Ranking the Breath of Fire series [Breath of Fire I, II, III, IV, V DQ, VI]

Ойындар

Last year, I went on a Breath of Fire binge, where I played through , reviewed and created other content for all of the games in the series. There are some seriously amazing titles in this series, so it doesn’t come to any surprise as to why Breath of Fire is so adored by JRPG fans across the globe. Unfortunately, the series has been dead for nearly two decades (unless you count Breath of Fire 6)
This video will act as a countdown, looking at how I personally rank each of the games in series. This is just my opinion, and it may be different to yours, so don’t be upset if I don’t but Breath of Fire 6 as number 1.
If you like this video, it would help out a lot if you hit like and subed, for more RPG content. Also, be sure check out my other videos on the Breath of fire series, such as Know the Facts!
I’m also interested to see how you rank the titles that you’ve played, so let me know in the comments.
Come say hi on the Socials!

II Breath of Fire 2

IV Breath of Fire 4

Another great ranking of a beloved jrpg series. It's always going to come down to breath of fire III or breath of fire IV when it comes to the absolute best of the series but it really goes to show you that the ps1 really knew what it was doing when it came to making great timeless jrpg's. Personally I've only ever completed breath of fire I and breath of fire III but when I get more free time in my life I would eventually love to give the other entries a try because it seems like I have a lot of great things to look forward to.

Wow, its interesting that you also see the 4th one as First place, its the same for me. Although i love both 3 and 4, but the 4th has so much extra charm for me that i decided to have it the first place, especially because the Fou-Lu parts and the music of the game, also the combo and teacher system, love the fairy village more in the 4th. The Fou-lu parts also did remind me on Inuyasha back in the times i used to watch a lot of that anime, and inuyashas brother kind of reminding me of Ryu´s other half. Also 5th one was the worst for me(a i didnt play the other ones) it just felt wrong to be game over if one is tranformed into dragon, that was what had make the series so great in the first place(especially as you mentioned in the 3rd one). The 5th one felt like Capcom made it, just to show us the series died with it(would explain the dragon counter...)

I tried 1 and 2 on the switch when they added them to the online subscription. 1's menus were also SO hard to parse, they had so few characters (as in letters) per item that I often had no idea what item name they were actually trying to say. And yeah, the encounter rate was just insane, and a few difficulty spikes really reminded me how brutal the genre was back then. When that Lich((?) abducted Nina, saving her alone was one of the hardest gaming moments I've had in awhile.

My grandma used to get me 25$ giftcard to Walmart or Target and I'd get to choose a cheap PS2 game each year on my birthday and the cover for this game sold me on it. Just over 13 years later am I just aiming to beat it and don't mind restarting with my old stats and gear because it's pretty much impossible to beat it on your first run no matter what with how the Dragon Bosses have their 600dmg shields and all. BoF3 was one of the first games I got for the playstation as a kid and I adored it. Compared to RPGs I'd played on earlier systems it was just so huge and looked amazing, with a clear evolution of the familiar pixel style of older games, mixed with elements of newer hardware with the backgrounds etc. It didn't try to go full polygon like a lot of other games on the system, which looked quite goofy at the time (stuff like FF7 and Wild Arms during battles. They're both amazing games too, but definitely haven't aged as well graphically). The story was so well told and watching the characters grow and change through the story just added so much depth. I pre-ordered BoF4 (something I only did one other time with Pokemon Yellow) as I knew it would be a must play and I wasn't disappointed. The art direction in that game is superb, and the new direction they took with the story so you spend time with the antagonist and grow to understand his motives is just something I've never seen before or since. It also has one of the most emotionally bleak scenes I've ever experienced in a video game that really hit me hard. Don't want to spoil anything but I'm sure if you've played it you know what I'm talking about. Overall, BoF3 clutches the win for me. It was more upbeat in general, more light-hearted, comedic and colourful. More of a story of camaraderie and characters growing together, where BoF4 was more about people thrown together and having to learn to understand each other. The music in 3 was also more jazzy and fun, although there's one boss theme from BoF4 that's on my general music playlist it's that good. Overall, I find BoF4 a bit more "muted" in general. I also appreciate the overworld in BoF3, where BoF4 was moving between points on a map. Ershin is also pretty annoying lol. Also, Dragon Quarter was an amazing game. It was again such an original idea that I haven't seen replicated since, it just didn't really feel like a breath of fire game. As a departure from the main series, it would've worked just fine, but it's a shame it was the last game we got (not counting 6 because I've never had a way to play it and it doesn't sound like it's worth playing anyway).

