Ras Alula: The Battle of Dogali -1887

*For some reason, I erroneously call Haggai Erlich 'Haggai Elrich' in this video. Should not be a problem in the future.
*For some reason, I also call Lake Asangi 'Lake Asagi'. Whoops.
The 1880s were a difficult decade for Ethiopia's northern-most nobles. The rate of political change continuously accelerated, and among those changes was the arrival of one of Ethiopia's most dangerous enemies: Italy. According to some historians, the first battle of the Italo-Ethiopian war is about to be fought.

    This one’s editing was honestly quite rushed. Next ones should be better! Sources, as usual, are in the description. Also, there were two minor errors in this video - also cleared up in the description. Finally, I forgot to make this explicit in the video: the map I use for Dogali in this video is representative of how the battlefield may have looked given brief descriptions, but not accurate! Similar to how the maps for the Battles of Embabo, and Kufit were handled.

    I know its been 3 months ago but I had to say this. I never saw any youtube cover African history in this quality EVER! Most African history is buried somewhere and no history KZreadr is willing to go as deep as you and would rather read some Wikipedia article as a source. It's always been European history that people truly care about and African history is always seen as old tribal kingdoms where primitive tribal chiefs ruled. It's much more than that and to see a KZreadr go deeper into African history as one would go into European history is amazing. You are showing the world that Africa is much more than what they think it is. truly THANK YOU! I've always been interested in Ethiopian history however no one goes past the already known bits. It is like when someone skims over how France and England have been in a rivalry for over 400 years history channels never really discuss it in detail. Thank You again! hope you don't stop cause it's kinda getting harder to find actual good content during these times! GOOD LUCK!

    6:07 Oddly enough, we in italy have never heard of this. All we learn is that we lost again and again in ethiopia and that our colonial empire wasnt worth the effort. Sadly they don't go over ethiopian history or the various crimes italy did like stealing the axum obelisk. Edit: 10:32 Ok, that's laughable. These people go on and on how much better they are with their technology, but if someone changes his tactics to account for that, then it's dishonorable? C'mon

    The "myth of Dogali" has become much less prominent than it once was. I'd expect that, given the current political climate and popular sentiment on colonialism, it will stay dead. However, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, one could even find english-language sources reveling in the bravery of those Italian soldiers who fought at Dogali; a monument was erected at the town to commemorate those who were killed there. The same year as the battle, a Piazza was also dedicated to it, la "Piazza dei Cinquecento". Nowadays, though, things are reversed. Dogali is a pride thing in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and is usually otherwise framed in a more "pan-African" light, since people like to celebrate or venerate African victories over European armies. Thanks for the perspective though!

    when was Abyssinia called or changed to Ethiopia?

  • @yonasgebremichael323

    @yonasgebremichael323

    3 жыл бұрын

    Ethiopia was actually never called Abyssinia it was actually the corruption of the word habesha that gradually changed to Abyssinia and Abyssinia doesn’t actually represent the entire region of the country it only represents the northern part of ethiopia(Tigray) and neighboring country present day Eritrea...both of which existed thousand of years ago with which they were known during the ancient times as the Axumite kingdom and the D’mat kingdom. The name Ethiopia got recognition after the 14th century with the fall of the zagwe dynasty that arose after the fall of the Axumite kingdom(Abyssinia) ... so Tigray the Abyssinian people (ancient Axumite kingdom) combined with the Gonder kingdom(zagwe kingdom) present day Amhara to form Ethiopia
