Rapidan Dam 6-25-24 Rapidan Minnesota

Minutes before the house fell in.
The power of the water that you can feel when you are out there is incredible.

Seems crazy that with such good access no one is trying to clear the log and debris from the spillways! The many "Officials" are just wandering around. Where is the little excavator, crane truck, tow truck, etc??

Using a crane with a clam shell bucket, they could have removed some of the log jam and maybe made it much safer for the dam and surrounding land.

Not with how soft the ground is tho.. not really worth risking thousands of dollars in machinery being destroyed in a matter of minutes. Besides the impact would be minimal despite the amount of debris that has been swept away prior

Who ever owns that damn will be paying in the millions to each... All caused because they didn't do what other dam operators do and put in debris nets just upstream from the dam gates!!! What blows my mind is they made no attempt to save that house... NONE I've seen other breaches they have Chinook in there and cranes dropping boulders and rip rap and super sacks of rock to stop the erosion... Id sue the dam owner, the state government who supervises the dam and the local ema... All sat there helplessly...

@@chrisjohnson4666 Dude... there's nothing that could've been done to save that house. Real life isn't a video game. When you build that close to a dam where the edges of the river are soft dirt instead of solid rock, this is what happens.

I know the power of water is very natural, but there is something extremely unnerving about seeing that power scour the earth so far down. The layers of exposed soil look like a giant alien force took a core sample out of the land and just left a big hole.

The old reservoir is being scoured of sediment now. The last bits of bedrock that were keeping the level of the channel up are now gone and the water level is below the gates now. The entire river is now in the new channel and it’s eroding very quickly.

People are like that's the strongest dam ever ok people you've got to understand geology and the bedrock the dam was built into/onto you can see alot of the bedrock being exposed now and that's when the issue will start getting worse if these conditions stay the same or get worse.because that fast moving water carring rocks/debris in the fast moving water is shaving it all down fast

Yeah do what other dsm operations do and put in floating debris nets in front of the gates that you can use boats to handle... Oroville dam and others have these... probably less than 10k and this is all prevented... Also see a complete lack of imagination or maybe fortitude in the operation on private and public sides... One a crane with a grapple probably could of cleared the Debris some have reach of almost 200 feet and then no attempt to control the erosion by putting in large rip rap which they have successfully done in other dam breaches... Nope just sit there and do absolutely nothing...

Given the force of the current right now, what exactly do you think they'd should use to fill up the overflow breach? They could drive a dump truck full of boulders off that cliff right now and the current would just push and roll it downstream.

They need to be giving serious consideration to blowing the dam. Cleaning out the logjam sounds good in theory. Do I have any volunteers in the audience that will drive the equipment (large enough to do the job) out onto that dam right now? And, any attempt to shore up that dirt wall would have to be Herculean in scale. Simply dumping large rock over that edge would cause massive turbulence to the flow. Turbulence against dirt is like a saw blade against soft wood. Face it folks, until the dam is gone, the only thing that will save the dirt wall from continuous erosion is a drought. 🫡