I had played II and III and loved III, but V just seemed to break ground in ways I had never seen before and changed my expectations for story telling. I learned to use strategy first and reserve the dragon transformation to eek out a little longer in the story and return stronger in the next play through. I loved the ants, not sure why - and at one point I broke the ant stock market and couldn't get rid of money fast enough. I absolutely loved the game and the whole concept. It's a pretty hardcore game to get into and the first few hours, it's very likely to get our asses served on a plate. However, once you surpass the first few obstacles, the game gets so good. I fell in love with the gameplay and depth of the combat system, loved every single character and the weird aesthetics of the BoF V world. I remember my shock once I found out what was the deal with Nina's wings. Also, this is my favourite incarnation of Ryu, I guess it helps that he's actually talking in this game but goddamn he just made me feel so many emotions by the end of the game. While it has the ideas that make a good RPG, they just weren't implimented well and the Woolsey translation didn't age well at all. 4) Dragon Quarter- DQ is a great game so long as you accept that it is not a Breath of Fire game, and while the SOL and Dragon Transformation system is odd, I love how the game actually impliments a system where you have unlimited power, but it truly has a cost. In a lot of ways, DQ was just way too ahead of it's time and if it was released today would be seen more favorably (just not as a BoF game). 3) Breath of Fire IV- This is a master class RPG, but it is held back by a few odd choices. The Dragon Transformation system feels way too limited and having Ryu only turn into the same hybrid form for his transformation no matter what dragon you choose feels lacking and the odd 3D models for bosses and dragons feels out of place when compared to the beautifully crafted sprite work. Honestly, that felt like Capcom was trying to copy a bit too much from Final Fantasy rather than just let BoF be it's own thing. However, the story is still top notch, despite some odd localization choices and cut content. 2) Breath of Fire II- Yes, the localization is terrible, but it is a testiment to how good the story is that it is able to shine inspite of that. The world feels massive, the characters feel real, and the sense of dread that permiates throughout the game as you slowly uncover a dark and demonic plot hidden behind the facade of a messianic religion is just beautifully done. And the fact that this is only Capcom's second attempt at an RPG speaks volumes of the talent that the studio once held. It is for this reason that BoFII is one of my favorite RPGs for the SNES (only beaten out by Final Fantasy VI). 1) Breath of Fire III- What more needs to be said about this game. It is the very definition of a Masterpiece. Memorable music. Lovable characters. And a truly one of a kind story that goes beyond just venturing forth to save the world. Add to that the deeply rewarding Master System, and the insanely deep Dragon Gene system and you have one of the very best RPGs ever made.

I think the reason why a lot of people hate 5, me included, is because the EU version screwed over it´s players and removed a bunch of options such as the ability to go back to a previous save point while keeping progress or the ability to restart the game while keeping progress. We do not know why they made that change but it made the game x10 times harder and unenjoyable than the US version and i think it´s what cemented it as the worst game for most of us who played in the EU regions. I used to hate it to death and when i played the US version via emulators i found it a lot more passable. Also, let´s face it, the extremely ugly graphics did not do it any favors.

The choice between 3 and 4 is intensely hard, but I have to go with 3. The combat was a little bit more enjoyable and there was a more grand sense of adventure and discovery. 4 was set in an existing, fully explored world where 3 took you across uncrossable oceans and deserts. DQ was underrated, I can see how the shift was jarring and it does have some issues. It was fun and captured the calm dystopian vibe excellently and I really enjoyed the pressure the D-counter applied.

I came on here for the nostalgia. The only series I played was BOF4 and I'm glad I did, the others visually just didn't seem enticing enough to play. Thanks for ranking it #1. If only CAPCOM continued off the series branching from story and improved animations of BOF4, I'm sure the series would have been successful. BOF4 had the best rating of the previous 3 when it came out. Really unfortunate how the series turned out.

4 was a giant step back from 3.... Sadly it only went down from there. I'd rank them 6, 5, 1, 2, 4, and 3 being the best. 5 could have been a good game with a different name but felt he looked more like a demon than a dragon, Also wasn't really a fan of the soul system and how it encouraged you to restart multiple times to get more of the story. Though what really killed 5 for me was turning Nina into a flipping air filter! fun combat system however, nothing compared to the gene system of 3 which is my favorite system from any game ever.

