The first Ratchet & Clank game is weirdly one of the most atmospheric game I've ever played. It's a mix of the soundtrack, the level design, the fact that there's no strafing makes you approach situations way more carefully, the details in the skyboxes, how the HUD feels integrated into the world. It's a weirdly immersive game.

Well, I mean sure the first few times were justified. The other times not so much. I mean Clank made an honest mistake in that situation. He was just born with instructions to find Captain Qwark, he literally couldn't have known at that point.

To be fair, Ratchet being a hero instead of a jerk to Clank in later games at least makes sense since at the end of the first game they put their differences aside and became best friends. It wouldn't make sense if he was still mean to him in later games (plus, I think people would drop off the series hard if he was still that insufferable--even Insomniac thought this, which is why Ratchet switched VAs in the second game). I do think you kind of undersell Ratchet and Clank's relationship in the sequels since (in the PS2 games after the first one at least) Ratchet and Clank still have decent chemistry

I agree with all of this, but I think Insomniac over-corrected with Ratchet's character a bit. Ratchet & Clank are more likable for their reactions to the world around them and the absurdity of their universe than as actual characters. Both of them are pretty much the same people from Going Commando to Deadlocked. And Ratchet only becomes more bland in the future series. But yeah, I still love 'em anyway.

@@SyntheticMan I don't think that is really a case Tools of Destruction Ratchet has a pretty bad fight with Clank and do have their differences still, but it is shown despite the strain they still have the friendship they developed post PS2 era A Crack in Time is rather showing their growth as characters together and how Clank would give up his purpose of being the keeper of time to continue being Ratchet's best friend, and Ratchet would continue his life with Clank rather than go back to the Lombax dimension. Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank have almost identical writing to the PS2 games, with Size Matters Ratchet still being more of a wildcard and Clank being the rational one All 4 One's story focuses more on Qwark and Nefarious's relationship as a point of interest, and Full Frontal Assault has almost no story. Into the Nexus mostly focuses on Ratchet's decision not to look for the Lombaxes. But overall, the games past the first game still do a good job comparing and contrasting ratchet and clank while keeping the friendship they developed in the first game

I also think it was a necessity to both bring in new fans and seeing that the movie was a box office bomb while the game was a financial success probably taught Insomniac Games to stay out of the movie buisness and stick with gaming.

I personally like the weapon design and even the "tank controls" in rac 1 because they encourage you to be more creative and cautious rather than just running in guns blazing. one of the things I love about this game is that it gives you a set of tools with their own strengths and weaknesses and lets you use them how you see fit. this applies to movement as well, which is why strafing with the thruster pack is so situational, whereas in the later games you can easily just run head first into a room full of enemies and slaughter them without really having to plan your attack or anything. I'll admit rac 1 didn't do this absolutely perfectly since yes you CAN beat the game without buying any weapons aside from the devastator (or technically buying NO weapons, but you're not supposed to be able to), and you CAN still run in guns blazing, but that's not always an optimal approach. I love the OG trilogy, but rac 1 is always the one I end up coming back to the most because it just offers a lot of creativity that I feel like the later games don't have in them.

Ratchet was not a jerk; he was just highly individualistic and hedonistic. He did not feel any sense of obligation to this frankly undeserving galaxy populated with really selfish, self-absorbed people. He wasn't trying to save the World, but rather to experience it. If he had been the kind of person who does good things for free, not only would you have had a story as bland as the film and its tie-in; he also would have never survived. Ratchet honours his deal to Clank in Act One, he avenges himself against Qwark in Act Two, and he uses what he has learned and acquired along the way to defeat Chairman Drek in Act Three. Honestly, for him even to call himself "selfish" for rightfully seeking payback against Captain Qwark was a bit too generous. He really did not owe that to Clank. This was never their war to fight, but they did it anyway, and that's what I consider so relatable and beautiful about it. These things are complicated, and you can't call yourself a hero if you expect someone else to save you. Clank expected Qwark to save them, and see how that went. If we expected Ratchet to be some sort of a hero, we're equally duped. You never do things for free in a world where everything is for sale, and why should you? This Game taught me how to win and earn my way through Life, and honestly that's more heroic than being the goody-two-shoes who saves the World "just because" but never has to settle his debts. Three cheers for old Ratchet, and four cheers for Meritocracy. Insomniac was wide awake for this one. *[({M.M.)}]*

Yeah, I like the older ratchet and clank games too, but rift apart is definitely a step up in the right direction. Rift Apart not only plays the best, but also is the most accessible in the series; the worlds feel the most alive and weapons work and feel the best. The older games definitely had a better story in my opinion, but you can't have everything in one game and Rift Apart is the sequel to into the nexus the series always deserved, not that remake of a game that came out in 2016. It's good to see that insomniac games are getting back in the groove.

