    The heat protection bellow the smoker is a great selling point. All of my poly Nuc roofs have burn marks from my smoker.

    Great video, entertaining as always, looks decent smoker by modern standards. I've had just about every smoker out there and they are all poorly made imo. This is no exception, might have some cool features, but it'll fall apart in no time. Hinge, welts, and bolts will go (the plywood and metal are too thin, no washers used inside either). You can make them last longer by heating the lid edges before opening, never hold the bellows or use force to lever the lids open or closed. The internal box, ime, gets clogged and stuff gets behind it, then you can't get it out. But I'm lazy and never clean them. I'd pay more for something more solid with better connections to the bellows, but they just don't make them anymore. Best one I have is copper with a welded bottom grate, although stuff falls through it never clogs. But like all the others it's weak hinge and bellow connections gave up, managed to repair but it's days are numbered.

    Definitely agree. That connection from firebox to bellows is where every single smoker I have owned has failed. There must be a better way than tack welding them together?

    @@BlackMountainHoney could maybe strengthen with a bit of brazing, definitely on the copper ones. They all connect with thin metal too, which can bend slightly out of shape, meaning bellow hole doesn't line up perfectly. Also had the ply and fabric separate on some. Suede gets attacked and wet. All just poor designs in cheap material 😟. I've melted/ironed the odd poly roof too, due to short cages, until I saw a picture where someone put it down on the bellows face! Genius.

    Hi Lawrence. I missed your comments regarding the suede bellows cover. Last season, I promised to go through my friends hives while he was at work. He has one hive of horrible aggressive bees, I'd have split the colony and re- Queens the buggers. My friend has the really outdated view that aggressive bees are also super productive! Because every inspection meant I sustained 10+ stings through my latex gloves, I resorted to using a pair of kid skin TIG welding gloves. The white kid skin is really fine and still gives excellent touch. The palm of the gloves have a black suede reinforced areas. The bees hated these stripes, up to a 100 bees committed suicide trying to sting through these strips! Such a sad thing. I've never used them again. Also, I find black latex gloves also provoke more stings, (a subjective impression.) The same hive hated navy blue canvas deck shoes and black wool socks!

    They definitely dont like black! I bought a set of black nitriles and they hammered them every inspection. We will see how we get on with black suede bellows but I suspect they wont like it.

    Swap for plastic bellows. I've a set of plastic replcement bellows on my smoker and I love em. Weather proof, bright yellow and they scrub clean! I'll stick some on the repaired smoker when I return it. Maybe another topic for a video for you. Best. Stuart

    I've started to find that the bees, when they get angsty, have started to attack the bellows on my Rauchboy - like 15-20 stings - anybody have a solution?

  • @petejesper

    Another excellent review, I look forwards to the Dadent comparison video. The key feature I look for is a really solid hinge and I’m not 100% sure if the Rauchboy quite hits the mark. I still have a stainless smoker I bought from Thorne’s over 40 years ago and it’s still in great serviceable condition! I have been thinking about replacing it with a slightly larger smoker but have yet to see one worth the upgrade. The only downside some may have with the Rauchboy is that some light their smoker by heating the outset body with a blow torch but due to the double wall of the fire chamber I don’t think that method of lighting will work.

  • @BlackMountainHoney

    @BlackMountainHoney

    Agreed..The hinge is definitely its weakest point but still pretty solid. The dadant hinge is far superior. Ive never seen anyone light a smoker light that! Interesting :)
