Industrial is something you can't just scrape the top of to explain, but to answer Smokey's supposition of there not being a lot of bands doing digital music at the time- there were. The thing is, industrial at this time wasn't mainstream, which is what NIN and Ministry did for the scene. NIN's first album released in 1989, but other notable acts were earlier- KMFDM (1986), Skinny Puppy (1984). Ministry (1983), Front 242 (1982), Killing Joke (1980) and Gary Numan (1979). A lot of these bands early releases could be considered new wave, or the 80's synth influenced sound that became industrial, became synthwave, even became vaporwave... To know the originators of the sound though? You really need to look at who these bands cite as influences- Lou Reed, Joy Division, David Bowie. Industrial developed when artists took the anger of punk, made it into a sound and combined it with the post punk sound of the 80's.

The first industrial band was a British group of visual artists that formed a band in the late 70s called Throbbing Gristle. Some of their albums would have "Industrial music for industrial people" printed on them. It was meant to be to music what Dada (Dadaism) is to visual art. It was antimusic. Music made the non-conventional instruments and sounds. Untuned guitars with missing strings, drills, saws, hammers, and some of the earliest samplers. In fact, before samplers, they created a loop based tape recording rig called the Gristleator that could do what samplers eventually would. The singer, Genesis P. Orridge, now a trans-woman was also heavily involved in the early Rave scene with Psychic TV. Another member of the band, Cosey Fanni Tutti was also a porn star. They were very avant garde and experimental, but not so easily digestible for the masses.

ah, the song originally made for the movie "Natural Born Killers" later included as the "b-sides" for the remastered anniversary edition of "The Downward Spiral".. this was pure (needed) musical insanity to accompany Oliver Stone's vision.. it was hard to find back then except for the soundtrack.. as for NIN, Trent Reznor was mostly the brainchild of NIN.. his in-studio drummer was Chris Vrenna, but when on-stage, his guitarist was Richard Patrick (lead singer of "Filter", egged on by from Reznor himself after touring to continue his own work).. "Hey Man Nice Shot" bolted him into the 90s spotlight.. i personally delight in hearing speculations of NIN's beginnings.. i can only say that i helped hand out Xeroxed flyers for local Cleveland concerts in '89/90 on foot for (literally) old telephone poles & local "cafes", esp at Coventry (Cleveland).. thanks for the reaction!

WIKIPEDIA SAID: Nine Inch Nails, commonly abbreviated as NIN and stylized as NIИ, is an American industrial rock band formed in 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Trent Reznor was the only permanent member of the band until the official addition of English musician Atticus Ross in 2016. The band's debut album, Pretty Hate Machine (1989), was released via TVT Records. After feuding with TVT about how to promote the album, Reznor signed with Interscope Records and released the EP Broken (1992). The following Nine Inch Nails albums, The Downward Spiral (1994) and The Fragile (1999), were released to critical acclaim and commercial success.

Someone mentioned earlier that this song is from the soundtrack for Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers, which Trent Reznor also produced. Maybe also of interest to rappers reacting is that as part of his producing the soundtrack, Trent is also responsible for all the rap on it, as he is a fan of rap and friends with Dr. Dre. Oliver Stone let him see an early cut without the soundtrack, so he later took Dre, then Dre and Snoop, then more people. It's a crazy movie, so they all tripped out on it and saw it over and over. The point is that Trent has his own ties to rap.

Maybe you guys should look up what industrial is. It’s more like using things that aren’t considered instruments which is why electronics come into play.

"I never said NIN was industrial, other people said that." -Trent Reznor NIN is experimental rock. I'd put them in there with Pink Floyd, Tool & Radiohead... Obviously none of those bands sound alike, but they all experiment with where they can go with sound & instruments.

Well you guy here a little fun fact about this song Burn it wasn't original on the downwards spiral album it was added later when it was re-released on the 10 year anniversary of it. The song was original on the soundtrack of one of the most controversial movies of the 90's Natural Born Killer's. If you haven't seen it i highly recommend it!

When I saw them live, he had a band with him. Amazing live show. Seriously one of the best shows I’ve ever been to! I think he took piano lessons as a kid, and it’s his main instrument… I’m sure he plays others but I’ve heard him say that when he composes music he bases everything off of ‘where it sits on the piano.’ March of the Pigs and Wish are two of my favorites. Oh and he’s from my neck of the woods (not Pittsburgh but pretty close)… Oh and here’s my obligatory statement that his wife is friggin hottttt 🔥 😍🔥😍

In the studio, Trent Reznor plays just about everything, and most of the drums are programmed on a drum machine or he has someone else playing drums, including having Dave Grohl playing drums on some songs from With Teeth. There's only one song with Trent playing live drums, March of the Pigs, because he was testing a mic and liked what he played. He plays drums, piano, keyboards, synths, guitar, bass, everything he needs for most of the songs. When it comes to playing live, though, he mostly just sings and will have a band playing everything. Some songs or tours he plays guitar, or keyboards.

Ooooh! You guys need to do Nine Inch Nails' first release, the first single Down In It. The verse is basically Trent rapping. It couldn't be more relevant to you guys. It came out in 1989 before the first album Pretty Hate Machine and the was followed by Head Like A Hole. Definitely check out the official video. Some of the original footage was lost on a runaway weather balloon and lead to an FBI investigation in to Trent Reznor's "murder" (because they thought it was from a snuff film). On MTV Kurt Loder even reported the Reznor had died. That'll all make sense when you see the video.

For live shows, Trent plays guitar: m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWiTmNGQpay-crA.html And keys: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Ymqcpc2uYpa9mag.html But in the study he's also played live drums at least once (for the song Piggy), and probably bass guitar also. When NIN got inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame this past year, they wanted to induct the band as just him and he insisted on them inducting several other touring members as well.
