Ranking Records: The Replacements

Ranking Records-The Replacements
Welcome to the fifth installment of this series. Today, I look at the seven studio albums by Minneapolis band, The Replacements. Nicknamed “The Mats” and known for some notorious live shows early in their career, I will also go through the other recordings by the band that need to be in your collection as well.
As always, I appreciate your comments and welcome your suggestions for future bands to cover. If you like what you see and hear, as they say, “please subscribe and share.”

Love that you mentioned the Trouble Boys book. More than a story of a band of alcoholics, it's a story of mental illness. All four of the original members had serious mental health problems and they self medicated to try to cope. Terribly sad book, but such a great read. So well written.

You pretty much nailed the order the same as I would and touched on most of the same songs I love. Solid list.

I agree. My favorite Replacements album is also Pleased to Meet Me. For me, too, it was the first album I bought by the Replacements. I always loved the band after that, and then a big Paul Westerberg fan.

honestly i love sorry ma. it was the album that got me into the replacements and will probably rank as my 3rd favorite. there are some gripes on the record but some notable tracks are some of my favorites in their catalogue (takin a ride, johnnys gonna die, customer, im in trouble, kick your door down). probably some of this comes from bias towards the punk genre but if you take into account what the album is and the direction it went in, its a really solid punk record.

Honestly, ‘If Only You Were Lonely’ is one of the best songs ever written, which easily puts Sorry Ma ahead of Dont Tell a Soul. At least in my opinion, it just doesn’t seem right or even very objective to discount those songs because your not into hardcore. Happy to see anyone talking about this band though.

Such a great band. And Westerberg - amazing writer and yeah - he’ll always exist between worshipped and unknown. But at least he’ll always be great, too :)

Thanks for sharing this Mike. I would have to put Let It Be As number one that was my soundtrack to 1985. I would also have to put hootenanny higher that was the first one I heard when it came out.. thanks for the info about all the unreleased tracks and Rarities I have not heard a lot of those but I will seek them out

I agree. I put Tim first, but honestly it’s really a draw between Tim & PTMM. They’re both perfect.

I got into the Replacements by reading Trouble Boys and listening to their music as the albums were recorded in the book. Thus, my ranking is probably very similar to yours. I like the first couple of albums for what they are, but they aren't my favorite because of the way the music developed.

The thing about The 'Mats live, and the mystique that developed around them in their early career, was their unpredictability. They were a schizophrenic Jeckel & Hyde act -- you didn't know which Replacements would show up. On a good night, it's not hyperbole to say that they were arguably the best Rock band on the planet at that moment in time, but on a bad night, they were doing everything they possibly could to sabotage their chosen vocation -- cutting themselves off at the knees after shooting themselves in the foot

My favorite band. I came to them much later in life and became obsessed. I'm also not a big fan of the early days but still listen to them. My list: Tim, Let it Be, pleased to meet me, all shook down, Hootenanny, don't tell a soul, sorry ma. The ep is the one I listen to the least.

I would rank them in the same order you did. Wished I'd seen them live. I'm a Hiatt fan up to a point (The Tiki Bar Is Open). Do you like his music? That'd be a cool future vid

Nice list. Can't argue with it although I have Sorry Ma... higher and All Shook Down quite a bit lower. Respect the #1 spot for Pleased to Meet Me. Nice choice. It made a strong push for the top spot with me but still gets edged out: 9 - Stink; not much memorable here other than Go and maybe Kids Don't Follow 8 - Hootenanny; Color Me Impressed and Within Your Reach are good but I feel they didn't really have the songs here. Fun record but not one I return to often. 7 - All Shook Down; some really good songs but I don't like the playing on this album much. Especially disappointed with the drumming. Better song sequencing and cutting out a couple of songs would help this album. Too many mid-tempo songs all bunched together. 5/6 - Dead Man's Pop/Don't Tell a Soul - I like the reissued mix better, but it isn't enough of an improvement to make a difference in my ranking. A lot of really good songs. Talent Show is my favorite along with Achin' to Be. I think Asking Me Lies is underrated and could have been a good single. It has an infectious groove even if the lyrics don't seem to mean much. 4 - Sorry Ma...yes, it's fast and loose, but it reminds me of some of the great Stones songs. It's a lot of fun to hear the band really in synch. Lots of really good, funny songs on this album along with what I consider to be one of their best, Johnny's Gonna Die. 3 - Let It Be - I Will Dare and Sixteen Blue are top shelf songs, but this album has 4 songs that feel like filler. I think Westerberg had better material for the next two albums. 2 - Pleased to Meet Me - Not a bad song in the bunch. Even the lesser songs, Shooting Dirty Pool and Red Red Wine, are rip snortin good. I Don't Know is underrated, in my opinion. Even though this is my #2, I probably listen to it more than any other 'Mats album. 1 - Tim - I almost dropped it to #2 because Dose of Thunder and Lay It Down Clown are forgettable, but this album has at least three of their ten best songs: Here Comes a Regular, Swingin' Party, and Hold My Life. And Bastards of Young, Little Mascara, and Left of the Dial might even be top ten too. Haven't ranked their songs yet. Enjoyed this video. Looking forward to watching some more of your stuff! Cheers.

Great Review first visit will check out your blog subscribed. Had a question about the vinyl Let it Be Original 1984. Which is the better issue/label? I see a Twin Tone, New Rose, and Zippo label. Is the Zippo label rare? Any opinion? Thank You

Oh man we can forgive you for not knowing them- their label and A&R and everyone failed to market anything of theirs. Then the boys were drunken wild men and would never self-promote either so it went both ways. Paul’s lyrics are epic though and are deep and meaningful, even the goofy ones. The final album was Re-Mixed after LordAlgee who mixed it originally tried to make them sound like U2 and Bon Jovi. SO you neeeeed to rellisten to it as it was re-released (with the author of that book as a coproducer BTW) as Dead Man’s Pop

Respectfully disagree. All Shook Down is the worst. All of the first 3 albums are better than ASD.
