Hey Drew, Thanks for this educational video on humane pesting. As a kid, nearly 45 years ago, my friends and I would go "hunting" with their Daisy or Crosman pellet/bb guns. We weren't supervised and none of us really knew what we were doing. We didn't properly sight in our guns or scopes and we usually tried to take shots we realistically couldn't or shouldn't have tried. As a result, a lot of birds and squirrels suffered more than they should have. I will be moving back to the US with my family soon and intend on teaching my children firearms safety, fundamentals, and humane harvesting/hunting/pesting and living off the land and self sufficiency. I really appreciate your videos because you made my job a lot easier. Your message and stressing safety and humane behaviour really helps get the point across from an independent responsible person. Great video. Just started homesteading an need some help getting rid of rats around our chicken coop. Questions: 1. They sell this rifle in .177 and .22 versions. Any difference when it comes to shooting rats? 2. What kind of practice target is the one you showed in the video? 3. What scope do you recommend for this gun? Thank you.
@g0ssage
Жыл бұрын
The reason I’m asking about the scope (I know you mentioned it on your video) is that I could not find a Hawke 3-12x50 for $100. Thank you.
@TheWeaponizedHippie
Жыл бұрын
Although the .22 round hits harder, the power produced by the .177 is more than adequate for humane rat control - also the .177 round travels with a flatter trajectory than the .22 making it easier to be pinpoint accurate. In addition the .177 ammunition is cheaper. I recommend the .177 as it has proved to be very efficient for me. I would recommend JSB Hades 10.44 grain pellets for accuracy and destructive power at the target. By the way, always practice with the same type of round that you will be using for the rats. I use a generic 'pellet catcher' target box with generic paper targets (all from ebay) and another good practice aid I use is a steel rat target made by Remington - very reasonably priced too. Mine cost the equivalent of 15 bucks. As for scope - see if you can find a Hawke Quick Mount 3-9x50. It really is a good scope and should be under the $100 tag. (Comes with mounts ready to go). If you find you need night vision, I know a friend of mine (MountainSport Airguns has had good results with a OneLeaf set up. I'm currently using a Pard NV007V, and can recommend this also - priced around $325 to $380 - ish. I bought mine recently for equivalent of $365. It fits directly onto the back of the scope. Hope this helps, and very best wishes with your homesteading - it really is the best life. Drew

I think the problem with Co2 is you cant or shouldnt let the cartridge in the rifle. Also I have seen videos of people who killed rats just with 6mm BBs and airsoft rifles. So from that any air rifle which shoots .177 or .22 has more energy and will do the job.

If getting into air rifle shooting, yes the pcp is easiest to get good shots at paper targets etc, a springer will do you confidence no good to start, pcp is expensive purchase so co2 could be a good option to wet your toes BUT if you want to start killing rather than paper targets you need to respect the animal and use the correct tool, even if rats are horrible vermin. The correct tool would be a pcp or more correctly buy the cheap springer learn to use it properly THEN start the jump to killing, just my view.
@TheWeaponizedHippie
Жыл бұрын
I agree wholeheartedly with every word in your comment my friend. I was hoping I made it clear that I have utmost respect for every living thing and that 'humane' is the absolute key. I would never recommend to go at taking lives half-assed. Before using any air rifle for this I say it's necessary to chrono the rifle with the selected round - at the intended target distance. The Cp2 with rifle barrel option is putting more than enough energy into the target at 20 yds using Hades, carrying around 7fpe into the rats head. It is also an accurate rig. However, most co2 rifles are definitely NOT suitable for this, and I would recommend a pcp every time. I now use a cheap pcp - a PR900/Stormrider - simply because it's always ready at a moments notice. It's a cheap rifle at around 200 UK and has a small tank making it easy to hand pump. No expensive compressor needed. I think it may be time to make an updated video on this subject. Thank you for your very well put comment. Drew

