Rapture & Faith | Atheist Experience 328

The Atheist Experience 328 2004-01-25 with Martin Wagner, Ashley Perrien, and Jeff Dee.
There is often a fundamental difference in how atheists view the world and how theists do the same, and it often comes down to the role of faith. Theists often regard faith as a virtue to be looked up to, atheists as an illogical, lazy way of making choices. But it can lead to some interesting discussions though.

We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblog...
KZread comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZread comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

@@enigmatrading5251 I strongly disagree. I miss Dee too, but his arguments are very weak here. For example the part about the miliseconds per human Jesus supposedly spent on the cross is completely pointless. He acts mostly offended and idignant as a response to almost anything. He is much better when he can control those emotions. Tracy is much more able to get through to people with her sharp intellect and probing questions. Matt has a much more in depth knowledge about christian theology and logic. Jeff had his place on the show, but he is not better than Tracy and Matt.

Scientists are the new prophets. People work hard to help each other and perform more miracles than old prophets. Food and shelter are common, not scarce, but expected. All of this we should be grateful for. We should celebrate these achievements and keep working at improving even more. I don't know how people see this world as anything besides the most amazing time to be alive. Their are still lots of problems and technology can make new problems, but still are improvements for the most part. There are places that are not much harder to live than my life and life seems to always include struggles and growth.

My mother was a very convinced believer. She taught herself Koine and biblical Hebrew to be able to get to the more direct meaning of the scriptures. I always asked her how confident was she in her sources, she wasn't amused. She would get into arguments, and I don't mean discussions, with baptist ministers about the "rapture". I always enjoyed watching from the sides as she destroyed all of their assertions. She stated that there is no proclamation in the bible for any such event.

There is not one written eyewitness account of Jesus during his lifetime. Strange since he was famous at birth, because wise men expected to see the future king of Jews who was born from a virgin married mother. Every leading Christian scholar since Erasmus, five hundred years ago, has maintained that the gospels were originally written in Greek from 70 to 140 CE (Mark after the year 70, Luke about 110, Matthew about 130, and John no earlier than 140 CE). This proves that they were not written by Christ's apostles, disciples or by any of the early Christians. Others say: “There is no proof of the Gospels existing before 130 CE” Jesus is depicted as hugely popular in the gospels. Yet he is unrecorded by non-Biblical historians. Paul was the first one to write about Jesus around 60CE; but he, like everyone else, never saw Jesus. He experienced a vision of the resurrected Jesus. We don't even know who killed JFK, 55 years ago,how can we know what actually happened 2000 years ago, especially claims that challenge common sense and science, not to mention Logic??

  • @19Adey

John Kessler Jesus died on the cross so that we won’t have to die for our sins and be sentenced to hell. Hell is an eternal punishment for sinners and unbelievers after they die. Jesus was sinless yet he died a sinner’s death, went to hell and defeated satan and got the keys to death and hades and resurrected proving he is God. Many early writers outside the Bible attested of the facts of Jesus life, miracles and death.

@Adewanie, so God and Jesus created Hell in the first place and somehow Jesus has to die for ours sins which God created sins in the first place to bend the rules that again God created in the first place. Do you know how stupid it sounds? If God created everything in the first place, why go long around, to kill a God which unkillable to bend a rules of God to protect God's creations against the WRATH of God.

There were other men who were younger who were sacrificed on the Roman cross also who stayed on that cross for 3 or 4 days suffering being picked at by birds barely can breathe for those three or four days before they died. In order for Jesus to be the ultimate sacrifice he would have had to still be on the cross right now alive and suffering after two thousand years.

He was so close lol. I can take someone who admits there's no evidence for their beliefs most of the time. This was a decent call but at the end he just throws in the "just look outside" argument. All looking outside proves is that I exist, I am seeing things, and what I'm seeing appears to be a world that appears to exist. You could probably debate all of those things except the first one too haha. Look outside, therefore Odin loves you. Look outside, therefore Santa created the universe. Look outside, therefore Tony the Frosted Flakes Tiger died for your sins. Look outside is truly one of the dumbest arguments they have.

  • @Thormp1
    @Thormp14 жыл бұрын

Believer: Your Relationship with god is simply a profound and dynamic relationship with the self, with your ego. This is why god can seem so very real to you. In a sense he is real. He is you. This is why god's opinions are so very often your opinions. This is why two believers of the same religion can both claim to agree with god's opinion but not with each others. When you pray and god gives you answers you are the source of those intuitions. You are simply having a conversation with yourself and don't even realize it. This is why god can always assuage any doubts of the believer. You see, "God" knows exactly how you think because he is you. He knows your tastes, your biases and all the gaps in your logic. Therefore it follows that "he" knows what arguments you will find compelling and what mental gymnastics you are capable of to ignore any arguments to the contrary. Ironically I probably can't convince you of anything I stated above because of the very fact that it is in fact true. You are "god". The next time you hear someone preaching or waxing poetic about god, Jesus, Mohamed or Joseph Smith, change all the names and pronouns you hear them say, in your mind, so that they refer to the person speaking and trust me you will get a whole new perspective on life. This is why believers have such a strong emotional reaction whenever they encounter a non-believer. They simply misperceive the non-believers rational skepticism about the supernatural and occult as an assault on their "god" which is to say their own personal identity. There are a vast multitude of religions and superstitious beliefs in the world that espouse many mutually contradicting doctrines. Therefore they cannot all be true. but they can certainly all be false. Even if one were actually proven to be true it would still follow that human beings have a rather remarkable propensity for making up entire religions from whole cloth. I think that all religions and other supernatural beliefs are cultural phenomena of purely human making. Much of this impulse in human culture is driven by peoples existential angst, their innate and instinctive fear of death. Their own death and the death of the people they love. It can seem easier to deal with death by convincing ourselves that it is not real. "My loved one is not dead they are in the afterlife", we tell ourselves. And "Of course I will never die! that's absurd!". You all need to grow up. Embrace the suck! And make the most of the time you actually do have. You are mortal. Death is real...... Get over it. I sincerely and earnestly do not believe that gods exist. But you have each other. Perhaps that alone could bring meaning to your lives. However if you insist on believing in supernatural claims at a minimum please do us all a big favor and don't give your hard earned money to religion pimps and hucksters.
