Hi BP, an orchestra is a group of musicians, usually around 70 - 80 people. They are composed of strings (violins, violas, cellos and double basses), woodwinds (clarinets, oboes, saxophones etc) brass (trumpets, trombones, flutes) and percussion (timpani, xylophones, marimbas etc, but may also include drums). Symphonies are pieces of music which are usually at least 4 distinct parts or movements. A Symphony might include a choir or vocal soloist. You get different names for Orchestras, eg Symphony or Philharmonic (roughly the same thing). You also get a chamber orchestra which is much smaller. All orchestras are led by the Conductor who keeps the tempo and ensures all the musicians are playing in time and at the right place. The Composer is the person who wrote the symphony. Orchestras also play pieces which are not symphonies, in fact there is a symphony orchestra in NZ which plays a pretty great version of Darude’s Samdstorm!

Since BP was curious about what it's called when an orchestra is accompanied by vocalists (e.g. a choir), it's worth noting that a symphony that's composed for an orchestra and a choir, and possibly solo vocalists, is simply called a "choral symphony". The first choral symphony was Beethoven's 9th Symphony, completed in 1824. It incorporates a choir and soloists singing "Ode to Joy" in the final movement. It's set to a melody that's commonly called the "Hymn to Joy", which has been the Anthem of Europe since 1985.

Years ago, I bought this soundtrack because I thought it would be humorous, but appropriate, background music for a game night I was trying to plan for. That game night never happened, but I've never regretted buying this soundtrack, and I've listened to it far more times than I ever expected to.

Who, for example? It's a great score, and I love it and this performance. Such judgements are very much subjective. I'd rather vote for Hermann's score for Citizen Kane, Korngold's for Robin Hood, Rosza's for Ben-hur, or even Steiner's for the original King Kong, which really challenged what a score could do. Doesn't minimize my admiration for Morricone's work.
@galadballcrusher8182

I would also vote for Conan score by Basil Poledouris. Especially cause like this score tells parts of the story filling gaps with leitmotifs it introduces and intertwines with scene music.
@alanfoster6589

Poledouris' score reminds me of what the celebrated wit and pianist Oscar Levant said of Steiner's "King Kong" score when the film first came out. "It's a concert of Steiner's music with visual accompaniment". I feel the same about the score for "Conan".@@galadballcrusher8182

If you've never done it before...If you're lucky enough to live in a city that has its own symphony orchestra, do yourself a favor and treat yourself. Get yourself a ticket and get all dressed up and make an occasion of it. Hearing this, and other great music, performed by a full orchestra live in a concert hall is a life-changing experience. You won't regret it. EXTRA: check out the clip of the same orchestra performing the score from "The Godfather."

This is an amazing performance! This is massively fun to play on the guitar!
As someone who performed in orchestras and in choirs, I very much enjoy seeing your reaction and kind words. So many don't appreciate it.
Ennio Morricone is a master composer. I used to listen to this soundtrack on repeat when I was a child. John Williams is another master composer who has composed many soundtracks (eg Star Wars). This kind of music is what made me a band kid. I had some amazing life experiences playing the French horn in a concert/marching band. I marched in some big parades (Calgary Stampede, Disneyworld) and played some memorable concerts and won a solo award at a music festival. This soundtrack never fails to give me goosebumps. You’ve got to check out some local symphony because hearing to live is a whole other experience.

When he covers the dieing soldier, gets me 40 years after seeing the movie as a kid for the first time.
Ennio Morricone died in 2020. Amazing composer. His score to The Mission is one of my faves. A composer writes a symphony. The orchestra is the performers. The person leading the orchestra is the conductor (not the composer). Sometimes composers will conduct, e.g. John Williams is a composer but he sometimes he conducts orchestras performing the Star Wars soundtrack. The instrument at the opening was a recorder, not a flute.
If you dig classical check out Carmina Burana, Mozart's Requiem, and Beethoven Moonlight Sonata
The real genius is someone who can hear each instrument part and be able to put it all together seamlessly in their head before putting down on paper. That is crazy, to me. I played in an orchestra for several years. A dozen or more playing complexly different scores but as a whole it all comes together.
hello, Dane here... The Danish National Symphony Orchestra, does a LOT of famous scores, from movies, series, and games, they play live A LOT, just go through the vids on their channel and see... PS: the lady, a Sopran, having a solo, standing up top, @7:30, was her first solo performance, and she NAILED it!
Yes, Ennio Morricone (1928-2020) was an Italian composer two times winner (2007 and 2016) of an Academy Awards. The director, Sergio Leone, was also Italian and called Morricone for the music of all his western films.
This music is what metallica come out to at every concert they do .. once this music starts you know they are ready to come out on stage .. crowd joins in every time .. its epic .

Symphony: an elaborate musical composition for full orchestra, typically in four movements, at least one of which is traditionally in sonata form. Orchestra: a group of instrumentalists, especially one combining string, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections and playing classical music.
Ennio Morricone was no fool. He wrote some of the best music for films. Finally earned his Oscar for his final film, The Hateful Eight. He was also a childhood friend of director Sergio Leone.
Thank you Ennio Morricone for creating this wonderful music.

"A full-size Western orchestra may sometimes be called a symphony orchestra or philharmonic orchestra"
it's an historic dedication to an amazing, historic composer... Ennio Morricone. The movie is historic, in it's own way.. as a film. The musical composition is historic on it's own...

