Rav Kook’s Universalistic Mysticism and Mystical Atheism | Bezalel Naor

Rav Kook was a polymath, a legalist and rationalist, a mystic and poet. He was a world leader of Jewry and one of her most influential thinkers of the past century. His legacy as both a nationalist and universalist continues to baffle his admirers and detractors.
Joining us to help sort out this enigmatic spiritual giant and his messianic vision is Rabbi Bezalel Naor, an author and teacher, a preeminent scholar, translator and lifelong student of Rav Kook, and founder of Orot inc, a research centre and publishing house dedicated to the elucidation and dissemination of the teachings and poetry of Rav Kook.
In this conversation we discuss, Bezalel’s journey to becoming a student of Rav Kook, and take a glimpse into Rav Kook’s Spiritual Renaissance, his universal love, and his peculiar mystical atheism.
“All religions will recognize each other as brothers; how each serves its purpose... The relationships between religions will be organic. This realization will automatically bring about (and is brought about by) the higher realization of the unity of the light of Ein Sof [the Infinite, God], that manifests in and through all. And with this, automatically the pride of Israel must be uplifted.”

The description of being a mystically searching teenager trying to build a cosmos-view with limited, pre-internet, but somehow an almost perfect hanful of limited books and ideas is something I could relate to so strongly I feel like weeping. You were not alone, I was not alone, sonehow none of us were ever alone, but the feelings of intense aloneness punctuated by treasured moments of deep insight….perfectly said!! 90th to like and thank you so much for the conversation. Reverential humility and silence instead of naming an experience 'G-d' seem like the best answer to how to find mystical atheism. Thank you for showing us a glimpse of what can't be said. and i love the idea that we're always listening to the wrong G-d as long as we breathe. The world's hope is that religious people take personal responsibility for how they interpret their scriptures, duties, doctrines and creeds and it is my hope that mystical atheism is the best way to do so. Much love!

A flower opened her petals to brave the wind. The gardener bent down embracing her stem between thumb and forefinger. "This too, these petals crown the glory that has no name. And blessed is that name." And a dew drop alighted on the gardener's calloused fingers. And I heard the flower speak, "here, a tear of joy." עטרת אחד של אור זהב

What I learnt from this episode and this pious man is that we are all crying out for unity hence one movement to another, and all our saviours which many differnt cultures spreading from east to west beleive in, all our saviours will come with justice and peace, now we are at folly when we start fighting over their names when we all agree their duty to be the same so why not work towards their duties, and in this way the perennial message which we all hold to be THE TRUTH individualy can be understood as PART of THE TRUTH which we all interpretate differntly and so beutifuly....nature is very important which he started with in the beginning with the mention of woods and emerson because emerson said in the forest we all return to reason and faith and it is so profound this statement that nature teaches us unity without bias sun shines on everyone(except us british lol) rain falls for all and so forth so yes hail unity in the name of peace!

Another mind-blowing convo! I learned so much. Not only do differences and multiplicities definitely exist in this world of "lower unity" , but they themselves are the very way through which we are to seek ultimate (upper) unity. Maybe G-D can only be revealed in this world davka through searching within paradoxes and the appearance of duality and contradiction. It seems that somehow unity is hiding within all this multiplicity. The world is so full of apparent contradictions and paradoxes: good vs evil peace vs conflict soul vs body intellect vs emotion self vs other conflicting views within a single individual etc etc... It cannot be that unity exists independently of all this multiplicity, for then it is not really unity. Perhaps we should recognise that multiplicity is an opportunity to search for the unity within it. Unity and truth must also include the possibility of falsehood and duality. Any dogma that rejects the legitimate existence of multiplicity cannot be the way to truth. I remember seeing another quote from Rav Kook saying that " reality is not afraid of contradictions" On the other hand, those who seek a shortcut to the upper unity can find it through their appropriate tzemach😜😉

@@SeekersofUnity Good on ya mate. I notice that you often tell your guests that initially you were impressed by how much the world's mystical traditions have in common but now you find it more interesting to explore their differences. As I mentioned above, unity is to be found through and within multiplicity. Rabbi Sacks a"h called it "The Dignity of Difference" I reckon that listening to your show makes one more tolerant, understanding and respectful which G-D willing will lead to brotherhood and unity.

The transition from the Lower Unity/Yesh to the Higher Unity/Ayin in which the last qliphoth are being removed makes me think of Meister Eckhart's mystical ideas of breaking through the Godhead in order to enter the Abyss, which is beyond our theistic conceptions of God and beyond being as is being put here. Is there some connection here between these two schools of thought possibly?

I have a long history with Jung read him decades ago then went into analysis with a Jungian. The response, from the deepest level when intending to follow a Jungian path was quite simply, no. Since then it has been a slow passage back to my Jewish roots. I'm rereading Memories, dreams and reflections at the moment, interesting after all the years.

51:16 "Anybody who comes out of the the Kabbalistic tradition is going to view existence as _a form_ of corporealization of God." I don't believe he was saying that existence implies corporality, but rather that it is "a form of corporealization", or more precisely, a form of _hagshama,_ insofar as it constricts and limits God to the containers of our own finite conceptions, akin to what happens what we corporealize or anthropomorphize God. Also, _"Hagshamat Elokut"_ has its own meanings and host of connotations and implications in it's Kabbalistic and philosophical context, which i think you're aware of and don't need to elaborate, which unfortunately do not accompany the term as it's translated into English as "Corporealization of God", as with all translations, and particularly translations of philosophical/theosophical terms.
