Game Over Hell - Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster review

Ойындар

An entry that is a lot more important to the series than people realise.

I played this many times on the SNES (known as Final Fantasy 2 in the US). It was one of my favorite games of the time. A lot of the tropes may be cliche by today's standards, but this game was quite revolutionary for the time.

It was a bit shocking seeing how curt the dialogue is by today's standards but it helped a lot jumping from III to IV to see how much the narrative style evolved a lot.

@@gameoverhell6952 Well you have to remember that the NES and SNES eras had atrocious translations as shown by the "all your base are belong to us" meme. The version you played, I'm sure, had updated and improved dialogue compared to the original game as well. I mean playing it back then the dialogue was awesome. It's not like Link to the Past or Super Mario World had better dialogue.

Those of us who grew up during the heyday of NES/SNES-era Final Fantasy appreciated FFIV as one of the greatest RPGs of its time. RPG fans like me, who rented (we couldn't afford to buy) games like Paladin's Quest, The 7th Saga, Breath of Fire, Earthbound, and other games usually took it a step further when it came to Final Fantasy. After all, the first game introduced many of us to the genre. I'd played Hydlide and some other games, but Final Fantasy offered character immersion (we got to select and name our characters!) unlike anything we'd previously seen. Final Fantasy IV marked a vast improvement in graphics, storyline, character arcs, and more. We didn't get to select our characters' classes, but something as simple as giving them names made us feel closer to them. For me, it was always my school friends and (occasionally) pets who would undertake adventures. Of course, FFVI made FFIV look like a fairly simple game, much like IV had made the original. Unbeknownst to us, there were another FFII and FFIII, along with an FFV, which served as steppingstones to the two SNES games we got stateside. I haven't played FFV for a while and will start the Pixel Remaster version soon. After buying the Steam package, I'm at the end game of FFI and FFIV, about 1/4 of the way through FFVI, and have a couple of hours in FFII. I will say that the Boost feature on the PM versions is nice. I've been grinding away since 1990 across various versions of the games, so having the ability to level up and collect gil just a bit faster is welcome.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! NES is before my time but I played quite a few SNES RPGs myself. I'll be uploading my V Pixel Remaster impressions soon by the way.

Imo the way to play these is on the switch portable. You have to remember, pixel games back in the day...back when I was a kid... were not played on big 55"-75" TVs that everyone has today. A huge CRT was 32" and most people had 24-27" TVs back then. Mine was 27" and it was on the bigger side. Stretched pixels just dont look very good. These remasters make them playable on big screens but its still a pixel game. A handheld condenses the size down to something that looks much closer to OG playability. I bought the physical for Switch and its awesome. Also, I can hook my switch up to my 27" monitor instead of my 65" living room TV and it looks much better there also

wow, this was one of your best reviews so far. the pacing, the clear voice-over and the script, didn't feel like more than 20 minutes at all. i've been a final fantasy player since my childhood, but never really gave a serious thought about the atb system, now i might finally try it how it was supposed to be. also never thought much about it, but final fantasy iv is probably the hardest of the series (even if the series is not really difficult overall). last time i tried replaying this title was through the nds remake, but i couldn't stand the UGLY models and graphics and that cringeworthy voice acting, just dropped it. this one's gotta be played the classic way.

Different eras. I want to agree with you, as I grew up with the original North American trilogy. Final Fantasy was a classic, albeit short and a bit flawed in hindsight. Final Fantasy II (IV) was an epic quest that shows its age nowadays. Final Fantasy III (VI) has been hands-down the best RPG for 30 years now, in my subjective opinion. FFVII marks the end of an era. I suppose you could say the same for FFIV, as it moved away from the much simpler graphics and stories of the actual original trilogy. I haven't played FFXI (if that even counts, being an MMO), not have I played anything past XII, but up to that point, at least, each iteration (8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit, 128-bit) has its own feel and flow. FFIII looks and plays much better than FFI, FFIV pales in comparison with FFVI, FFIX makes FFVII look like a prototype (graphics-wise), etc.
