Rapid post-disaster damage assessments save lives | UNDRR

After a disaster, assessing the damage quickly can save lives and ensure timely assistance to survivors. However, when communication channels are disrupted, identifying affected areas becomes challenging. This video explores how Japan utilizes advanced technology for early damage assessment following disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.
Using seismic data, supercomputers at Tohoku University can model tsunami generation and inundation forecasts within minutes, crucial for immediate disaster response. Recently, on January 1, 2024, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula. The following day, light planes equipped with high-resolution cameras captured aerial photographs of the affected areas. Akira Doi from Kokusai Kogyo Co., Ltd. explains how Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data was used to analyze vertical and horizontal displacements, aiding rescue teams in planning their operations effectively.
"This aerial photo was very helpful for the rescue team to make the plan, which road we should clear and how we can access the remote areas." - Akira Doi

About UNDRR:
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has a big ambition: to help decision-makers across the globe better understand and act on risk. At UNDRR, we believe there is no such thing as a natural disaster. A natural hazard, such as a hurricane, earthquake, tsunami, or flood, only becomes a disaster when it impacts a community that is not adequately protected and whose population is vulnerable as a result of poverty, exclusion, or social disadvantage. We envision a world where disasters no longer threaten the well-being of people and the future of the planet. Sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda cannot be achieved without working towards the goal of building resilience.
