Ravi Shankar (Clinic) - Benaras Ghat
This is an excerpt from the DVD "Ravi Shankar in Portrait" . In this clip, he is giving lessons to his deciples while composing the tune "Benares Ghat". He doesn't need to write down the music or record any demos, it stays all in his head. The end result is an amazing tune. (And, Oh yes, he speaks fluent Bangla :)

This is the way how music has been in India, nothing formal or written. Things are written in heart and executed by brain - it's like river flowing and it's only possible when our hearts and brains in sync.
I have never seen how a star was born in a galaxy but after watching this video I can say that I have seen how a STAR creates heavenly atmosphere through music on planet earth.
Pandit Ji was way ahead of his time of music composing era of that time... He is eternal, like Ustad Bismillah Khan Saheb ji and Abba ji.
Wonderful 👏👏👏 Just beyond words 👍👍👍 Myself being a sitarist felt that I should have had got the opportunity to play under the direction of Pandit ji.... Like how I got to see, play and received the blessings from Maa Annapoorna Devi ji ; at her place in the year 1990. 😔🙏🎶🕉️🎵
The laugh at the end is more than the music
Ravi Shankarji was a very good composer. I still remember the great music he did for the Pather Panchali trilogy of Satyajit Ray. What he is doing here is far removed from traditional sitar playing or teaching. His pupils, including his lovely daughter are hard put to try and follow his train of thought which develops and changes from moment to moment until they have arrived at some sort of a consensus. In traditional sitar playing or practice you follow the rules laid down by the raga you have chosen, and take up a bandish, and (if you are the teacher), lay out phrases, chhunds or tan tukras to be followed by the pupils, being mindful at the same time of the right hand mizrab bols and the finger of the left hand executing the swaras needed correctly. This here is all about extempore music, with a mixture of raga/ragini composition leading wherever his fancy takes him. But look at the laughter at the end of it all. Music for him was all about creativity and enjoyment. He was a great human being. What a lovely father and what a lovely daughter! Ravi Shankar enriched Indian music by taking it to the world stage. He was a very helpful man and greatly helped many other Indian musicians find a wider stage and audience. He also taught organizers how concerts had to be organized both in India and abroad. He had a stage presence hardly equalled or excelled by anyone else except Vilayat Khan. Some of his best stage music was deeply contemplative, creating an atmosphere with his alaaps. He will be fondly remembered for a long time to come.

Agreed with everything except for the notion that his music was "deeply contemplative". Buddhaditya Mukherjee's music is unquestionably deep. Vilayat khan & Bismillah music has a transcendental quality that can put you in a place of bliss. Ravi Shankar's music was more populist, in the classical realm. Of course, the impact he had on music is enormous, particularly in redefining the presentation of the Indian performance. But I am yet to hear a recording of his that I would define as deep.

@@TejasM14 Hi Tejas, I am a fan of music but am not trained in it. With that caveat, I have to strongly disagree with you. To me the greatness of Ravi Shankar's music was in his alap and jod, in the dhrupad ang as done by all Maihar musicians. Only AAK and NB on good days can surpass Raviji in alap and Raviji does better on many occasions. The alap has a continuity and striking sense of form and proportion, even to an untrained ear the raga sounds "pure". Take Puriya, a forte of the Imdad Khan gharana. UVK has some fantastic Puriya performances. Hear Raviji's Puriya Dhanashi and Puriya Kalyan from the 1950s on youtube. Please post your feedback. Hear his Marwa, despite not playing ulta jhala and ultra fast taans, Raviji's Marwa brings out the essence of the raga. He does so even in his 3min recording of Marwa. His gats are usually nice and neat, the jarring taans as he aged left something to be desired. UVK took taankari to unachievable heights in instrumental music. On their best days, AAK was in my opinion unmatched. I was blown away by his 1960s basant mukhari and that got me hooked to ICM. So I don't regard Raviji's music as light or populist, in the truest sense he was a torchbearer of the beenkar gharana.

For those who does not know the language in which he is talking is BENGALI, originated from SANSKRIT which is the Vedic language transformed as the elite class language.. You know it is too complexed !! So PUNDIT RAVI SHANKAR (actually Ravi Shankar Chowdhury) belongs to a Bengali Brahmin family who were then living in Benaras and his father was the PUROHIT of the temple in Benaras... The rest of the family members today still are continuing the legacy of Ravi Shankar and Uday Shankar.... Shows hope....
Amazing... love it!
How this man was composing such a beautiful composition?!
