The doll is elegant, Melina is mysterious, and Sophia from Lies of P is cute, but ain't nobody gonna beat good old BEARER, SEEK, SEEK, LEST.

Hyetta actually also becomes a finger maiden at the end of her questline. She is actually the only true finger maiden in Elden Ring! I'd rank her quite highly as her quest is really interesting and reveals a lot of lore

Honorable mention to Sophia, the blue fairyn't that has quite more interesting backstory and more interactions than the maidens in DS1

Gotta say, I absolutely love the 'Level Up Girl' motif in Fromsoftware's games. There's just something comforting and satisfying about visiting a friendly NPC to improve your strength after a tough fight or a long trek.

seeing ds3 firekeeper at 7 (last when only taking into account the ‘main’ maidens) from a channels who content I very much enjoy is the biggest betrayal I have ever suffered in my life and you will be hearing from my lawyer for emotional damages

I really love the DS3 Firekeeper's design, and I love her choice to betray the fire. But I feel like Melina just wins this competition for me really. Especially given how she's a traveller, and has a lot more agency in the story :)

DS3 Firekeeper for me. What can I say? Girls who are into blindfolds are probably into some other freaky stuff, too. Like maybe role playing or snuffing out the source of all light and time.

Maiden in Black was so good they made a Maiden in Black 2 (DS3 Fire Keeper)

I personally find the doll to be my favorite for how kind she is and for her overall story. In the depressing and morbid world of Bloodborne, she’s a much needed light. There’s also how she reminds me of Maria, who I am scaroused by, except less stabby which is welcomed.

My favourite maiden is the fire keeper from ds3 not just because she has one of the most beautiful armour designs in the souls franchise but because she want to end the age of fire saving any would be fire keepers/ humanity from an existence of never dying . Plus she has this gothic trap thing that makes her my wifu of choice.

The way I literally disclaimered that I know it's not Soulsborne, but I wanted to include it anyway so I could chat about a FromSoft game I really enjoyed, and y'all still find ways to be pedantic about it.

My list would be: 11 Anastasia. No dialogue and the only thing interesting is that she can get killed. 10 Daughter of chaos. No dialogue, but cool design and covenant. 9 DS3 fire keeper. The bad twist on the end of fire ending is cool, but she doesn't have much besides that. 8 The doll. Kinda boring and very little dialogue or personality, but with a cool backstory and some nice interactions. 7 Darkmoon Knightess. Can and will fight you if you mess up. Love that. 6 Irina. Not much in the way of personality, but very nice questline. 5 Maiden in Black. She's cool. Like really cool. 4 Emerald Herald. Mysterious and found in a lot of places with interesting dialogue about the world of DS2 3 Melina. Many interactions and mysteries. Her cutscene after the frenzied flame ending was amazing as well. 2 Sophia. Very good questline and story. Need I say more. 1 Emma. She becomes a full fledged boss and shares an attack that is otherwise only used by Inner Isshin. She's amazing.

For me, the reason why the Doll is one of my least favorites (still good, tho) is similar to why you ranked the DS3 Firekeeper rather low. She only has unique dialogue in the first third of the game, except for the post-Maria and Orphan bits. She doesn't feel integral to the story outside of levelling you up, and any narrative value is found in her background and not the present events. Even her reacting to your gestures isn't unique as the Firekeeper also has this feature. The Firekeeper, on the other hand, while being there mostly to level you up, has both narrative weight in DS3's wider worldbuilding as well as in the ongoing plot, if you choose the End of Fire (my favorite Soulsborne ending, which I also consider the most canonical in DS3). This also changes the music in Firelink Shrine, signifying her deep connection to the location. As already mentioned, she also reacts to your gestures, and her visual design is one of the best. Ultimately, as End of Fire is both about letting go and having the ability to make your own choices, I do think her agreeing to bring an end to the Age of Fire showcases her will, even if in a more understated manner. The problem mostly stems from the fact that our own character can't really talk back, leaving the onus of expressing such an idea on her alone while still conforming to Fromsoft's more minimalistic dialogue style. That said, she isn't my favorite either, because Emma, Ayre, and Melina still exist.

Sophia from Lies of P would be right up there with Doll and Melina for me.

The ‘maidens’ in these games actually make me a tad uncomfortable, not in a scary way, but in that they set off some alarm bells in my head for the vague presence of sexism-adjacent iffiness. They consistently come across as ‘wiafu bait’ for want of a better phrase. I can feel the devs’ strategic and unfair catering to the straight male demographic that’s most statistically likely to be playing, and it takes me right out of the experience.

@@BillySYT she's just the best. It's hard to explain. It's just the small things, like her reacting to your gestures, bowing back when you bow, her calming voice. Plus the line in the "end the age of fire" ending where she goes "ashen one, hearest thou my voice, still?" Is one of the best moments in the game. That ending hits especially hard when you realize that for the first time, You truly understand the firekeeper. She has lived her life in darkness and now you along with everyone else will too. What's more, she always sides with you. She will be loyal no matter what. Others like Emma and Melina will turn against you the moment you don't play by their rules. A souls maiden is supposed to feel like home. Like a safe place from all the things trying to kill you. That is exactly what the ds3 firekeeper is. Best souls maiden forever!

