@Brad D I liked some of Todd’s music & I did vote for him but I think he should go in as a Producer which he was better at and then they could display his recordings along with his Production credentials . Yes we all know Hall is lacking but it seems they have tidied up a little bit in past five years . People are sick of the expanded definition of Rap as rock but I was getting tired of that mentality of a 30s Gospel Singer farts into a Grammaphone and it is scene as an “ early influence “ With the exception of Dick Dale I do think they have gotten most of the 60s movers and shakers in there .

Depeche Mode: Black Celebration Music For The Masses Violator Song Of Faith and Devotion I will argue with anyone (and you don't have to like DM at all) that this string of albums from 86-93 is as good as any band (don't care about genres) has ever produced. You may hate them (or just be indifferent) but that period of their evolution is jaw dropping. All those albums sound different if you have an ear for music. They influenced everyone in that style from Muse to NIN. No one wrote synth pop music like Martin Gore. Now you may love Kraftwerk and yes they are legendary but they were more (to me) a concept than an actual band that would tour and be exciting to see. DM rocks!

would you include Vince Clark as founding member? like Metallica had bassists Robert Trujillo and Jason Newsted at the ceremony? Speak and Spell was released in my puberty, i was hooked, i saw them in the Metropol in my hometown Berlin (where they produced their 2nd or 3rd album, or both) in an audience of 200 people. It formed my tastes, it brought Human League, Heaven 17 and on a different crossing Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen and Gary Numan with it. But then i lost track, apart from the odd song now on the radio i didn´t feel they mattered anymore (to me), music for the masses. And i don´t want to sound elitist, i enjoy a nice stadium concert, especially if Bruce sings, Steve is on guitar and Nicko drums and some Eddie guy floating about. But Mode is not made for that imo. Deservant of an entry in Hall of Fame? although i liked the pure electronic days of them and seperated when they discovered acoustic instruments (more rock´n´rolly) - yes, Johnny Cash picked up on them, how could i disagree ;)

D T you have no idea what Depeche Mode. They are probably the singlehandedly most influential band when it comes to synth music, and if you forget their albums Songs of Faith and Devotion and Ultra, then you forget the their influence on rock. Depeche Mode deserved to be in the Rock and Role Hall of Fame years ago, I can understand other artists like Whitney Houston and b.i.g but Depeche Mode deserves to be inducted.

DT, look up and watch a Depeche Mode concert. They are in their 50’s and they still put on an incredible rock show. Their song writing is amazing and their songs take you on an emotional journey. They still put out great music and sell out concerts world wide. On they last tour, they sold out the Hollywood Bowl for four nights. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think they are the first musical act to sell out the Bowl that many times.

Steve Seim I think people are missing the origin of how the rock and roll hall of fame came to be. It’s purpose is to recognize ones who contributed to the influence and significance to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll. The first induction in 1986 mainly consisted of r&b singers. That style of music helped to shape and develop rock and roll. Whitney may not be the traditional “rock and roll” artist but she was an r&b singer and it helped shape rock and roll. As far as biggie smalls and rap he definitely lived that rock and roll lifestyle. His music had heavy influence.

I feel like our whole society is just trying to please everyone - all the time - everywhere. I can't say I listen to that much rap but I don't hate it. I don't really see the point in hating music but having a Rock and Hall of Fame and just throwing in who ever and don't include obvious names of the main genre? It feels like any modern action movie where they have a weak story line and just throw in whatever they can think of and hope it turns into a good movie. Seen the last Star Wars movie? Basically just 75 ideas thrown together without much thought. Quick scenes and everything happens instead of something particular and smart. Seems a bit like Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Men, women, old, young and any genre must be included. The actual inpact on rock music doesn't matter as long as anyone can watch the show and feel someone appeals to them. I wonder how much Notorious BIG would have cared about this if he been alive? Probably just laugh it off and be thankful for some extra cash. It might be true that RAP is a much bigger industry than rock now.. But how many rappers look or care about Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Iron Maiden has had an incalculable influence on metal, they still fill arenas and stadiums worldwide, and are similar to Rush with a large and rabid fan base who love complex and thought provoking music. The fact they have not gotten a sniff is all you need to know about the RR (Rolling Stone Magazine) Sham Hall of Shame. I like the way the guys from Rush handled it - they didn't care, but knew many of the fans did and they embraced it. I also love how they wait until people start dying to honor a deserving band. I think about Yes, who was another no-brainer. Of course Chris Squire wasn't there to enjoy the moment.

Eddie Trunk has explained at length just how minuscule the voting actually is. Hundreds of musicians, executives, historians, and esteemed music journalists each have 5 votes to use on the pool of nominees. Winning the fan vote only gets you ONE vote. It doesn't matter how many millions of people voted for a certain act. If you win the fan vote, it online counts as ONE extra vote on your ballot.

I found this info, not sure if this is 100% accurate but makes sense with what you are saying at the end: "The top five vote-getters in the Fan Vote comprise one “fan ballot,” which is counted as just one among a thousand other ballots. Those ballots are filled out by members of the actual voting body, which includes music journalists and other industry insiders, along with every living person who’s been inducted. So, more than 8 million fans cast their votes online under the impression that they’re having their voice heard, but really it’s just for about one-tenth of one percent of the total vote."

Yup. Saw Miles Davis at the Front Row theatre in 1981 and his guitarist-Michael Stern-was ABSOLUTELY a brilliant ROCK guitarist. Of course Davis always surrounded himself with the best musicians. Almost all went on to become legends in their own right. Your analysis is spot on. I loved Miles but he was a JAZZ master! RTHOF is a sham.

Agree! though Dave and Pat were separated by 100 grand not a million votes. As a teen in the 70's I know the impact Benatar had on young women when she hit the scene, and there is not a influential female rock or pop singer today (even some country) who has not said she was one of their inspirations. She changed rock and roll for women. Neil also does not get the respect he deserves as a great rock musician and producer.

Michael B probably because Jett was recording rock long before Benatar. Jett is seen as an iconic game changer being one of the first female guitar players in rock and being in The Runaways. Both should be in for sure. Benatar’s husband Neil Geraldo better be in as well as he is the musician she is the voice.
