This honestly might be my biggest issue with Persona 4. Almost all of the main characters feel like they're on the verge of having some kind of revelation about their identity and then someone comes in and goes "Uuuh yeah so Atlus doesn't want you to be too controversial, soooooo here's your new script."

Atlus doesn't have the same writing team behind the new games. I feel like if the guys who did p2 were still around we would have more lgbt+ characters and story.

​@@LunaLi17probably yeah, considering how experimental was persona 2, with Jun being gay, Anna having a crush on yukino (if I remember correctly there was a jp novel where Anna actually confess to yukino) and Tatsuya being Bi. Honestly so suprised to find persona 2 having an actual romance with one of the male characters.

@@cherryhill9055 They tried doing it in P3P with FemC but P3P isn't Canon. FemC is if I remember right bisexual, and so is Yukari. It didn't really change anything story wise, but they did try to experiment a little bit with her.

I mostly agree with you, but when he's going to paint Ann nude (or at some other time, I forgot when) doesn't he seem tempted/attracted to Ann before telling himself something like "no, this is for art!" As if he was trying to push away or ignore a romantic or sexual feeling? I'm sorry that I can't remember exactly where he said this, or what the situation even was but I'm hoping that maybe you know which exchange I'm talking about. I'm not ace though and this might be me completely misunderstanding asexual people. I'd be interested to hear what you, or other more knowledgeable people think of that dialogue from Yusuke that I mentioned!

10:52 I get the vibe that Adachi would be homophobic because he had one bad experience with a hookup and then assumed the worst of all gay people. Like he's absolutely homophobic, but he's definitely tried it before.

i could tell by the title of the video,

ironically enough out of the previous 3 protags P3 hero seems the closest to ace/aro despite the game forcing you to romance all the social links of the opposite gender. they just seem like they just wanna be friends with everyone.

Yusuke is absolutely asexual. I mean, those lobsters..... Also, I headcanon Makoto/Minato as ace biro, for the same reasons you stated. He doesn't care enough to be attracted to people, but since he can get into relationships he can't really be aro. And I mean, in the movie he was much more interested in the crabs in Yakushima than on Operation Babe Hunt. I'm seeing a pattern with aceness and crusteceans lol.

I feel the need to say that that's not necessarily an indicator. Some people have phobias of the opposite sex but are also attracted to them which is honestly really kind of sad. Then again I say I'm straight (or at the very least mostly straight) but I also fall somewhere under the aromantic/asexual umbrella specifically _BECAUSE_ of the incident (s) that causes my androphobia so me saying this really doesn't mean much at all lol.

Lon'qu from FE has a phobia of women because of his friend dying when he was a kid, but he's still able to marry nearly every single woman in the game, so I second that ....but honestly, I can see him dating a dude too. I don't think he'd mind at all as long as it's an annoying af person

@@fedechan6325 Yeah, he's a good example. Another _REALLY_ good example is Guy from Tales of the Abyss (massive spoilers) He was a noble kid who's house was attacked and everyone was killed. He was the sole survivor thanks to his older sister and the maids shielding him with their bodies but as a result he was stuck under a pile of dead bodies for possibly hours until he was found/he got away and as a result he has _SEVERE_ Gynophobia (fear of women, and yes he's literally named after his phobia) and also amnesia of the event in question. But he is still attracted to women (and even flirts with them and is considered to be a bit of a chick magnet) and can even be friends with them he just freaks out if one gets too close to him/touches him and he himself can't touch them or get close to them as a result (unless they're in danger in which case he has no problems saving them). It's played for laughs at first since the girls will constantly get close to him/grab him if he does something that annoys him which causes him to jump back/freeze up and start shaking but after the source of his phobia is revealed they start to cut down on that and he starts to get a bit better as the game goes on although it never really outright says that he gets over it/that he ever will just that he might have the potential to recover.

Kei Nanjo is definitely ace. He has no interest in romance and mostly cares for his butler, Yamaoka. Not sure if everyone finds this true but I think Maya is queer because she's pretty much opened to anyone and anything with a positive mindset. Plus Ulala and her have a huge bond together in Eternal Punishment when Ulala was going through a lot with her lack of self confidence and men, plus Ulala showed a hint of affection for Maya in some parts of the game, which makes Ulala bi.