Whilst the game play and graphics/visuals are really stunning and super engaging to play in Rift Apart. It doesn't excuse the absolute smooth-brained story telling, the characters being dulled down to blocks of wood, where if they get into any conflict, 20 seconds later its resolved by saying sorry and also the Abomination that they turned DR Nefarious into. It's the term that you and many others use now "oh we can't have everything in a game" that allows these game companies to create half-baked games and ideas because we as customers just let it happen. Rift Apart is a 7/10, if the story and characters were actually any good, it would be a 9-10/10.

@@MartinHindenes i disagree. In my opinion Rift Apart is OK to good... but not the OMFG AWESOME thing it got hyped up... For me, it wasn't nearly as bad of a letdown as KH3 or FFVII FR. However it felt more like Quest for Booty or Into the Nexus rather than, for example, A Crack in Time (which ground it retreats a bit with having Ratchet and Clank split up again). Gameplay is good graphics are great. Weapon choices overall fine. But i miss the groovytron and the party mushrooms are no replacement for Mr. Zurkon. No Lawrence is a major letdown because his snark at Dr. Nefarious was always a highlight. Also Dr. Nefarious' running gag didn't make an appareance, so instant minus points. Emperor Nefarious also wasn't really impressive imho. He was a bit too goofy or at least didn't switch between sinister and laughable as well as Dr. Nefarious in older games did. His (german) VA didn't help either. Sounds more like a petulant 17 year old or so. Also as i said before Dr. Nefarious got a new VA in german which was a major downgrade. Clank I think also got a new VA but he at least sounds similar. I alos think that the whole switching between Rivet and Ratchet overall didn't really click with me. It reminded me a bit of the MJ and Miles Morales parts of Insomniac's Spider Man. Luckily RnC didn't have a gameplay switch. But still. It's been ages since the story got continued with a PROPER part of the series. And for a return I'd have prefered to spend more time with Ratchet AND Clank, rather than also having to introduce Rivet and KIT. Might also have to do with how we're thrown into the dimension that is pretty much already set up for a big blow off. But "why care"? We have little relationship wth them other than there are counterparts to the characters we know and Emperor Nefarius. And overall the game feels a more about Rivet VS Emperor Nefarious with Ratchet and Dr. Nefarious mainly there to introduce them. Linkara, in his review of Flashpoint, raised a similar point about the Flashpoint Timeline characters. There, all that stuff got tie ins... but why care? When the timeline is fixed, they'll never have existed to begin with. Here it felt for me like the stakes for RIVET (the dimension stuff was caused by Dr. Nefarious and RnC) were basically just there because "Emperor Nefarious evil.".. and he didn't even take the stage until halfway through the game. Also felt a bit forced when Rivet and KIT gave Ratchet "shit" for being worried/might not be interested in looking for the Lombaxes... the game apparently forgot about the events of Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time with the dangers that just "go looking for them" could bring... and the dimensional troubles of Rift Apart itself. No, the game is basically just "Ratchet fears that they might not like him!"... It wasn't a bad game but in my opinion also not the great big bang for PS5. It feels like Rift Apart is Insomniac getting back into the groove... but not quite back there yet. I hope the next big RnC won't wait til the PS6 and will be a banger.

@@undertakernumberone1 I agree with some of your story points - I did miss the Nefarious Lawrence duo, kinda unnecessary to cut them up, and I was also a bit disappointed by the final stage boss fight. Some missed opportunities like being able to play as Giant Kit, and the arena challenges were too few. However the story presentation was amazingly well done, even if the story was somewhat generic. The animation and voice acting was on point imo. I quite enjoyed it. I think the gameplay was stellar and definitely took some good lessons from A Crack in Time. I also really enjoyed the weapons in this game - the visual effects from combat and the planets in general is fantastic, and I love that you can feel the action in the controller. Music was also surprisingly good and a good step up from the 2016 game (although not close to the originals).

It wasnt bad... but it just lacked some stuff to be great. And tbh. Imho the Arena in rift apart felt a bit meh. In regards of VA, it might be due to the dub, or just differibg opinion. For a "succesfull version of nefarious" the emperor sounded unimpressive imho. Also the armors... i appreciate the concept, but i think i liked the older armor system more... and the designs weren't stellar... I kinda miss the Dreadzone armors, they had some great designs.

It is quite possibly the peak of the R&C formula and does so much right that most of my critiques are nitpicks or stylistic preferences. The combat and platforming are more engaging than ever, and the writing is very character driven with some PS2 style satire. Check it out if you're lucky enough to get a PS5!

