As other might have mentioned, Hearts in Atlantis is also a novella/short story collection.

Hearts in Atlantis from 1999 s my favorite Stephen King collection by far. It contains 2 novellas and 3 short stories that are all connected. I like it because of the brilliant way the stories weave together and also are related to the Dark Tower series. It's a great read.

In ‘Nightmares and Dreamscapes’, the one stood out for me was Dolan’s Cadillac. I did like ‘Suffer The Little Children’, and the screenplay, ‘Sorry, Right Number,’ but that was it.

Been reading Nightmares and Dreamscapes for a year now. Most stories are a miss and im only 400 pages in. Every time I try to go back to it, I think of all the disappointing stories I read and do I want more of that? So hard to get back into it!

It’s definitely my least favorite collection. There’s a few I enjoy, but it’s just not very consistent like Night Shift or skeleton crew

Nice video and nice taste! I love watching these "ranking" or "top" videos. My favourite Novella is Apt Pupil, or The Body. Everything from Different Seasons is soo good. My favourite short story is Quitters Inc., and there is a lot of good stories in Night Shift.

I’m trying to get started with King, as I am a big horror fan and also a big reader but haven’t read anything from him. I’m trying to figure out which short story collection to start with since his books can be long winded and I want to get familiar with his style.

Shameless plug! I have two videos on my channel. The BEST and WORST places to start with King. Those should hopefully help you out. I will say Night Shift is his best short story collection IMO, and different seasons is his best novella collection.

In If it Bleeds, I really love The Life of Chuck and Rat. The latter reminded me of a story he might have published in the 70s. The former is just an awesome idea told in several parts. The Breathing Method is also my favourite from Different Seasons. Four Past Midnight is probably my least favourite collection, although I did enjoy, at the time anyway, The Library Policeman and Secret Window... though I've never gone back to them. Hunt around on the Internet and you'll find some stories uncollected you can read for free: The Music Room, On Slide Inn Road, The Fifth Step and Laurie. You should reread some of Everything's Eventual again. The Man in the Black Suit is about a boy who meets the devil while fishing. All That You Love Will Be Carried Away is about a travelling salesman who considers committing suicide. Lunch at the Gotham Cafe is about a couple going through a divorce when their meeting with the lawyer is violently interrupted. LT's Theory of Pets is a humourous story about a couple who buys each other pets and quickly realizes it was a bad idea. The Road Virus Heads North is a bizarre story about a guy who buys a painting at a sale and how it begins to follow him. Lastly, Fair Extension from Full Dark, No Stars is a superb short story, and wickedly witty.

I love some of the stories in N&D. Sure, he could've cut the essay and the teleplay. And a couple of the stories I'm not a huge fan of. But, My Pretty Pony, Rainy Season, The Night Flier, Popsy, The House on Maple Street, Crouch End, It Grows on You, Home Delivery, The Fifth Quarter, The Moving Finger, and The Ten O'Clock People are. all fabulous and add diversity to his canon.

@@BookishDrummer I just finished the long walk from the Bachman books I also read all the shorts from four past midnight except for Sun dog. I'm currently reading The Running Man, and then I'll probably read road work I just was really intrigued by the plot of Running Man. This year I bought all but 10 books I think two are shorts or Novella collections since I don't have skeleton crew or if it bleeds which I really want I thought I had got it but apparently I don't, I think from your recommendations I'll read just after sunset after I finish everything's eventual because I always enjoyed 1408 but I only watched the movie so I'm thinking of reading that short first. Have you read all of his books if not how many have you.

So it’s a weird condition near my wrist, it’s got a long name that I can’t possibly spell, but basically it’s a benign mass of calcium ions. It doesn’t hurt at all. It’s not a tumor, it’s not a cyst, it’s not cancer. It’s funny because people either notice it right away, or they won’t notice it for a long time. I could probably have it removed but I’m sure it would be expensive and it’s not life threatening or anything I’ve had it basically all my life.

So I have only read Night Shift out of his short story collections and I wasn’t much of a fan. I’ll have to read another short story collection to figure this out, but I’m either not a fan of short stories in general, or Night Shift just wasn’t very good. I thought they were all just kinda meh aside from Children of the Corn and Graveyard Shift. Quitters Inc was good too but, ehh…

  • @BookishDrummer

That’s interesting, night shift is widely regarded as his best short story collection. I would highly recommend one of his newer ones, Just After Sunset, that one has an interesting variety of stories and genres. If you don’t like any of those, you probably won’t vibe with his short stories in general, which is perfectly fine

@@BookishDrummer Yeah I'm about to start reading Skeleton Crew. I don't own Just After Sunset (currently) but I'm excited to try some more short stories. I was quite surprised because I do hear a lot of people talk about how good Night Shift is, but if I'm being perfectly honest, as a King fan, or a horror fan in general, there is always going to be one really well regarded book or movie that you won't like. For example, I'm not a big fan of Night Shift and everyone seems to love it, whereas you're not a big fan of The Stand and everyone seems to love that too.

That one is tricky lol I think technically it’s a novel, because all of the stories do connect with each other by the end. But I’ve always heard to described as a mosaic novel. But for me, I love the two beginning novellas, but I’m not as big a fan of the three concluding short stories
