Rare Japanese MRE: JSDF Ration Type 1 Taste-Test (First Review In English on YouTube)

Ғылым және технология

A truly rare look into a Type 1 Japan Self Defense Force Ration. To my knowledge, this is the only review of this ration in English on KZread (of course I could be completely wrong).

that seaweed called konbu 昆布 こんぶ in japan and that is not ginger its bamboo shoot called takenoko 筍 たけのこ in japan I’m afraid my expressions may be rude or hard to read, because I’m not so good at English. But please, please be patient! I will try hard to learn English!

Being a 3rd generation Japanese, these foods are familiar. The vegetable with the trout looks like bamboo shoots not ginger. The yellow pickle is from a Japanese radish called "daikon" pickled vegetables are a common side dish. It's often eaten as a kids dish with rice and spam, or wieners. (I still eat it)Japanese rice is sticky because it's easier to eat with hashi (chopsticks)

It might be a date code using the era date of the current Japanese emperor. In this case it would be the 18th year of the heisei period or 2006 and the next group of numbers would be month and day, February 3rd and the last would be some sort of lot code.

According to wikipedia pages of "戦闘糧食I型" and "レーション", this is very old type but not of WWII era. These have been gradually replaced by type2 from 1990's, and after being stocked as "emergency food", it seems it's no longer consumed in JSDF. At least JGSDF stopped buying this type in 2016. Note this review is of 2017. I don't know but I can guess the factory or the Army them selves might sold some of them at that time.

hey RC Gusto, the green thing probably is called "kombumaki". Kobumaki is a Japanese kelp roll. the browny thing(not ginger) is called "takenoko", means bamboo shoots. the number in the top of can could be the year and month of prossessing process, but it can use the emperors year... hope have helped a little, keep the great work!

Thanks for the interesting video. I think the rice and chicken could have used a packet of that Japanese seasoning we have seen in other videos. I have never seen anyone review a Japanese video with any input from an actual JSDF soldier to explain what exactly was issued with them meal. There obviously never are any snacks or accessory packs or drinks like tea or fruit drinks issued in the meals so I assume they are given separately. Oh and one last thing. I hate to see a skull just grinning up at me with a better set of teeth than I have. Liked and subbed.

Hey RCGusto, This ration looks pretty recent, you sure you didn't get your date codes mixed up? Considering how date codes go on MRE's, I interpreted the "0903" as September 2013 being the production date, and this food looks a lot fresher and more recent as oppose to a ration from 2003. Plus you said these are currently still produced, so I'm pretty sure you have a more recent MRE than an older one. Again I'm not 100%, but I'm 99.9% sure. So if I'm wrong someone please correct me. But if I've learned anything from the international MRE date codes they can be misleading if you don't know the codes of each country or region they go by.

  • @rcgusto2427

Marth that's entirely possible. I was doing this review under the initial assumption that these were no longer produced in cans. There was also a bit of rust on the can opener and some mild corrosion on the can rims, which made me think they were more likely 2003ish. Thanks for watching!

I was expecting one of those white Kamikaze bandanas to be enclosed as a dinner napkin. In case the day went bad, well... it would leave a person other "options".... after a (last?) meal.

sean ball my grandfather purchased it when he was in dental school. I inherited it when he passed away. I used it for study in medical school. It typically sits on my desk when it's not in a video.
