Gerry wrote this after being unable to put out any music for a few years because of legal disputes concerning the break up of his band "Stealers Wheel....He took many trips commuting between London and Scotland to try and resolve the matter, staying in London near or on Baker Street and would often visit a friend nearby, late at night just for a chat...Gerry suffered on and off with a drink problem for most of his life and eventually succumbed to it in the early 2000's......but he truly was an exceptional musician and songwriter...I hope that you react to some more of his great music.

@@Isleofskye I shut down a barrage of competing salesman once at a business convention who were all vying for their attention and business by addressing the candidate VP like this, "Look. You're surrounded by competitors right now trying to buy your time and attention and interest. It's overwhelming. Too much to take in all at once here at a convention. I want to spare you all this noise. I want to meet with you Monday at 9:00 a.m. and show you what I have to offer. Then you can measure it against what everyone else has to offer. That lets you escape this barrage for the weekend so we can enjoy some drinks. How does that sound to you?" She immediately went for it (and I got the contract that Monday morning). And ten guys were SO pissed at me they didn't think of it. Amateurs all.

@@danrieke9988 Yes, well done. You have to separate yourself from your rivals and create an "edge" which you, successfully, did. I enter my 8th decade, next month in London on 18/5/.24, which,of course, you write as 5/18/24 (I have never worked out that Month then Day and fast forward to year arrangement), and as it is 7.10am,it is time for bed. Madame Tussaud’s & the London planetarium are also next to Baker Street tube station. One longish road, Regents Park at one end (although that section isn’t called Baker Street) if you keep walking all the way down the other end you’ll hit Oxford Street (West End). When I hear this song I often think of the years I worked on Baker a street. All useless information, but I thought I’d say it anyway.

Gerry Rafferty (RIP, 1947-2011) was a Scottish singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He wrote all of the songs for his 3 commercially successful albums in 1978-1980 -- "City to City", "Night Owl" and "Snakes and Ladders" -- and he co-produced them with Hugh Murphy (RIP, 1946-1998). It seems he didn't have a permanent band, but unlike Prince, he wasn't a one-man band in the studio. Many session musicians are credited on his albums. In America, "Baker Street" spent 18 weeks on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (Easy Listening) chart and peaked at #4 in July 1978. "Right Down the Line" is another iconic track from the album "City to City". It spent 22 weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart and peaked at #1 in September-November 1978.

'Baker Street' is about a man who dreams of owning a house. and living away from his nearest town. However, he is a drunk, and cannot achieve that goal. He drinks to forget what he doesn't have, and never realizes he's a "rolling stone" with no direction. Named after Baker Street in London (well known for where Sherlock Holmes lived: 221B Baker Street).

One of Gerry's renown bits is a song he did when with the group Steeler's Wheel, "Stuck in the Middle With You" which was showcased in an infamous scene in the Tarrantino file "Reservoir Dogs".

During one of my visits in London I went to Baker Street, and I didn't think about Sherlock Holmes, I only had this song stuck in my head. I was tired, hungry, on pain and happy.

This song used to come up on my magnavox clock cube with the flippers for the time each morning on AM radio in the 70s. It’s about him in music industry, baker street in London is like a famous street in any city where artists do their hard work.

Thanks, Peg! This is an awesome song.. holds good memories for me...the sound of freedom driving home from work on a summer afternoon.. a Friday, paycheck cashed.. whole weekend ahead... (p.s. Gerry was the lead singer for Stealers Wheel.. think "stuck in the middle with you") appreciate your reaction... Also, Gerry is a Scotsman.. why you say "girl".. .???

I'm a pub singer. I do a lot of shite (and a lot of good stuff too) but whenever I sing "Baker St" I always get people's full attention.

Gerry was so underrated as a writer. The guy was so talented and while he had some hit songs, this being his biggest and notable for the sax solo, which is amazing in its own right, Gerry hasn't been given the credit he is due. Check out - "Right Down the Line"
