    I tried to buy a 260a ac/dc tig with pedal etc from Rtech using their interest free credit offer. Despite having an excellent credit rating they refused me because ‘ I AM A 78 YEAR OLD PENSIONER’. I bought a Polish/Chinese import, virtually the same welder wearing a different coat and a lot cheaper. I wait to see your attempt at welding 30 year old dirty 1.2mm aluminium. It took me weeks of practice to get it right. Good luck. By they way my resto is a Citroen SM

    As a former welder and stilk a welding inspector (NDT) i can tell you always clean the metal thorougly, also the oxide layer from the Luminium must be removed. When weldi g, always look at your meltbath. Watch out for tensions. Put the workpiece clamp (minus) as close as possible to the place you want to weld. Also clean the place where that clamp is mounted. No more then 12 liter gas per minute because of wirls that can take oxygene into the meltbath. Try to learn to move the alu welding rod or a knit rod forward between you thump, pointfinger and middle finger. Like you hold a pen. Like moving the pen(cil) forwards. This way, you do not have to move your hand forward and it can stay on the place where it or your elbow is resting during welding. It is for the stability and so. Keep the front glaas of the welding helmet clean. Clean it often. Keep the TiG tungsten rod in the torch pointy. Regards from Belgium.

  • @classic.obsession

    @classic.obsession

    Thanks Gerhard but on the Tig welder, isn’t the clamp to the plus not the minus? Regards.

  • @gerhard6105

    @gerhard6105

    7 ай бұрын

    @@classic.obsession Hello Gary, indeed: the when using TiG goes on the minus and the "workpiece clamp" on the plus side. That is why it is called workpiece clamp/cable. About grinding the Tungsten rod: that should be done in length direction. Axial direction. A nice (not per se) good weld is looks like as if there are small coins laying in a row on each other. Like playcards in a half stacked row on a table. When you do not clean aluminium, the heat you need to penetrate the oxide layer is high. And then when that is gone, your heat is to high because alu already melts at 660,3°C. So, you get a big hole in the metal you want to weld. That is when you have to clean off (grind) the oxyde layer. When you weld and you are in the weld helmet, you are relaxed and in your own world.

Bought a gasless flux core welder and it's brilliant up to 3mm..for the pits in the steel I've learnt to use Bilt Hamber deox Gel..paint it on and tape it up so no air gets to it..and it eats all the pits away...

    I find it interesting and a bit annoying that most of these kind of videos come from the UK. With all the rain they get it’s just business as usual to have so much rust and corrosion. In the US we don’t get that much rain and most people that have cars like this don’t drive them in the winter. They have not been daily drivers in decades,plus their values have skyrocketed so they are saved for sunny days.

    John. I’ve barely started. All I’ve done so far is refurbed the wheels, a bit of work on shocks and a bit of paint correction The restoration has only just begun so I’m a bit confused by your comments. Regards.

    Honestly Gary, pictures and content are amazing, but the music is - well - quite anoying. I follow you since the beginning, own myself XJ-S, 928, Silver Shadow... but cannot stand the music, have to click on mute.... What a pity. Leave the music out and try to be natural, do not act, just be you. Best regards, Chris