I love the breath of fire series and I gotta say my number 1 would be BOF 3 due to the gene splicing then 2 because I grew up playing it and renting it then BOF 4 the combat system was crazy fun! I also dunno if anyone said this but Ryu in BOF 2 is only a half a dragon clan member thus can only hold on to the form for a attack and not a transformation, the story is amazing when two NPC die in the game I still cant help but feel more from the story than what I get from most of the games made today. Number 3 is my top 1 only due to the transformations. Then out of all the party members in all games the side characters I loved the most was Rei & Katt I loved as party members they have super strong attack late game. I never did play BOF 6.

*Breath of Fire IV totally have my favorite plot*, and the song you used in your intro is my favorite one, the last match is so epic, I could totally see it as an anime. *Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter is my favorite game of the franchise*, the new "hard mode" stuff sure ruined a lot of that game for me. (*I cleared the game in a single run*, that probably made the game more annoying for me, *I used to grind in the others a lot, but I couldn't here*), it got harder at the end since my D-Counter was around 90%, I repeated the fight against Dragon Bostch a lot to keep the number low (and I tought it was the last battle), when I saw the other dude oh boy, I had to repeated that battle like 3 or 5 times to clear it without hitting 100%. if it was a regular BoF, it would feel really good to get there, but here it was so painfull, it wasn't fun... When I saw the last scenes I should be like "Wow, this is so cool and great" but I was more concermed about "Dammit, my D-Counter is so high, I hope I don't have to play another Dungeon" -*Firstly, the D-Counter*: fine, *I never used the Dragon Form in regular stages, only in few boss battles that I couldn't win otherwise*, which was nice, *I never used the dragon run on purpose* (sometimes I pressed the button by accident, but for less than a second), with those two it would be good, but *the game constantly rushes you by raising the D-Counter even if you are just standing there*, making exploration more painfull. -*Secondly, the awfull save system*: This was so annoying, they added this to make it "harder" *but living in a place with unnoticed blackouts was a nightmare*, I never knew when I would lose hours of the game, so it wasn't only the D-Counter, this also made the game stressfull. -*Lastly, the equipment*: In other releases it was easy to get the best stuff, they were simple, kinda like Zelda, you usually find/buy new weapons and are usually better/expensive than the previous ones (You know you have the best once you hit Dragon set?) but here you had to mess up a lot with the shops, looking at skills and thinking about the best combo, which may sound good, but with the rush and stress by the earliest two things, is just annoying. You clearly need to look for perfect stuff (but again, probably it was only me that I wanted to clear the game in the first run) I think I cleared that game twice, *the second one was so refreshing, everything was "easier" *since it was a New Game+ and I already knew the best of the best (I think I had a bunch of Exp saved so I leveled up a lot?) which brings another issue, the New Game+ content exclusive, SOL Sequences? some extra scenes that you can see based on your D-Ratio? Not sure if you need to replay it more, but I feel some doors were still looked, which was annoying, for me endgame is more fun than New Game+, maybe for an action like game like Kingdom Hearts, I would totally love a New Game+, but for turn based? not really.

6 - BoF 6 as I've never played it it's definitely my bottom 5 - BoF 5 as while I don't hate on this as much as most I still had to use cheats to fully enjoy it, I understand the idea behind Ryu not being a true Brood an the dragon powers being dangerous for him. 4 - BoF 2 as while it's amazing as far as the world building mechanics an more buffs to every other party member I feel as if Ryu takes a backseat later on in the game an dragons as a whole for that matter 3 - BoF 4 while I love this game with more playthroughs the first time was kinda disappointing, I remember trying to find this game for a long time back when it came out an it was just so different from the rest an the 3D was more abundant an less polished so my first time wasn't the best, an Clay couldn't hulk out which was also disappointing. Now I looking back I honestly had a hard time placing it this low as I've come to love this one a lot 2 - BoF 1 I really love this entry an it wasn't my first game but the last. I had so much fun even with it being a snes title. The dragon system is basic but still powerful and Kain's fusion was good too. The lore an the fight with Tyr was awesome, I just really loved this one 1 - BoF 3 My bias is showing here as this was my first entry an my first RPG I ever played an omg this game was awesome.
