. It is this type of insensitivity that is in people like the PIGS who assaulted Karen Garner. The Chief of Police needs to take responsibility for this as well and they need to be held accountable

I live in the UK: I only came across this case yesterday and it made me feel physically sick. Seeing the footage of their mother, sitting there, confused, with her shoulder dislocated and arm broken, still in cuffs, quietly saying "I hurt my shoulder" made my stomach lurch. I'm glad at least the psychopath who did this is spending prison time for this, but that entire PD needs to be investigated and shut down.

I am so, so very sorry. This is absolutely outrageous! All officers involved need fired, jailed and sued!

The very thought of someone even thinking about hurting my mother is enough to enrage me. My heart goes out to Karen and her children who have to deal with this horrible trauma.

As a black person, I can tell you this happens all the time but…nobody cares when it happens to us. How ironic that it happened to someone named Karen.

My mom had dementia. Trauma can aggravate and accelerate its progression. The whole family was damaged by those cops' sadistic crimes.

For a Indian American to stop his car and ask police why they were brutally throwing a young person around?? Is huge deal. The courage of that man means alot. He could have honestly destroyed his own life but he stepped up!

Colorado Criminal Statutes: Assault, Second Degree Felony, Class 4: Incarceration of four to 12 years, with fines of $2,000 to $500,000. plus the at-risk persons statute. there, lakelade colorado district attorney. get busy.

In a perfect world the officer could have told her he just wanted to help her and ask her what the date was or day of the week, simple questions that can establish if someone has dementia, this is a sad example of our society.

@@gerryward6931 I'm normally pessimistic about this type of thing, but so much damage was done to this woman (sprained wrist, broken arm, dislocated shoulder, mental trauma) and I FEEL the public backlash this time, the genuine disgust when she begs to go home.. I'm cautiously optimistic. I was very upset when something similar happened to elderly librarian Stephanie Bottom, but I could tell it would get swept away. She wasn't as frail so she had fewer injuries of a torn rotator cuff, plus she had her mental faculties, but they HUMILIATED her the same way and joked and mocked her about "pulling her out of the car by her weave". This was 2018, but coincidentally her lawsuit against them was JUST FILED last week.

I am a Geratrics and Palliative Care Nurse and I have NEVER seen anything like this. A child could tell there was a problem with this lady, a moron could tell. It sounded like they were mocking and Intimidating her. The police who were involved should be fired and the department should be sued. This has set her back so much, it will be hard for her to recover, if she ever does. DISGRACEFUL & SHAMEFUL Now, that is elder abuse.

As a caretaker of 5 yrs before my mother passed from dementia, alzheimer, in 2019 I understand some of your feelings dealing with this dreaded disease and then this happens. You are in my Prayers. Stay strong.

As I scrolled down, I was thinking the exact same thing, and then I read your comment. There are people fighting this crimimal injustice. How do we get word to the right person? I mean someone with legal power and a heart? This is cruel and heartbreaking and sinister, as well.

If they are this rough with an elder with dementia, can you imagine how they treat people with hearing disability, autism.

That's no way to handle a senior citizen....... NO WAY !! That police force needs a housecleaning !! Family members need to put an ID bracelet (identifying their ailment/s)on their senior citizen loved ones wrist.

My heart goes out to this family, I am blown away at the police abuse on this poor lady. Absolutely horrifying the poor mother. Loosing their mother to a terrible disease is so hard and then to see her abused by police and left to suffer in pain is unimaginable just beyond deplorable
