LichLordOfFlames I read the Wikipedia on Black Sabbath and regurgitated it before the song. Everything after the song starts are our off the cuff musings. Juliette is currently taking AP US History and AP European History so she has these things close in mind.

Don't overlook Geezer on bass filling the whole bottom and as busy as Bill Ward!

Ozzy said in one of his books that there were a ton of people particularly in the south bible belt area in particular that thought they were satanists. He noticed a group of them with candles outside of their hotel so he went down and sang happy birthday blowing out the candles lol Savage!

Black Sabbath were NOT a Satanic band. The ultra-conservative religious fraternity basically misinterpreted Black Sabbath's music and stuck that label to them. The bassist, Geezer Butler, was / is Catholic and was really upset about being called Satanic. As a response, Black Sabbath recorded one of the most religious songs I've ever heard! They had a large following, so the quesion for me is: "Are you doing one or more of these three partly because of BlackSabath influence?"

Holy cow!

Big fat, thick distortion, overdrive, is what Black Sabbath brought to our ears. Along with the "evil" sounding chord changes, heavy distortion hadn't been heard much, [a few exceptions} That's what wormed into my 13 yr old brain when I first heard War Pigs. I'd heard Zeppelin and others, but the sound of the guitar's distortion, and along with the power and intensity and mood, is what made Sabbath unique, and how heavy metal came about.

It actually was the bass-player Geezer Butler that came up with the idea of using the name Black Sabbath for the band. He also is an important part of the writing of lyrics. Btw, BS is not satanic or "the music of the devil". The devil themed image is first of all a style created out of an interest in occult mysticism. Check out the lyrics on After Forever. I think you would be suprised.

I used to play Black Sabbath Volume IV on third shift.

I'm sure some people already commented this but that wasn't a double pedal. But double bass drums were used in the 60s. Double bass drums were popularized in the 1960s by rock drummers like Ginger Baker of Cream, Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Keith Moon of The Who and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd. Now, some more suggestions for future "School of Metal" reactions: Deep Purple, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Saxon, Kiss, Diamond Head, Motörhead, Manowar, King Diamond, Alice Cooper, Scorpions, Def Leppard, Nazareth

I saw them twice, in 1970 and 71, on their second and third album tours. I remember thinking that they played exactly like their studio albums. And Ozzy jumping around with bare feet. Huge sold out concerts both times. Saw them at The Forum in LA.

Thank Black Sabbath for the metal we know today.

The amazing thing about Tommy Iommi is they before they started recording, he lost the tips of two of his fingers in an industrial accident. The accident happen just before he quit.

The accident occurred well before Sabbath, even before his time in Jethro Tull. He was 17 when it happened.

Just a note: The girl you're referring to wasn't on fire. She had been burned by napalm and was photographed running down a road. There is a very famous photograph of a monk that set himself on fire in protest. Your daughter has a very good history teacher if they're not only using the textbook but, also incorporating the music of the time. Sounds like a class I would have looked forward to when I was in school.

I agree with what you’re saying, the studio really does capture the feeling of the song in terms of the lyrics and the projection of the instrumentals. This live version does a good job though! 🔥👌🏻

Such a killer live performance. Bet they went thru some drum heads. Check out KISS Black Diamond 1975 live.

Love the analysis. This is one of the best filmed live performances ever. I don’t know how they could play any other songs after this given the energy expended.

I didn’t get to see them back then (as I’m 38 and wasn’t around) but I did get to see them 3 times at ozzfest with the original lineup and this song live with today’s sound tech is UNREAL!!! Got goosebumps all three time. “I am in the presence of legends!!” Lol

My dad knew them back then. I'm 56 now and remind everyone that this was completely off the wall in 1970. Playing live; no clever tech or mixing boards. Just pure skill and energy. Timeless. Priceless.

Bill ward is using one pedal for the hi hat and the other pedal for the bass.These guys all used to 15 mins from where i live and are by far my favourite band. I went to their last ever gig in birmingham and it was amazing to see they still have it.

Yes, even now (at least 1 year ago) Ozzy is incredible live on stage, he is pure energy and fun

As a kid in the early 80s a School pal of mine .Played Paranoid on his guitar and small box.In his bedroom. No music sheet. Heard it once and started to jam. Been a Meatal fan since.

Geezer Butler with a fantastic job writing the song, and excellent drumming by Bill Ward. Bill Ward, was so amazing on this track, one of the best drum tracks ever.This must be a very early version of the song because the lyrics are slightly different in some parts.

Oh, and Sabbath were never really "satanists", War Pigs is a brilliant anti-war song, and other songs that delve into darker subjects always paint them in the proper negative light.

You two are great. I love your Nightwish reviews. But Black Sabbath was my first love of metal and I still listen to them now. The cross they wear was gifted to them (they all wear it). As an antidote to evil sprits. I've tried for years to get a similar one. Just keep up the super reactions.

This version of the song is actually called "Walpurgis" it has slightly different lyrics to "War Pigs"
