    Great work as always from Status. We just finished a 2024 992 C2S and also do extensive paint correction prior to PPF. In our experience, we have found that PPF will cover and hide most paint imperfections and we sometimes make a judgement call as to how much clear coat to remove from the car vs. hiding the problem with PPF. Paint correct 100% for sure, but sometimes the cut is deep and the hide effect is safer for the car.

  • @STATUSDETAIL

    @STATUSDETAIL

    23 күн бұрын

    Agreed! I talk about this in a few videos especially on nasty defects requiring sanding. We aim to remove all the defects and jewel the paint into a ridiculously glossy state and then lock that in. But managing clear coat depth is a serious thing! If your thinking about that your already leagues ahead of most PPF installers 👍

    As a DIY detailer I appreciate your attention to detail and learn a lot from watching professionals such as yourself. I understand all the comments that say the price for this service is a tad ridiculous. I also understand that using a top-tier product is not cheap and neither is all the experience required to install it correctly! The old adage will always stand, cheap price = cheap job. If I wanted a PPF installed on a supercar to be able to protect my investment…I know who to call to have it done properly!

    I'll be the first one to tell you I'm expensive lol. I tell everybody including customers you can find a less expensive job. But it won't be the same experience. When you own such a expensive car the extra few thousand dollars is like deciding if you want Fry's with your burger. It's not a big deal one way or another. Some people do go to the less expensive places too. No problem with me. Gotta do what's best for you! Thanks for commenting 🙂🙂

    I would think they do great work but I've never seen it up close. I'm not sure how that business is structured currently either. I'm sure they have multiple employees. So that introduces questions like how many of them do PPF. Do the ones with most experience only do the really expensive cars or do you have a vetaren doing a car with a guy who has 6 months experience? At what point do you trust the new guy to work on a car by himself? I'm my opinion that's over a year because PPF is complex. Most companies can't afford to train a guy that long then risk he just leaves to make all the money himself. Tricky business. I've seen many of the videos on there channel. I think overall they must be doing a great job and are a good source of detailing information. Todd appears to be a top notch detailer. The tricky part is who else is doing all the work. That's why this business currently is essentially completely me. So you know my last car will look like my next car. No inconsistency from employee to employee. Safe to say esoteric does high end work. As does Larry at ammo and the other big names

    Great job!!! I have a question. I was recently looking at a Mercedes GLE580 and the paint has TONS of orange peel. It kinda makes the car look cheap for $97K. Without wet sanding it, would there be a way to polish it and then add PPF to "smooth" out the orange peel look?

  • @STATUSDETAIL

    @STATUSDETAIL

    22 күн бұрын

    Sanding is th only fix. In some situations I feel like STEK PPF actually made the orange peel a little nicer looking and some 9/11s that I've done but it's pretty subtle. Unfortunately BMW Mercedes and Audi all have pretty aggressive orange peel. We just bought an X5M competition as a family car and that also has pretty gnarly orange peel for an over six figure car. I agree it's unfortunate but I'm used to it and was prepared for it so my expectations are low for paint on those cars lol.

    STEK has 10 year warranty! Theoretically it should last much longer than that if your garage captain not driving it very much like I assume this car will be used. It is however a good idea to remove it around 8 9 10 years old is if you wait too long it can be difficult to remove. But that's more common when a car is like outside every day.

  • @STATUSDETAIL

    @STATUSDETAIL

    10 күн бұрын

    A catalytic converter is very different from a exhaust tip. You do need to be mindful of this too though! McLaren 720s OEM exhaust has like heat shield literally built into bumper due to heat and how the rear exit exhaust is designed. If you tune a 720 and do exhaust and or downpipes you start melting parts of that surrounding bumper and obviously PPF too. Anything shooting fire basically means your paint and PPF might not make it lol. A cat gets hotter than a exhaust tip though same thing with a downpipe. If the gtr dies open exhaust and any kind of flame tune that rear painted area is not lasting long.

    Idk what polish youre using but ive used all the big names, Koch chemie, Oberk, Rupes, Carpro, etc, etc, etc and the best polish with the highest working time and literally no dust whatsoever is 3D one. No need to wet the pad or anything. Specially for ppl. Its ahead of optimum hyper polish as its not as heavy and not oily or anything. Its literally the perfect polih and can cut just as good as the best compound with the right pad. Theres no byproduct on 3D one at all. And if youre not cleaning your pads in between panels anyways idk. Because a pad is going to clog regardless if the polish dusts or not. And im sure you know that when the pad clogs it diminishes the pads ability to do its only job. I switch to a new pad every section of every panel and when im finally out of pads i clean them quick and start the process over. Takes about 20 seconds a pad.

    @@STATUSDETAIL I get what you’re saying about trade offs but just try 3D one and see if it works. I started using it because at first I was mobile so doing multiple washes was kind of out of the question when I needed to get everything done within 12 hours. Sure you can wipe 99% of the dust off on the panel wipe down but you really gotta wipe the panels twice as the dust will rehydrate and I’m not 100% confident the first wipe is picking all of it up. I used to use rupes also but it was literally like saw dust it was so horrible. Oberk is better but still dusts bad but I like going from cutting right into polishing without having to wipe the panels as they work great together like that. The 3D one has no dusting, and it’s not really oily like some “no dust” polishes. You can cut with whatever pad, I like uro 50/50s, and swap pads and finish it out to a perfect shine without wiping down etc. you can work so much longer than with any other polish I’ve tried. And as I’m sure you know most of the cutting ability comes from the pad anyways so I’ve gotten completely rid of all my compounds because they’re useless after 3D one. Maybe try it out and you might like it.

    After the car is paint corrected I basically blow dry the car to 99% dry. Then I take a brand new clean microfiber towel with with gyeon prep. To do a very light wipe down of any residual water and then begin the PPF. When a car is fully finished and I'm washing it like for maintenance that process is similar I'm still going to blow dry it until it's basically completely dry but then I'll take something like gtechniq ceramic sealant "C2" spray that once or twice on the panel and then dry it with a drying towel and then go around the car that way adding protection and getting the 1% of water left over

    @@adnanabbas6900 I'm sorry that's the case! They might sell a PPF brand that doesn't offer the thicker version. Hopefully that's the case and they are honest people. Some people just don't like to talk about the thicker stuff cuz they don't want to inventory it. The reality in our situation is that if you want the film to be really invisible and look really good and have no stretch lines or adhesive lines then 9.5 times out of 10 you want the 8mil. Like I mentioned I think earlier in a comment if there were some really bad high impact areas for example on a GT3 RS or a 4 RS we might consider double layering film kind of like a tearaway on a race car helmet. So after about a year of driving you just pull off that second layer and then you still have the base. My honest opinion I find this more sensible than having a thick 10 well that still needs to be replaced after it gets beat up. At least when you have a double layer and really specific important spots you get to convenience of pulling it off and not needing to reinstall. A second double layer piece is usually a really precisely installed thing too so it's usually lower cost than you might expect.

Until the car comes to me and I show them everything that was wrong. Unfortunately most shops don't do The steps we do before the film goes on which means if they didn't know this either then your car had all the same problems but no one brought them to your attention. This is very common unfortunately. Many PPF shops especially ones that only focus on PPF don't even paint correct cars they don't think it's necessary. This is more of a philosophy difference especially if a shop begins as a PPF shop first vs a detailing shop that adopts into PPF.