I think Naoto is more about her own story and accepting who she is rather than a trans story, it's also important to remember P4 was made in 2008 where trans acceptance may have been an issue, but not a particularly relevant one at the time tldr; me me overanalyse vegetable game

Someone that is always funny to me is how careful debates are in persona 4. I see the persona 5 fandom usually given very argumentative stereotypes but bro… never say your opinion on a characters queerness in the persona 4 fandom. That shit is dangerous. It was very silly seeing how carefully you handled the persona 4 cast compared to the others. This is the most accurate tier list tbh

OH HELL YEAH FINALLY i totally agree with ur takes on kanji + yosuke being bi i mean a weird amount of ppl believe that kanji is gay when he,,, kinda tries to make it clear that yeah he very much does like girls? i mean of course some of that is likely overcompensating to combat being seen as a stereotypical gay guy because he’s way more than just his sexuality, but yeah also from what ive seen he acts in kinda similar ways around naoto before and after learning shes a girl (i feel like it was kinda meant to be a joke about being gay before we learned naotos gender just based on what i know about the developers but it DOES feel kinda bi of him to be like that) plus all the bisexuality related references with his character… (theres a lot) also yosuke, i mean he had a whole romance route that was cut at the last second with voiced english and japanese lines and all… similar thing with people seeing him as gay even though he does make it clear that he likes girls its not all overcompensating but the exaggeratedness of it all does point to him not being totally straight sorry for the rant btw i could write a whole essay on this but this is just stream of thought stuff im not gonna proofread this comment its too much but anyways RECAP: kanji and yosuke ARE bi, 100%, AWESOME take 10/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ :)

I hold a very strong belief that Naoto isn't supposed to be trans, by her being a representation of being the gender minority in a certain line of work. It's one of the driving factors for me liking her so much, because she made me feel spoken to during my first internships in more feminine workfields like daycare and such. We are able to debate on If she's bi, cause I am not sure myself on that one.

EP characters: IMO Ulala is probably queer. She dates a lot of men, but her relationship with Maya is definitely a bit eyebrow raising. Katsuya is a cop Baofu is hetero but he's definitely tried it with a dude just to see if he's into and and has decided he isn't

10:29 Naoto does handle important issues, their story just handles different gender role issues, you don't sound all that old, but not even 15-20 years ago gender roles were really strict compared to now, and Naoto's story is a commentary on how some careers were very unwelcoming to women and how it made women feel, which especially in japan is a p strong stance to take at the time. In my eyes, Naoto is a girl, her wanting to be seen as male wasn't a healthy reason, and that's the point. I don't think it makes sense to want someone to be trans just for the sake of it, make sure the reason is a healthy one. Some people just treat it as "trans good" but it really should be "acceptance of people's identity is good" which is very different. This probably come from desperation for representation, as I see more actual representation pop up with Bridget in guilty gear and such, I see this feeling die down a lot more.

you are correct and i really liked Naoto’s story for how it handled gender roles and her being a girl in a male workplace. on the other hand you i feel like you gotta admit, when you think about it with the cut yosuke romance and everything with kanji, p4 kinda just leaves me feeling like ‘seriously Atlus?’ It really looks like they wanted to touch on LGBT topics for the be your true self theme, but were to scared to follow through with it

Im quite late now but it's not due to FEMC's gender but it's because Mitsuru just didn't get to connect with her romantically the same way as Makoto. Besides, the explanation was backed up by her relationship with Yukari alone and not with Kotone.

Fr but Kanji prefers women by his mindset, but he does say it ain't matter and he was just afraid to be rejected. Not to mention, he kinda liked Naoto even before finding out that she's a girl (but yea he definitely wanted her to be girl). On Shinjiro case, they think he's possibly gay cuz they probably ship him with Akihiko (I don't think this ship has the best dynamic).

So I was straight after all." No it was more like he didn't care either way but was still being a bit hesitant back when he thought Naoto was a guy because of the stigma associated with gay men, which even his own friend group does nothing to lessen his fears about it. Anyway, I feel like Atlus really fudged up in their representation of LGBT+ characters and themes in games ahead of Persona 2 because holy heck, I've read fanfiction that handled characters like Yosuke, Teddie, Kanji and Naoto better.