My neighbour hates rats. He's terrified of them. I tell him I shoot them in the back garden. But I never do. As long as they exist, and waddle across his lawn from time to time, he puts up with the sound of my occasional shooting sessions. I like target shooting really. As you can guess I have a thriving rat, fox badger, squirrel and wood pigeon population visiting my back yard. But that's no problem. They are woodland rats and are just part of the food chain. We all live next to a large wood. They never come near the house. They're happy were they are. My neighbour doesn't know that. Anyway It's my deer hound lurcher that breaks up any nests. He has a rather funny habit of urinating on hedgehogs as well. I wouldn't have a problem shooting rats if they were a real problem. But its not like I'm on a farm or anything and have to protect grain or crops. Your bang on about rat poison though it's a killer for everything else as well. The vet had to give my old dog vitamin k once. She was okay. Fortunately my new dog doesn't have a killer instinct like my last one. He's more of spotter chaser and tracker. Fantastic at night. Never wrong because I lamp them sometimes. Not for shooting though. He keeps one eye behind him as well.thats how I learnt that foxes can't resist breaking cover to have a look you after you've passed them by. But I don't harm anything like that and neither does the dog. They're like pets to some people where I live. If I really want to find one I just eat a ham sandwich on the doorstep at 2 am. They find you. I had a Manchester terrier before that, not the show dog toy one, but a real lean one, like a small doberman. She was a real ratter. Her muzzle was always covered in blood after she dived into the undergrowth. Pure instinct couldn't stop her.she used to play with them like a cat. But she could take out a nest in the blink of an eye. Dead rats everywhere. But it's best to clean them up after because of disease . Never touched rabbits though I used to have a few as pets she used to play with play with them as if they were puppies.

Awww I felt sorry for the hedgehogs getting peed on! I usually end up rescuing underweight hedgehogs at the end of each season to help them survive the winter - then I let them go and they tend to stick around for a year or two. Agreed, rats are part of the ecosystem and I don't go looking for them. If they'd quit trying to chew the cabin out from under me we'd get along just fine. Thanks for a lovely comment my friend, Drew

Thank you.

The reason I’m asking about the scope (I know you mentioned it on your video) is that I could not find a Hawke 3-12x50 for $100. Thank you.

Drew

@@TheWeaponizedHippie Fantastic. Thank you Drew.
You are a Bogen and I'm a Redneck, bro! Have you tried a Sig Sauer M.P.X? And good to know, bro!
👍😉
Seen what poisons do some years ago on a farm rat bait down.rats eat poison cat catches rat then they get it blue puke entails then leggit to the vets.
I think the problem with Co2 is you cant or shouldnt let the cartridge in the rifle. Also I have seen videos of people who killed rats just with 6mm BBs and airsoft rifles. So from that any air rifle which shoots .177 or .22 has more energy and will do the job.

Yeah true, that's the only thing that bugged me about the CP2 really - but I've replaced it with a PCP rifle now.

@@TheWeaponizedHippie which one? P900?
I am originally from Bosnia and we had rats,mice and all other critters but for last 26 years I have been living in Canada 🇨🇦 and Never saw a rat,I saw a mouse 🐭 at shady KFC once and called Health and Safety Food inspector.I ain't eating where mice poop 💩...We had no weapons in Bosnia Soooo we used pitch forks or if you're good at throwing knives even better...Anything that can shoot I find it fascinating,even rubber band and toothpick..That's just me,I don't know why I am like this,that's a noice long barrel pistol,you can definitely shoot a rats with it,,Very Nice 👍...

Mice at a KFC... nice 🤮 Yeah you're right about knives - a well thrown knife is great, fast, and silent tool. I love knife knife throwing, and axe too. Drew

Drew
Surround your garden with motion activated solar powered lights you'll never see another rat. Position them inches off the ground it scares the shit out of them.

Yeah tried that. Rats around here seem to appreciate light - makes it easier for them to see what's around. Seriously, they don't care...

@@TheWeaponizedHippie Wow .... I really thought I was onto something there, anyway I've put mine away so I can employ the cp2 with your chocolate spread nail and lid trick🤣👍

Hiya boss im lost for words .have you seen the u tube video ? 27 rats killed my birds .? Good grief ! Im sure the bloke means well but christ he actually catches them by hand and releases them !! How nieve 🙈🙈

Ha yeah I saw that. I actually like his ethics, but..........
Don’t shoot all the rats yet we might be eating them soon 😂. I personally will only kill an animal if I’m going to eat it. Like my fishing I do catch and release. You must have respect for the animals you’re hunting try and kill it cleanly.
