Freddie said in a 1978 interview, “Our love affair ended in tears, but a deep bond grew out of it, and that’s something nobody can take away from us. It’s unreachable. All my lovers ask why they can’t replace her, but it’s simply impossible.” Mary Austin was the love of his life. 😢 🥰

Even now, all these years later, after all the great artists I have seen live, that performance was the best...the atmosphere was unbelievable...we all held up our lighters (no mobile phones back in the dark ages :) and sang along swaying to their beautiful lyrics and melody...just magical ♥

Although Freddie was gay, this was written for/about Mary Austin who Freddie had a long-term relationship with. They remained close throughout his life and eventually she inherited the bulk of his estate. It's such a love story which transcends all the trappings of gender and sexuality.

Okie dokie. If pretending a man who grew up in a homophobic world where homosexuality was at best a criminal offence, at worst a mental illness which could see the man in question committed to an institution for life and subjected to the most tortuous aversion therapies, was bi makes you feel better about him, go ahead. It really makes no difference to me. The fact remains he had many long-term and meaningful relationships with men and just the one - as a very young man when he was no doubt processing his own sexuality - with a woman, Mary. Lots of gay men form intense attachments which border on romantic love with women. It doesn't make them less gay.

Absolutely love how Brian reassures Freddie that it's Ok if the crowd doesn't know the song as well as Freddie was hoping. Have a feeling Freddie often gets the sing-a-longs going to rest his voice a bit but this time that wasn't going to happen except during the chorus a little. To me it sounds like the audience knows it but there is something Freddie picks up on the means he can't take a little break. Then he steps up and gives it his all. That little reassurance from Brian is so brotherly, so caring and supportive.

The studio version on “Night at the Opera” is also stunning - one of my favourite Queen songs. I got a chance to see Queen with Adam Lambert in 2020 just before COVID broke out, and Brian played and sang this song solo. It was SO good and at the end of the song, a video of Freddie walking onto the stage popped up. Brian put out his hand and it looked like he was touching hands with his good friend Freddie. So touching and easily the highlight of the concert.

Sooo, there’s a cover of Kenny Wayne Shepard Band’s “Blue on Black” done by Five Finger Death Punch feat. Brantley Gilbert, Kenny Wayne, and BRIAN MAY you have to review!! If you love guitar J. you can’t miss Kenny Wayne Shepard and of course Dr. May!! This was always a great song and this cover is no different. And all proceeds go to the Gary Sinise Foundation as a tribute to first responders. The video is AWESOME! Please check it out! 🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸

I met Brian May once a few years ago. My sister works for a planetary scientist. When her boss's space probe took pictures of an asteroid in the Kuiper Belt, my sis flew me to the east coast. So here I am in the hotel suite, rubbing elbows with all of these scientists and I'm the only guy in the room without letters after his name. These folks are speaking English. Pretty sure. But what they're saying is so far over my head that it might as well have been Portuguese. So I nod a lot. My sis walks up and introduces me to this tall fella with white curly hair. "This is Brian May." Okay? "Howdy" She sees me lost. "From Queen." What's a Queen? Is that the name of another space program? I give a polite smile and nod. "The band, Queen." The band...? Brian May...? The band, Queen...? Brian May, from the band, Queen...? Wait, Brian May from the band, Queen! Holy crapadoodle! "Uh, hi." Real nice fella. He wrote some music in honor of the event. He also had a book that he put together with 3D images and some special polarized glasses. I couldn't see it. I had to hand him his book and glasses back and tell him that I couldn't see it. I felt like such an ass. I found out later that my eyesight is so poor in one eye that my brain ignores most input from it. It also the same reason that I can't do those magic eye pictures either. It was impossible for me to see it. Still feel like an ass, though.

Freddie did a really beautiful, raw and emotional, acoustic song live, called You Take My Breath Away. Hyde Park. It was a free concert they put on for their London fans and 150,000 people turned up. It’s just Freddie and his piano, and he urges the audience “You have to listen to this one”. By the end of it you could have heard a pin drop.

Let me suggest a few that will captivate you and your soul. Who Wants To Live Forever live at Wembley 1986, Cool Cat official video, Heaven for everyone, Made in Heaven, Save Me Montreal 1881, and my all time favorite White Queen live at Hammersmith. That is just scratching the surface. Freddie will capture your soul. Love the reaction Yes more Queen Please.
