I’m gonna be honest, I’ve beaten the game like three times but even now I don’t feel like I know the combat like at all. Sometimes it feels like I just swing wildly and pray. However, I will say that it’s so damn satisfying to discover how to get temporary invincibility against Desann for a few moments of risk free attacks. A heavy style strike in that beautiful moment is just, *chef’s kiss*

If you're looking for other FPS games with awesome levels, I highly recommend Dusk (2018). It's an indie game that largely flew under the radar, and it pays homage to classic shooters like Quake and Blood. When I first picked it up on Steam a few years ago, I didn't expect much from it, but it blew my expectations out of the water. Similar to Doom, Quake, Blood, etc., Dusk is split into multiple episodes (3 in this case), consisting of 11 maps each (including a secret map in each episode). While Doom and Quake tended to front-load a lot of the better maps in the earlier episodes, Dusk bucks the trend by improving with each episode (with the third being one of the best collections of FPS levels I've ever seen). It's graphics are about on par with Quake, but it makes up for it with its inventive level design, rich atmosphere, enemy variety, and fast-paced gameplay. It also removes a lot of the annoyances from older shooters (e.g. you don't take fall damage, you can't drown, none of the enemies are hit-scanners, and you don't have to reload weapons), while creating far more memorable and distinctive levels than Doom and Quake. I'd say that the first half of the game is very good but not exactly genre-defining, while the second half is what truly lifted it into an FPS masterpiece in my eyes. Dusk is a very underrated gem from this last decade and one I highly recommend checking out.

The thing I find confounding about the stealth section is how Raven did it right with the Scavenger Base in Elite Force as being detected before a certain point simply meant Tom Odell dying rather than being found wounded and the section with the Hirogen forced you into combat as, well, it's hard to be stealthy against a hunting species. There were some unique ways to get past areas like tricking a group of Malon into getting zapped in sludge, using a Terran uniform to rescue Telsia, or the fact that the Compression Rifle's sniper shot is silent despite the target emitting *screams of the damned as they disintegrate!*

I remember playing the Alzoc demo mission on PC as a child. I discovered cheat codes and used them to meticulously add reborn, stormtroopers and even Desann himself to spice things up :P

Excellent video, Jack! I've never played Jedi Outcast, but I did watch an LP of it years back. Whose LP? Funnily enough, Lightningboltforever's. I've been a fan of LBF's content for years, and it was awesome to see you mention him here. While I never played Jedi Outcast, I grew up playing Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (1997), and I can't tell you how many times I played through that game as a kid. There was a time -- probably when I was in 4th and 5th grade -- when I played Jedi Knight every day, and it wouldn't surprise me if I beat it upwards of 50 times. It got to the point where I knew the levels like the back of my hand and even ran through the whole game in an hour (literally just running past most of the enemies and taking shortcuts). I also remember messing around with cheat-codes to make myself invincible and gain the ability to fly, exploring out-of-bounds sections of the levels and toying with enemies by using force pull to take away their weapons and watching them run around, helplessly. One of my funniest memories revolved around using both the invincibility and flying cheat codes in tandem. While invincible, Kyle could still take damage by running into walls with force speed or falling off a cliff, but enemy attacks and explosions inflicted no damage. So, in one level that had a wide open, massive area with an Imperial Palace towering above me, I laid my entire supply of sequencer charges on the ground at my feet and then shifted slightly to make them detonate. The massive explosion didn't kill me because of the invincibility cheat-code, but it sent me flying insanely high up in the air. Kyle hit his head on the skybox, and that killed him. Lol. By the way, Bethesda actually wasn't involved with the Doom games until Doom (2016). id Software actually both developed and published the first game, while Doom II was developed by id and published by GT Interactive Software. Anyway, it's cool to see you checking out some of these older games and that you're enjoying them! I look forward to your future uploads!

two things. 1. You can also kill Desann by breaking a pillar and timing it to fall on him (the cut scene sort of implies this is actually how he dies I think but not sure) 2. Desann, once you've turn on the invincibility beam, can ALSO accidentally jump into it and become completely invincible, giving you a bad time and probably an insta-death. Speaking from experience otherwise good stuff Edit: Actually I forgot something. I remember renting the game for gamecube when i was younger and every time i got to where I killed fyair and the gravity get messed up. I actually thought my game was bugged/broken and I couldn't progress, so I just level skipped it past that

Also the AT STs can be killed if you use Force push with the right timing to push them back and deal damage. I think you can use the Electric Pulse gun too but I can’t remember exactly. Unless you meant in the Topside level specifically, in which case yes that one is essentially invincible.

I never knew you could get invincibility from that beam lol. I'm pretty sure I always avoided it because I thought it would be an instakill.

So small correction (over a year later) you can kill the ATST in the endgame with electricity so using either the Demp 2 or force lightning can take them out.

In regards to the fuel pump puzzle, the solution is actually able to be found, but I can understand not spotting it. In the hangar, two cables are attached to Lando's ship. Each cable is attached to a fuel pump. These two pumps each have a symbol on them. Those two symbols are the solution.

I am glad I grew up on these games, and I have to say that I largely agree with your ranking. It's pretty in-depth, and well-reasoned to be sure. I love Dark Forces II and Jedi Academy more, but this is certainly a worthy addition to the series. Kyle Katarn is also one of my favorite Star Wars characters, due to his maverick streak and interesting philosophy on the Force. Also, he's just a badass. As for the people who call Legends the inferior canon and champion Disney's bastardization, there is a word that describes those people . . . "tasteless". For a lot of the early EU's faults (by that I mean from the 80s to the early 90s), the rest more than makes up for it. The only good things Disney has put out are the Darth Vader comics, the seventh season of "Clone Wars" (which Filoni was responsible for in the first place), and the Mandalorian. It doesn't even compare in quality. Plus, as you mentioned, Legends "feels" like Star Wars more than the alternative. Mainly because, unlike the lifeless and soulless cash grab, it had heart and passion behind it. Except for Karen Traviss . . . we don't . . . we don't talk about her.

I never had much trouble with the ATSTs or Shadow Troopers, but they're also not much fun. The snipers are pretty frustrating though and the Tavion fight is horrible. The first Yavin mission is definitely the worst for me (so boring), and I'm not fan of the final level either. Besbin is probably my favorite.
