Suarez's handball is Elite tier for me. The fact that he knew that the advantage gained was bigger than the punishment was genius. He made the only play he could make to keep Uruguay in that game and it worked. To do it to prevent the only African team left in it from reaching the semis at the first ever world cup in Africa makes it truly elite.

Nah, its legit a handball to go to the next round. Dont have to deep it that much. Legit, if Ghana had scored their penalty, they would have advanced, and Suarez would have looked like a right idiot, but they missed. Anyone would have done that especially at a knockout stage.

On January 27, 1994, the national football teams of Barbados and Grenada played against each other as part of the qualification round for the 1994 Caribbean Cup. Due to an unusual scoring rule and the two teams' respective positions in the tournament, it became alternately in the best interest of each team to score an own goal. The result has been described as "one of the strangest matches ever".[1][2] The organisers of the tournament had imposed a rule requiring all matches to have a winner, and this was enforced with an unusual variant of the golden goal rule: the first goal scored in extra-time not only won the match, but was also worth two goals, emphasising the "golden" part of the rule. Barbados started the match needing to win by a margin of at least two goals to qualify for the final tournament, and after Grenada scored late in normal time to bring the scoreline to 2-1, Barbados deliberately scored an own goal to force extra-time, where they could get the two-goal winning margin they needed courtesy of the unconventional golden goal rule.[1] This resulted in an unusual situation: for the last three minutes of the match, Grenada was trying to score in both goals, as either outcome (3-2 on points, or 2-3 via goal difference) would have advanced them to the finals, while Barbados had to defend both goals. Ultimately, Barbados was able to prevent Grenada from scoring, thus forcing extra-time, and scored the golden goal to win the match. I did know about this result but I chose to copy-paste from wikipedia bc I am lazy smh
@BlackPawn14
8 ай бұрын
More precisely, the tournament had a rule where Group Stage games would go into extra time, and Golden Goals counted double. Barbados needed to win by 2 goals to qualify, and were only ahead by 1 late into the game, when they realized that, instead of trying to score a goal in 5 minutes, they could score an own goal, then have 30 minutes to score a Golden Goal. So they scored an own goal. Grenada then realized that, if they scored in _either_ goal, they would qualify (goal = win outright, own goal = lose by 1 goal = qualify on goal diff). The result was Grenada trying to score in both goals, while Barbados defended both their own goal and their opponent's. The funniest part is that, _it worked._ Barbados held on until full time, then scored a Golden Goal in extra time to qualify.

@korganrocks3995
Жыл бұрын
I'm with Chris on that one; a lot of players would have done the same instinctively. Stopping a ball from crossing the line with your hand should be an automatic goal(plus whatever additional punishment you think is appropriate), but until that's actually the case it's perfectly understandable that players are willing to take a red card for the good of the team.
@julianodriozola

the punishment for that is very clear. Red card and a penalty, and he got what he deserved. I dont think its bad at all to be fair. Almost all the others got away with it

Not really. He got punished, the Ghana players would've done the same the other way round. Gyan missed the penalty, and tbf the header should've been buried too without Suarez having a chance of saving it

I was hoping you might include the Sheffield United game where they tried to get the result nullified by getting the game abandoned through lack of players. Sending subs on just to get a red card instantly. As it was a loophole in the rules, and as a blades fan myself, there is clearly nothing wrong with it, and a monumental day in our history.

Suarez’s handball is “nothing wrong”. He handballed, nobody got hurt(like broken legs or bitten shoulders), he was sent off, got disqualified, gave up a penalty. It was total Ghanas problems not to take advantage of that.
The streets wount forget florent malouda but the will forget that Gallas scored the goal.
i feel like the suarez ghana goal clearance was honestly smart cause it was gonna go on guaranteed without him, but a penalty isnt guaranteed to go in

loving the trim ollie you cheeky boy
I gotta check if Joel Veltman's stinker is in a follow-up episode (where a teammate is down, he waves at the opposition to get them distracted, then speeds away with the ball) but it certainly should! Same with that other Dutch league classic, when the keeper throws a ball into the field before his opponent has a chance to go for a throw in, to prevent it from happening.

the "dig a hole" on the penalty spot happened also here in Italy in 2001 during the derby between Juventus and Torino. In that occasion the hole have been made on the precise spot and Marcelo Salas kicked the ball right to the fans xD It was a crucial penalty because the game was tie on 3 - 3 and could ended up with a Juventus win if the penalty ended up with a goal

Suarez handball against Ghana has to be the worst incident of cheating i have ever seen in football. Ghana play an absolute blinder against a strong Uruguay team. Then in the 120th min Suarez decides he's a goalkeeper when Ghana have basically scored. Then Ghana miss the penalty, lose the shootout and Uruguay go through.