Great reaction ❤ I hope you show your friends this one. I love watching this masterpiece
They slayed it
I have grown to LOVE your reactions. You can feel the music, not just hear it. I was the music world for while, as dJ then a producer, way back in the dark ages. You know late 60's into 70's. Yes am a women and was strange and crazy. But now I am still 17/18 in a 76 year old body. I also love the Lord, the Trinity and truth. I love you watch such differse genres. I grew listening to Monks chanting on the way to mass. And just love GOOD soul touching music. I will recommend something to you that is really off but think you love it and open another door for you "Non Nobis Domine" down by Patrick Boyle. Blessings
A few years ago, I went to a big orchestral concert where several hits from various films were played for almost four hours, including this one. It was a fantastic four hours that went by far too quickly and the orchestra got a standing ovation and people clapped their hands sore. About two years later, there was a concert with great music from various games. It was absolutely terrific. Music is simply the best!
I laughed so hard with your questions. You are truly on a quest young man. Each instrument, are horse hooves, birds, the emotions of riding alone, I was raised on these albums and I still cry. Merricone was a genius. If I meet him in heaven I will bow to honor him.
Absolutely amazing musical score!!! All the unique sounds layered and blended throughout the music is fantastic!!! Really enjoyed hearing this after so many years, thanks!!
They do a few other Spaghetti Westerns as well like "For a Few Dollars More" by the same composer.
Yes Ennio Morriccone is the original composer and he is Italian
Quite some innovative music occurred in the `60's. This 'unique' song, created in '66, was a year of some provocative & unique sounds, ie; Beach boys -Good Vibrations, Righteous Brother's tunes, The Troggs and others.
Listened to this shurely 200 times, or more... Everytime there are some more little nuances, you did'nt recognize before. Absolute masterpiece in copiing a gem of music made for eternity!!! Will watch it a few hundred times more. And, of course, thank's for your reaction to it. Appreciate....
Morricone was a true composer. A master trumpet player. He studied with great modern composers. Then, he decided to "make something for a film". He took inspiration from a lot of different things, put them together in a single score... many times, for a lot of movies. He was a genius of course but he allways remained himself. And that's a rare trait. It's the third movie in the "dollar trilogy". These films made Clint Eastwood Clint Eastwood, I think. P.S: a mezzo soprano has a deep, sweet voice for sure! I love it.
When I discovered this I kept playing it every day for quite a while. You start noticing certain decorations as an homage to the movie, the hanging guy, the Clint Eastwood silhouette, the gun earrings of the "wawa" girl, etc...and what music! So loyal to the original score!
Thank you so much for this. I have never heard or seen the full performance but it did not disappoint at all! That was amazing!! Wow!
One of the finest orchestral vocal pieces on the Net!
Makes you really appreciate the talent and work that goes into Movies. This was awesome seeing it in real time. Bravo!!
Hi anyone who plays any instruments that makes music is a genuine genius and need all the praise going
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you're killing me on this one, you're right though, it never ceases to amaze me how gifted some people are
I saw Ennio Morricone, the composer, directing this and many other of his works in Berlin many years ago. Full Orchestra and 70-80 person choir. Amazing concert! Also cause my dad invited me and he is a massive spagetti western fan. 😁
Composer writes the music Conductor arranges the music - translates original score to meet their vision of the music - anything from tempo to what instruments are included (generating the music score) to harmonisation. They’re also the drill sargeant to get everyone to deliver the vision of the piece of music. They are also a visual metronome for all members of the orchestra to keep the correct beat along with guiding them in when they start / stop both the whole performance and also the individual components.
Love you are open to all music genre. This score is off the charts!!! Thanks.
the good the bad and the ugly is in my personl favorite top 5 movies of all time the score is so iconic and i have never seen this it was amazing im not amazed much any more on youtube but this was 😮
It's a treat to watch a musician/singer perform a masterpiece (i.e. Billy Joel Piano Man), but when a large group of people come together to perform a perfect piece of art, it's special on another level. This is one of those rare occasions. Chills!
As part of this concert they performed "For a few dollars More" and "Once upon a time in the West". You really need to watch both of those as well. This orchestra has done so many great performances that you could choose from.
I was at that concert .. everyone beyound their musical interest should hear a full orchestra play .. itssss amazing
So many memories with this song. My dad and I used to watch the movie when I was young and we both loved this song so much. Now I miss him even more 😢
Second part is called “The Ecstacy of Gold,” and is used at the end of the movie. The score is what lifted this “spaghetti western.” Orchestras/symphonies (IDK either) use movie soundtracks to entice new audiences, and this is a spectacular example. Musicians borrow from everyone!
So happy to see this in your channel! I grew up watching this movie with my brother. Such great memories! Thanks for posting!

The Danish orchestra has so many great videos on their channel.
An orchestra is a whole bunch of people segmented into whole instrument groups. (basically "a whole strings band/ensemble + a whole wind instruments band/ensemble + a whole percussion band/ensemble and what not are gathered together into one entity forming an = "orchestra") "A symphony orchestra" is playing exclusively traditional classical instruments (although here was an electric guitar involed but for that particular movie score it was necessary/part of the composition) "A Symphony" is a classical music piece segmented into several socalled "movements" (a movement is a section for a certain music theme/melody/sound sequence played out in different variations and is in avarage 10-15 minutes long) and a symphony is in avarage an hour long depending on how many movements the symphony has.
