Raven from FusionTLC First Look & Mini Review - DSLR / Mirrorless Strobe/Flash Universal Trigger

The Raven universal lighting and camera trigger is a new product from FusionTLC. It allows you to adjust the power of your lights, right from the top of your camera. I have been beta testing this for over a month, and wanted to crate a First Look or "mini review" of the Raven, primarily in relation to how this tool could be used with either an Einstein or LINK flash unit from Paul C. Buff when using a PocketWizard Power MC2 or FlexTT5 for Nikon cameras.
What makes the Raven unique is that it is compatible with most Profoto, Godox, and PocketWizard products, and even allows you to fire strobes from two different brands simultaneously. This "mini review" doesn't go into detail of all of the features of the Raven such as SyncView, Wakeup Mode, Time-lapse mode, MultiPop, and others, but it does cover the basics for remotely triggering strobes and flash units from other brands, even with the latest mirrorless cameras from Nikon such as the Nikon Z6ii and Z7ii. This trigger is currently only available for Nikon, but a Canon version will be available in Summer of 2021, along with a Sony version to follow.

I bought one a little while ago to work on my R5 with my PW Flex TT5s and 430EXII strobes. I love the idea that I can mix and match with other vendors such as Godox and use HSS or TTL across multiple brands. I have found the User Interface interesting, maybe a little clunky at times (Wifi set-up), but for the most part, it works. Fusion has some guides on their website, but I'd love to see some more comprehensive manuals or practical how-to's to solve particular use-case situations.

What a fantastic trigger device and more! Great review. I can only hope Sony is included soon via a firmware upgrade or another model since they have a unique hotshot device. I have switched to the Sony flashes so I can make changes in the camera’s menu. However, these features are really state of the art and have changed the way we can use flash with multiple options and brands.

I think it's fantastic that you are included as a beta tester with that gear. I use Nikon for everything still-image-related. My pocket wizards have been somewhat unpredictable lately. This just may be the answer to my issues. If it is going to lock in on my triggers frequencies then it will certainly be worth it. High-Speed Sync is also important to me with insect photography. It's going to be replacing my AC3 and MiniTT1. The channel interference indicator will be worth its weight in gold if it stops that annoying misfire situation. With an entire wedding party in front of me, I can't be diddling with the flash controllers. So happy to use your affiliate link and I absolutely wish you all the best!!!! Thumbs UP. I use the FlexTT5 units for my speedlights (SB910 & SB5000), So the Flex TT5 has only C1, C2, or Off.. so how do the raven channels work?

Thanks so much for your kind words, Frederick! The channel interference bars are FANTASTIC and a hidden gem of a feature. For the FlexTT5 you have the choice of Channel 1 or Change 2, and then Zone A, B, or C. (there's no Zone D option on the FlexTT5 when using as a receiver). And you need the upgraded e-release software for it for it to work with the Raven. Hope this info helps. Much appreciated and thanks for watching!

Very nice thanks. Its worth mentioning this is also compatible with native PCB cybersync receivers (besides PW MC2 on Einstein). It looks like this will work with even the older battery / ac powered type that are used on Alien Bee and White Lightning units. I'm curious Mike if you've ever mixed different brands of lighting or just stuck with PCB Einstein/Digibee (prior to link).

Ok, great review on the Raven trigger. It looks like all the Godox, Pocket Wizard, and other triggers are obsolete now. This unit does what all others do plus way more. Seems like the best trigger especially if starting the off camera flash shooting or if multiple brands of camera and flash are involved. Thanks for posting.

Hi John, since recording this video, the Raven can also now natively fire Paul C. Buff strobes (CyberSync) as well. So you can choose Profoto, Godox, PocketWizard, *and* Buff strobes. It currently doesn't natively work with the LINK (I've tried it) but that's likely a firmware update down the road. Works great with DigiBees with the CyberSync™ Transceivers inserted into the device, which is a big deal for me since DigiBees can't use PocketWizard MC2s like the Einsteins can. The Raven is a great trigger.

Hi Mike, do you know if the Raven has been updated so it can do HSS with the Link without using the TT5 adapter? Thanks

I forgot to ask you can just trigger the link like the digibee with that trigger? It happens that I also own the PW tt5 That one will be only if you need hot sync with Link correct?

The PW AC3 was only able to control the Einstein from full power down 1/64 power. Does the Raven allow full control down to 1/256 power?

You could if you have PocketWizards connected to your Westcott units. The Raven would be natively controlling the Profoto, but it's not natively compatible with Westcott yet.

I understand Sekonic RT-32CTP Radio Transmitter Module work only with Pocketwizrd. Will RT32CTL will work with New Radio Trigger By Fusion TLC by Raven ? As Mentioned Fusion TLC by Raven is designed to work with Profotto and GODOX flashes. Do I need separate Transreceiver for my GODOX AD600 Pro if I use Fusion TCL? Or Else It directly Trigger GODOX AD 600 Pro without help of receiver.

  • @MikeMcGeePhotography

The RT32CTL inside a Sektonic is a trigger. So it will fire to other PocketWizard receivers and fire them. The Raven can then also fire to these PocketWizard receivers since it too is a trigger. They're both triggers/transmitters. Hope this info helps.

Thanks for the information. I am still a little confused on compatibility. I believe that the Raven only works with pockewizards that have been upgraded to the E release. Is that true? I have a ton of Einstein lights with the MC2 receiver that I trigger with a Plus III. If it only works with the E release, then I will have to upgrade them all for $10 each. So not terrible, but now the trigger in the sekonic light meter won't trigger my flash for metering. Sekonic says they will not be developing a firmware release to use the E frequencies. Any thoughts?

Hi John, at the time of my video, the Raven worked with pocket wizards with the updated e-release software. However, since this video, there's been a firmware update to the Raven that allows it to also work natively with Buff Cybersync receivers! It's pretty awesome. I too used to use MC2s, and now I just use native Paul C Buff cybersync receivers for Einsteins and Digibees. Works great. If you'd like your sekonic to work with the Raven, the only way would be to get an external transmitter connected via a sync cord to fire the strobes and velcro it onto the back. This is what I did. Hope this info helps.

Yup! At the time I made this initial video, you couldn't. But after a firmware update the Raven also fires to Paul C Buff CyberSync frequencies natively. I use the Raven to fire natively with buff Einsteins and DigiBees via the CyberSync receivers. It's pretty awesome!

Hey Mike, ive been using pocketwizard since 2004, and paul buff since 1999. im currently using the Pw plus iiie, and im having horrible reliability issues. got the E firmware update. even my sekonic isnt triggering the flash sometimes. have you ever had that problem? i noticed in the video at 6:40 you showed the raven can show you which channels have most interference. i wonder if this could be the solution. i never had problems until i got these newest devices and firmware. i thought it would be the most reliable