I never really felt attached or connected to the Fromsoft maidens, but when I played lies of P, then I thought Sofia was a step up, but I didn't realise that I actually cared about her until I came back to the attacked hotel, to find her missing, and realize she's been basically being tortured in Arche Abby.

I really wish Melina would appear when you leveled up all the way until Farum Azula.

This is emerald herald slander. Granted I haven't played AC6. Or Sekiro. Or enough of Elden Ring. But shut up >:(

People hate on melina soo much

I sadly have to agree on the firekeeper from ds3. She feels to me like a character that exist out of stubborn but uninspired adherence to a trope. Most of the other maiden have some kind of story to them, some original idea to their themes and presentation, but the firekeeper just feel like she was cobbled up from memorable parts of older maiden without an identity of her own.

I think Maiden in Black is too low. But I still think this is a very respectable list so good job!

I have such a connection to the level up ladies in fromsoft games, they are just so likable. Still Solaire is still the superior maiden.

Okay I actually finished now! I've yet to beat Fires of Rubicon so I skipped that part but I more or less agreed with everything! I'd also put The Doll at #1 but Melina absolutely gives her a run for her money. I think what puts The Doll over the edge for me is just the delivery of the voice acting. I'm not sure if it's as excellent in other languages but her English voice acting by Evetta Muradasilova is just so good. Also the same voice actor as The Maiden in Black! I think Melina slightly beats out The Doll just in terms of story relevance and her impact on the world but The Doll still just feels like someone very special.

My favorite Maiden is the firekeeper from Dark Souls 3. I will agree with you that she is on the dull side, but what draws my attention to her specifically is that every time I played all the souls born games. I always like to Bow as a thanks for their services she was the only one besides the doll that actually about in return which was the only time I actually stared at her and shocked that she actually interacted with me like that. I was so used to being ignored by the other maidens when I bowed to them for my thanks that she was the only one who returned the gesture. The gothic look was a plus to me, and I enjoy when a game gives a character some of their own gestures whenever you use your own. I always liked it when a character would interact with you besides dialogue. I just wish they gave the FireKeepers more personality so that she could be perfect. Other than that, that's why I love the FireKeepers from DS3. I usually lump in the doll with her because she also does the exact same thing, but with an actual personality that I enjoy.

Whenever I play Elden ring I always go frenzied flame because A it’s cool and B so Melina won’t die, but that price is torrent 😢😢

For me she is just bland and doesn’t do much. ER and DS3 maidens are top notch. Her voice is soothing for the theme so that works I guess.

Dark souls traumatized me when it comes to NPCs, especially the fire keepers. I once accidentally hit the firekeeper in DS2 and DS3 and completely panicked. I thought my playthrough is literally over because that’s how it is in Dark Souls. Thankfully they made them revive in the later games. Although I kinda miss the realism behind that and how careful you have to be around NPCs like they’re real human beings.

Doll is my favourite I would swap Firekeeper with Melina. She feels forgettable(maybe intentionally…) 1.Doll 2.Emma 3.Ayre 4.Maiden in Black 5.Firekeeper Well…traditional storytelling wins for me(but Doll is an exception)

Going to have to agree with you on the firekeeper. While the Doll’s stiltedness plays into the horror of her conception, being created to be little more than a fetishised version of someone Gehrman cared about, the Firekeeper is just dull for me. Great design but I really wouldn’t mind just being able to level up at a bonfire like in Dark Souls and Elden Ring. This also goes for the Herald. She was pretty boring too. Personally my favourite was Emma. Agency, she has her own plans, specifically on curing dragonrot. She also feels like she has her own personality, especially from the conversations after you give her a drink, and of course there is the fun boss fight.

Yes, however, DS3 firekeeper can spin so shes automatically top 3.

@BillySYT You and I have different criteria for what makes a good fire keeper, which I respect. DS3 was my first Souls game and I haven't played BB or DeS, so I'm sure that's got a lot to do with it. I'm actually a fan of the simplicity of this character, and how it ties her into the world of Ds3. While other Maidens may have their own secret agendas or motivations, I'm drawn to Ds3 Firekeeper's consistency. Much like the shrine itself, she embodies safety and comfort as I return again and again from facing the horrors of the transitory lands. It feels like she exists specifically to aid the player and will be there for them no matter what they do, ride or die. Accidentally tapped r1 and chopped her head off? No sweat. Helped cure her vision impairment and asked her to commit blasphemy? She's right there with you. I appreciate how integral she is to the story from beginning to end, including having her own ending. Plus, I feel solidarity with the character. As my guy Ludleth explains, she is tied to the shrine, bound to this cycle of death and rebirth just as the main character is, and I begin to feel some pity for her as I return for the nth NG cycle. Also, I love the voice acting for the character. The lines you trigger when bringing her some special items (Ashen One, are these... are these eyes?) excellently commicate subtle complexities in a seemingly one-dimensional character. Not to mentioned I loved discovering I could emote with her. While she is certainly not the most flushed out or characterized of the Fromsoft Maidens, I think her simplicity and consistency is perfect for her role as the Ashen One's Fire Keeper. Maybe all this just means I'm lacking consistency from women in my life, but hey, I play Dark Souls to escape real life and you're not my therapist. Love the video as always, and the discourse. Keep it up :)
