Ravenglass Village Tour

Join me for a walk around the beautiful Cumbrian coastal village of Ravenglass. The only costal village in the Lake District. We will have a look along the quirky Main Street which ends on the beach. We will take a quick look at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (for more on this see the link below). We will also look at the remains of Roman Ravenglass with a walk to the Roman Bath House and location of the former Roman Fort.

Good video. The name Itunocelum is a bit of an odd one, because Ituna was the Roman name for the River Eden, (the linguistic connection is obvious) which is in north Cumbria, flows through Carlisle and discharges into the Solway Firth.

Here’s an interesting thing…I used to go here an awful lot because my father ran camping trips here for the school he was the headmaster of. Anyway, opposite the Roman bath house (across the track) I distinctly remember finding a Roman mosaic covered in undergrowth. This was 1977. I went back around 2005/6 but couldn’t find it. I don’t think I imagined it…aged 7 it didn’t seem like a big deal🤣. And boring compared to the railway…

Thanks Sue. 😀👍🏻 Yes the remains of the bath house are out of the way a bit and not particularly well publicised. You have to go looking for them.

I would say so. There’s a number of interesting things in the area. As well as the village itself, there is the ravenglass & eskdale railway and nearby Muncaster castle. 😀👍🏻

Both the Castle and the railway are worth a day to themselves,The Railway has some lovely walks at the other end and a very scenic run, The Castle has an amazing Owl and Hawk display and the tour round the Castle is great.
