    RPi5 4Gb is available now @ £59 and 8Gb @ £79. So you guessed pretty close. Price in the UK.

    It was a very rough test, I wouldn't give up hope as I expect bugfixes and updates to be ready for when the pre-orders are sent. At minimum, the pi will perform just as fast as 4 - with all the benefits of having a faster clock and potentially better boot drive (m.2 PCIE)

    The mini HDMI decision is mystifying to me - who dual-monitors with a Pi, and why? Also, I would've liked to have seen more RAM than the same amount we had pre-pandemic. That said, I'll be picking on of these up, eventually.

    To be honest I probably should have just went with $100 mini PC or really I should have just went with the Zima blade. But I know the pi has a really great community around it.

    How can i make smart plug turn on and off by web page (excel type) values? I want my heatpump to switch from 2 power sources via smart plug + automatic switch (made for generator backup). There is web page that show price per kw any given hour for 24h period. I want heat pump to switch to power source that has constant cost per kw when grid price goes more than 0.13$/kw. Maybe make my android phone look at values on web page and then connect to smart plug and set up timers? Like once every night be good. But how to do something like that?😅

    I would redo the video tests with the Fan on the system. Likely your dropped frames were a side effect of the system throttling down due to heat.

    @@notenoughtech , the fact is that Raspbery Pi is no longer a platform for hobbyists as too many enterprises have jumped on the boat causing the permanent shortages resulted in stellar prices. Moreover the development of Raspberry Pi is not going anywhere as they've never added native PCI-E SATA interface to their boards making them useless for data storage application. So it looks like the release of the V5 is made just due to the component obsolescence the previous Pis were made of.

    @@phil2768 well there are SBCs available for quite a while with same quad Cortex A76 but with quad Cortex A55 as well. And it's currently PRE-ORDER! RPi4 came with quad Cortex A72 which was around the same performance and RK3399 (dual A72 + quad A53) so it didn't matter it did arrive quite late. RPi5 isn't even here yet and it already offers less.

    So, still no native support for booting off of SSD without a bunch of tricks instead of having to use the crappy MicroSD cards that fail all the time? The single biggest gripe I have heard about Rpi since day one was the reliance on those SD cards which have a terrible track record, and here we are at gen 5 and that still has not been addressed.

  • @phil2768

    @phil2768

    8 ай бұрын

    You can do this already (with a Pi4) - no tricks required. You can even boot and install over the internet straight to an SSD drive connected to USB3 or MicroSD which is now twice as fast (or even using the new PCI express for storage) by plugging in an ethernet cable which will boot straight to Pi Imager. On Pi4 it cannot connect with WIFI (not enough room in EPROM) but it may now be possible that this has been overcome in the Pi 5 - so you would just power on and if no bootable device is connected (MicroSD or SSD) you can install over the internet and now with PCI you'll be able to install to storage that way too.

    I have been natively booting from SSD on Pi 4 for three years? No tricks required. My Pi has not had a microSD card plugged in at all in all that time. The Pi 5 will also natively boot from SSD. You seem to be complaining about a non-issue.

  • @cmh31909

    I should have clarified better what I meant. I meant a native connector for SSD directly on the Pi without having to use Hats or USB to attache the SSD.

  • @phil2768

    @phil2768

    8 ай бұрын

    @@cmh31909 ok, yeah, I get that. The Pi5 isn't perfect, for sure. the PCIe will now allow for M2 hard drives. I think keeping the flimsy mini HDMI ports was a poor move but I guess it is a space saver and ditching the audio jack now means ppl will need a USB adapter to allow that. Overall the performance specs do make up for a lot of the 'anomalies' - I did pre order one yesterday but yeah, I think some other tweaks could have made it shine.

    Considering the design principles... it's hard to add better and better features without dealing with price increases. PCB is packed as is. Note that raspberry pi 1GB was priced 35 and gave as much performance as £75 one. (Minus RAM). This made it insanely affordable. It's still a mission to introduce cheap computing to ppl who can't afford more expensive solutions. Zero 2 is 75% of the rpi4 power and costs under £20.

    PREORDER NOW! then we see how much we build. kinda silly. bcoz we not need rpi5 that usae more power and get hot and do same thing as rpi4. where i get cheap low power RPI2 i need MANY lol its silly they try sell 4GB first then 8GB then 2GB with 35buck. i dont think 16GB come YET. like i said i need lotsa low power RPI for project. RPI3-5 not those. but 2 camera connector is interesting i wait what peepol get from them. can they use same time and get 3d object tracking or poor mans bedroom 120angle 3d pov cam LOL

    Between Zero2 and RPI42GB there is enough in budget lineup to please most of makers. raspberry pi 5 is a high end product in their line. It's more than most of single projects will require. Not once I maxed out raspberry pi 4 in my projects. We all strive to have better bang for your money but with the ramped up production of pi4 .. we are finally having good availability of these Vs new boards The pre order was less expected if I'm honest but judging they are able to produce rpi4 to fill the demand... going blind into rpi5 and more expensive models may not be a good business decision
