Raptor 660 Start Clutch Removal/Install Pt. 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is the Removal/Install of the Starter Clutch on on 03 raptor 660. However, These instructions work on 01-05. In this video I walk you through the bolt sizes and best way possible to remove the flywheel, starter clutch and gear. You will want to inspect all components if you plan on re-using them. If you suspect signs of wear I would go ahead and replace it.Make sure to keep areas free of oil that do not need it(Ex. Stater clutch will slip if oil is present) or places that need it (Ex. any gears that are moving) to prevent dry start up ( Helps reduce heat).

Ive been trying to tackle the starter clutch on my 09 Raptor 250r. Ive gotten far enough to where im at use of the flywheel puller step. My puller i got which was supposed to be equivalent to the Yamaha puller, ended up being to small of a diameter. WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR flywheel PULLER?

So what was the reason behind the changing of your starter clutch? I've watched lots of these and nobody says "WHY" Were you having issues pulling on the starter rope recoil? Was the starter making making a noise when being engaged? Even with the spark plug out of the head was this engine very hard to turn over by hand??

You’re correct. 8mm and 5/16” (7.94mm) are different sizes. That’s a .06 difference and my guess is most sockets of the same brand have more of a variation than that .06mm.

There's a real simple way to get the magneto off the tapered end of the crank without having to put alot of pressure on the puller. Put a few lbs of force on the puller and then give the head of the center bolt a couple moderate taps with a ballpeen or mini-sledge, it will always pop off in short order.

  • @nerofluidis9282

There's really not much to it. 1) Put puller on 2) Tighten puller with a moderate amount of torque (15-20ft lbs to start) 3) Take hammer, give the center bolt that is pushing on the crankshaft a decent few taps with the hammer (*you don't need to hit it very hard*, the point is to send vibration down the bolt which will translate to the shaft and break the friction seal that is holding the magneto to the tapered end) 4) If it doesn't work the first time, tighten the puller a bit more (another half-turn or so) and do it again When it does work, the magneto will simply pop off with relatively little drama. What's great about doing it this way is that you don't need to tighten the crap out of the puller to get it off, meaning you don't have to worry about stripping the threads in the magneto, which for some reason Yamaha made quite shallow and therefore weak. The other benefits are that you won't risk mushrooming the tapered end of the shaft. I've done several Raptor mags this way and a half-dozen on other machines and it's far easier/less risky than using sheer force to pull it off.
