Rant Time! Sandbagging for World Titles

Спорт

Is this a real problem? What does sandbagging look like? Where the fuck have I been? All subjects I maybe talk about in this video.
also I have an Instagram where I post about jiujitsu and animals.

I finished second at Worlds in the absolute masters 1 brown belt division 2021. I didn't start training hard until 3 years ago when I hit 30. I drive 50 minutes each way, 1 hour kickboxing, 1.5 hours bjj and 70 minutes weight lifting/cardio. It's become a second job but it gives my life meaning. I know it's not the same as winning adults but I'm proud of my accomplishments becasue of the added challenges I've had to go through. Its not my age it's my job, responsibilities and family commitments that make it hard to train and compete. Next year I'm going to fight both Masters 1 and adult, screw those young guys. I largely agree about everything although an extra year at blue doesn't seem like a big deal in the long run.

I love your comments on the Masters division. At 32 years old, I just got my purple after training 6 years. As much as I would love to train all day everyday, that’s just not the reality for most. 4 kids under 6 and running a business makes training even 2x week feel like a challenge. While as I progressed through the year I watched less and less as I felt more comfortable with the technique I had, and even more so as I started winning. Great to see you back! Top of the list of people I adore without knowing personally! One thing I wonder about though. If you remove the time requirements, that seems to truly create a sandbagging issue. At the moment, nobody following the time requirements can be accused of sandbagging, but without time requirements it becomes an open question whether any winner "should" have been promoted and competed at a higher belt. And then you risk really devaluating the level and status of the lower belt titles! How about just making an exception for people who have won a world title, or other high-level competitions, such that early promotion is optional for them?

I’m mean in what other sport could a hobbyist win a world championship or be considered elite. I’m a blackbelt and am under no illusions that I would be able to win words at blue belt. I agree most everything you said. It's the time you put in versus what your opponents put in. However, in your comment on the Masters' class, as a man in his mid-forties, an accomplishment there is still nothing to be taken lightly. Is it the same level as the open? No. But you hit a point where you're body can't keep up, no matter what you do (outside of PED's & HRT). I have competition blue, purple, & brown take me to task regularly. There is no ego to defend. They train more than I do. My job at this point, is to give them the best training I can, & help them succeed. If they are successful, then I was successful in my endeavor. That's all I got. Mad respect for you & the boys at PSF. Heal up. Maybe we'll meet one day in the Masters' class.

Maybe I didn't get my point across perfectly. I appreciate the fuck out of older competitors and the calming/mentor affect they have in the gym. I think you should own your accomplishments. I think my main point is reference to masters competitors is that no one sane is comparing them to the adult divisions in terms of sheer skill or competitiveness. That doesn't mean they aren't something to be proud of

@@WiltseBrothers Thank you for taking the time to break it down, and you most likely did communicate that, but as communication goes, sometimes the listening audience focuses on certain things more than others. I've got a lot of thoughts about this. But when it comes to alleged sandbagging, i think it has to be viewed in the context of the room. To take some Daisyfresh examples. In blue belt, you've got people like Tad Cravens, Jordan Butler, Jared Schafer (in his case, there are also age requirements to consider for promotion, I believe), Jacob Bornemann. Absolutely incredible athletes. Young men who would, in most other gyms, absolutely maul everyone in there, including the upper belts, and the instructor! Except they're not in any other gym. They're training in a room where the purple belts are also top tier competitors. Where the brown belts are the likes of like Jorge Valladarez and Jacob Couch. And we don't even need to talk about the resident black belts, who are *checks notes* Andrew Wiltse. Plus Dante Leon and Kendall Reusing stopping by regularly. i.e some of the best grapplers in the entire world! So is it really sandbagging if one room sets substantially higher standards than most of the others?

Its Just Like Boxing and other sports its all about amount of productive time put into training and sparring. That makes the difference.

Awesome video I agree with everything you said , glad you're healing up. Are there any games that help you keep you balanced or does it require the physical aspects of bjj as well?

No. I am an addict. My addiction is immersive video games. I literally will let my life fall apart if I am not careful. For the next... five ish months? Zero video games

You are spot on. I won a master worlds title a couple months after receiving my blue belt. Same yr won pan ams in my division and open class. 2 yrs later still a blue belt competing as purple and brown in other non IBJJF tourneys. Now when I enter an IBJJF tourney I seemed to get DQ’d in the championship matches for very suspect things. No point in trying to smash the blue belt division again. Have moved to EBI tourney rule sets and found a lot of bs has been eliminated. Seems like more competitive grapplers as well.

Good to see you again man. In Dota 2 we call this phenomenon smurfing, intentionally competing against lower level players as a higher level player.

Smurfing in BJJ would be like a brown belt competitor writing in a fake name and competing in a blue belt comp

I don’t agree with everything, but I liked a lot of what you said. More importantly, you got this old washed up black belt hyped for training so thank you!
