Stephen King's novellas *ranked* a SPOILER-FREE countdown of all his short novels
It's time for this month's book special, and my first RANKING episode in a while :-)
This video is all about Stephen King's novellas - an art form of which he is a master. I looked up all of the stories listed as a novella on King's official website, which gave me a list of 24 tales. I've then gone through my personal ranking of those stories - do bear that in mind, this is my subjective list, not an attempt to be definitive.
Don't worry, this one is spoiler-free too, so everyone is welcome! And don't forget to let me know your favourite novellas in the comments!

@@DaveReadsKing also did you pick 19 as the number for your reasons because it's an important number in Stephen King's books
I just finished The Langoliers and I loved it! Have a feeling going to love whole collection in Four Past Midnight. My first King Short Story collection…I need them all!! Lol

Apt pupil is superb. Very dark but utterly gripping.

Nice! Although not a novella according to King’s website! 🤷🏻♂️ even though it clearly is!
The Breathing Method is a criminally underrated novella in my opinion. I never understood how this book would get so much hate. I actually liked it the most in Different Seasons. And obviously we do know good how the first 3 novellas are.
@DaveReadsKing

I agree, and depending on what mood I’m in that one often sits third or second in my Different Seasons ranking - such a stellar book!
Did the official website completely forget that Full Dark No Stars existed? 🤔 well, Okay, then 😂 great list of course

Ha! It has all four of those ones listed as short stories not novellas, which is wild!
Elevation was a nice read

Indeed - very uplifting (pun intended)!
It’s hard to beat The Body. I’ve been begging them to put it in the Creative Writing reading curriculum at my university for 2 years with no avail.

@@DaveReadsKing They’d rather push the same tired short fiction that hasn’t inspired a single student in over ten years. With The Body, I was told it wasn’t appropriate because the kids cuss too much. They’re twelve year old boys. They should have a vocabulary that would make any priest drop his Bible
@DaveReadsKing

Exactly! That sounds so frustrating - The Body is arguably the best coming of age story ever put to paper

Just a perfect story!
Have you done anything on the collection "Stephen King Goes to the Movies?" It's a reprint anthology of King stories that were made into movies with King's intros and comments about how he thought the movie versions of the stories worked.

I know it well - I’ve got two copies on my shelf! I’ve not done an episode on it, but I am using it when I get to movies covered in that book…I read from King’s but about Children of the Corn on my episode, and I think I’ve referenced his top 10 from that book too 👍

@@DaveReadsKing Half the fun is reading his introductions, especially that "Children of the Corn" has probably inspired the most bad movies!

Ok, so here is my top 10 with a couple of caveats first - I've not read all of his novellas (shamefully still haven't read The Body yet, but I've seen the film a few times) and also I'm including the stories in Full Dark, No Stars. It's my favourite collection, so to hell with the official website!! Anyway, here goes... 1. The Mist 2. 1922 3. The Langoliers 4. Apt Pupil 5. A Good Marriage 6. If it Bleeds 7. The Library Policeman 8. Big Driver 9. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption 10. Dolan's Cadillac (I consider this a novella, and it's my list, ner ner) I haven't read any of Hearts in Atlantis yet, it's never appealed to me, but I'm sure I'll get around to it. And Life of Chuck is the only one from If It Bleeds I've not read, bizarrely. Anyway, I plan to read that once I'm finished Revival.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing!
Interesting Ranking ... 1. The Body 2. The Mist 3. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption 4. Low Men in Yellow Coats 5. Breathing Method 6. Apt Pupil 7. 1922 8. Blockade Billy 9. Elevation 10. Little Sisters of Eluria Uhm, yes, I did the list without looking up, what the novellas are. I really liked "Ur", but I don't know if I liked it enough for the Top Ten. "Hearts in Atlantis" could also be in this ... perhaps I should reread "Life of Chuck" - First time I thought more like: Uh, that is weird!

Nice! There are some crackers in your 10!
1) 1922 2) The Mist 3) The Body 4) Mr. Harrigan’s Phone 5) If It Bleeds 1922 is one of the few books I’ve read that has actually given me nightmares it was traumatizing.
