- In this episode I am designing three separate parts of the Marble Machine X , the Ratchet Marble Lifting System, The Treadle Pedal and the Demagnetization Marble Route. Working very hard in CAD to push the project on and to get the designs ready for manufacturing, still some weeks of designing to do but the better i design in CAD the better everything will come together in the end. Or so i hope at least :) All the very best from sunny France (or so i think at least by looking out from my desktop window. It looks very sunny out there)
Enjoy! Martin

    have you considered a disconnect for the pedal for when its not needed? I can see someone (you) cranking away at the drivewheel like crazy and accidentally slipping a foot under the pedal, forcing the machine to a halt/crushing your foot/jarring the machine...

    Konetsu hmm, we have a clutch between the flywheel and crank, but i had actually missed the danger of the foot being crushed underneath... AAAA why does it have to be so hard always!!! Thanks for pointing it out, the MMX have several spots where it would just act as a meatgrinder if you stick body parts into it,now i am aware of yet another one... OH wait! i can make the pedal flex upwards but not downwards, this way any foot underneath will be safe, thanks for your comment led to this simple solution! When you see that flexing pedal on tge world tour you will know you helped saving my foot. //M

    Nice and simple fix, add some spring tension downwards so it doesn't flap around without load and you're good to go, now you're just risking a nasty shinner ;P But there's a solution for that too, shinguards! (fast forward a few years, the MMX has been renamed the MGX and comes with a full protective suit for the user, after horribly mutilating the 3 previous operators... Because the show must go on!) Jokes aside. there's always a balance with what level of safety concessions to make... Another solution might be a twin lever action on the pedal arm, moving it out of reach whilst it's not used without disengaging it. edit: I'm thinking something in line of a parallelogram operation, moving it up and back.

    It's never easy, but I think that's the point, why it's so exciting. If it will be easy, you probably won't have 915k viewers! Design = encountering problems like this :) compromises between visual side, performance, production, ergonomic, safety and so on! Sometimes, little step backward to make a big step forward and and vice versa. It is very helpful, that you have audience like Konzetsu.

    Did you consider the solution used in old style sewing machines? They used a centre pivoted treadle - this way you can support your own weight while treadling without all of the unsupported leg flailing.

  • @newtonbricoman1694

    @newtonbricoman1694

    I agree with that . Martin ,the way that the pedal is built is not ergonomic , you will be unbalanced and will not be able to support the action for a long time without stressing the left leg. You will be tired from the movement rapidly. , unless being sit. I am following you from your fist machine , keep going . Martin!

    jossesphere On a sewing machine yes you're right but I think it would be okay. Another thing is I was wrong to say the treadle foot plate was centre pivoted, I misremembered that the pivot point is more like 25% from front of the foot plate. That way the players foot is better positioned to move the treadle with their ankle above the rocking point and at the same time support a good ammount of the weight of the player.

    Make sure that your foot won't hurt during playing the machine. Due to wheel's inertia movement, you can crash your foot if you accidentally put it between pedal and floor! I know this effect from old sewing machine of my grandma

    Ditocoaf, he might have to, but he might not want that to be the case... If nothing else, he could add a bicycle pedal, but that would make it difficult to play the instrument... Might be able to do it if he could power it with his weight? Like a stair-stepper exercise machine; he would step up and his weight would transfer into mechanical energy for the machine. He would constantly need to be "climbing stairs" but it would allow both of his hands to be free and he wouldn't need to brace against anything.

    You could improve that treadle pedal a lot by just looking at an old sewing machiene or the kicker on a base drum. The whole pedal should not be flying up and down like you made it now.

    Very interesting to see how you think out your designs. I totally get how you require a mechanical system to have a nice appearance and a interesting movement as well as be very functional.

    The 30-second episode is the edit where he used the whole thing at 20x speed instead of just one of the treadle tests.

    Watching the most recent update and then working on catching up is so funny, because I get the opportunity to see the changes you're going to make before you finish your CAD stuff. It's p cool xD

    I use a treadle lathe every day for my work. It is really important to have the placement of the foot pedal under your center of gravity. Having the pedal in a comfortable location will reduce fatigued while standing on one foot for an extended period of time. You may want to consider having the foot pedal arm hing at the same point as your knee then use a pitman arm to attach to a crank. This will help you stand more comfortably and give you options later to adjust for speed and toque simply be changing the length of the crank arm. It looks like you have much more rotating mass and gear friction then on your first machine, if that's correct it's going to take more toque to keep it going.