I saved up for the RYNO on a fresh save file just to see if it was doable and it indeed is, no grinding required either just being an ammo miser. The wrench is a lot more powerful in 1 than in pretty much the rest of the series so it's not even that much harder without all the weapons.

The problem for me is that for these kind of games that focus on gameplay I'd rather be playing a game like ping pong in real life or whatever than them. The way I see it if a videogame doesn't stimulate my intellect with something other than gameplay it failed to reach its medium potential, the narrative aspect of the medium should only be limited by the technical limits of the time, not by choice. This is why I don't like Nintendo generally speaking, for example. You wanna do a game where gameplay matters? Fine, doesn't mean you have to sacrifice the narrative element, take Hollow Knight for example. I don't see the appeal of stuff like Mario.

  • @richardsinclair7661

Jesus Christ, could you come off any more pretentious? Perhaps you didn't mean it that way (I assume you didn't), but that really doesn't matter. Your spiel about "games focusing on gameplay" doesn't make any sense. ALL games focus on gameplay. Maybe it's not the reason people buy a particular game (For example, a great many Final Fantasy fans buy for the story, while the gameplay is secondary), but that doesn't mean it's not the focus. It doesn't matter how interesting the narrative is, if the game's not fun to play nobody will play it. End of story. As for why people play games like Mario and Ratchet & Clank, it's because they're light-hearted and don't require a whole lot of thought to enjoy. I like intellectually-stimulating games as much as the next guy, but sometimes I just wanna sit down and shoot aliens with a big gun and not have to think about it. That might not be to *your* tastes, but oh well. Games are allowed to exist without having to be pinnacles of their medium.

  • @golDroger88

@@richardsinclair7661 Do you know what focus means? It means it concentrates on one detail. There are two categories of videogames, despite the term videogames is used for both. The first one is a digital game, like Pong. The second one is not a game but it has a ludic element to it, something like Metal Gear Solid. So what is the difference between the two? The main difference is the presence of a relevant narrative element or a lack thereof. A game like Mario is a glorified Pong with an afterthought narrative element, a digital game, it's not the same medium as Metal Gear Solid. Using the term videogame to describe both is a decade long mistake that should be corrected as soon as possible. Why would I be "pretentius" simply because I am not interested in playing games that you enjoy? Seems to me that you are refusing to acknowledge the clear difference between videogames because it would make you feel inferior or something along those lines, who knows but it certainly has to do with your emotivity.

It was added later as another mechanic after the first entry. First game was more about using any weapon. Others "rewarded" for continuously using the same weapon, where even more later titles would be beneficial if you wanted to fight in the arenas.

The Megacorp logo is everywhere in Rivet's universe, I personally consider that foreshadowing 2. Goons4Less make an appearance in Rift Apart as the spiritual successor to the Thugs4Less from Going Commando 3. After beating the game and starting challenge mode you can buy the bouncer from Mrs. Zurkon 4.The Plumber said in R&C(2016) that he'd "See us in the next Reboot" and then, with the exception of the end credits, didn't make an appearance in Rift Apart

I think the main difference here is that the later games had the levelling up system, so even if you had weapons you didn't like as much as others, you still wanted to try them all to see what you could level them up to if you use them enough. In the first game though, there was no real incentive to use weapons like the Decoy Glove, or the Walloper. You can chalk that down to "first game problems" in Ratchet & Clank's case.

The original Ratchet and Clank game is my 3rd favorite R&C game behind Going Commando(2nd favorite) and Crack in Time(favorite). I do like how original game have multi pathway within a planet but sadly the sequels sort of drop. It kind of like how original dark souls had a connect world but the future games abandon it. I would argue this game have the best soundtrack in the whole series. Tracks like Gemlik Base( 2nd favorite R&C song in series behind Obani Gemini), Metropolis, Novalis , Veldin, and Blackwater City are great to hear. Chairmen Trek is my favorite villian in the series because he actual seem pretty evil. I am not biggest fan of Dr. Nefarious since he appear in 4 games and once again in rift apart. I do like how original R&C , R&C: Going Commando, and Deadlock message is about corporations being bad. I might have lot of nostalgic for this game since PS2 was my 1st console and this one of my 1st games I ever played. It pretty sad how this series decline over time especially with the writing department. I would say R&C into the nexus was last decent R&C game and it was okay. PS4 game feel like it not part of same series. I am afraid that rift apart might disappoint me because from the trailers the game look like it direct to little kids and reuse weapons. Sadly Ted Price say people who like the original game need to grow up. Maybe it was best for R&C to die on PS3. My hope for the future is someone making a great fan game or a indie game inspire by PS2 trilogy.
