I noticed you made no mention of Rails and Sails. We love Rails and Sails despite the lackluster reviews. It gets criticized for being a long game. However, it was designed to be a longer, more complex version of Ticket to Ride. Love the mix and hard decisions to make about completing a route via trains or ships.

It is a great game. But I almost consider it a different system or different take on normal TTR. It would be higher up on the list though for me. It’s a good time for sure.

Sounds like I need to pick up the Map Collection 5 with UK and Pennsylvania. Thanks for the recommendation.

For sure! It’s our favorite of all the map collections, and both sides are excellent!

I have played all official maps (including Poland - it's alright), with the exception of Märklin (never had the chance), Team Asia (almost never play with 4 or more) and Amsterdam, and my favourite maps are as following: 1) World Map (Rails & Sails) - the wrap-around style of the map gives it a whole other level of connectivity that no other map in the series have. 2) UK - I love this one for the same reason you guys do, all the technologies and how you get to choose your own adventure in a way. 3) Switzerland - I love the cities-to-country and country-to-country tickets, also I feel this map makes things interesting by only allowing you to spend wilds on tunnel-connections, so it makes wilds only useful for half the map and the other half you depend on grabbing correct colours. 4) Nordic Countries - I am biased here, since this is my area of the world (Norwegian), but I also love how tight this map is. Interesting tidbit for you guys, many of the Norwegian connections on this map, particularly the western costal ones are not actually train routes in real life, but more loosely inspired by boat routes and the like. Also kudos to France for the build-the-map mechanism, the Netherlands for the money mechanism, and India for the round-trip mechanism. As for least favourite, I really, really can't stand Old West - the fact that it forces you to stay in network no matter what just ruins the game for me (it's the one map I will refuse to play again). The city maps are not my thing, they feel like they are over before they begin. I'm not that fond of Europe as the stations makes it too friendly and I don't particularly enjoy having people piggyback of what I build. And while I can see the merit of Japan with more players, it kinda bombs at two (which is the player count I play the most often) due to the majority scoring with the bullet train.

Excellent list! And thanks for the Nordic Countries tidbit. I always wondered how true to form some of these maps are. I imagine Pennsylvania is pretty close to accurate just due to the large density of trains and tracks in that part of the US.

Thank you for giving us your rankings of the maps you have played. One thing, though, that made your rankings hard to follow was when you would say that the next number was further up on the other person’s list. For me, it made it very difficult to have any context of how certain maps placed in comparison with others. For example Bethany’s #3 was Africa, but for Ryan it was #10. At that point it was difficult to remember what was Ryan’s #11 or 9 in order to get an idea of how it rated in comparison to other games in its general range. Or as another example, Ryan’s #7 was one that Bethany had not played and her #7 was further up in his list. That made it feel like she had no number seven, though of course her number seven was referred to later on. In the end, all of your maps were ranked, but it just made it much more confusing. As far as my own rankings go (I have not played Italy, Japan, Germany, or any of the small “city” maps): 14 - Heart of Africa (mean and so tight it becomes unenjoyable) 13 - Old West (only played once so far, nothing that memorable yet) 12 - Marklin (definitely more complex. I enjoy it a lot, but having to set up those little piles of passenger tokens all over the board, and picking them up, etc., just seems to make it too fiddly for what I get out of it. Besides, I was able to sell my copy for a nice profit.) 11 - India (The mandala circles are interesting, but I enjoy other added mechanics much more) 10 - Nordic Countries (I like the freedom to be able to draw more wild cards though you are restricted on how you can use them. Otherwise, nice map for two or three.) 9 - Netherlands (The tolls add a nice little twist, but once again not our favorite mechanic added to a map.) 8 - USA (This is a great introductory map, and for my wife and I, if we just want a lighter, quick game of TTR, this is perfect.) 7 - France (I love the idea of having to choose a track as part of your turn. Better with more players than with two.) 6 - Team Asia (I love that I can play TTR with six players. Team play adds an imperfect communication element that I find interesting also.) 5 - Switzerland (This is a great two player map for us. We love getting loads of destination cards and scoring big points for getting routes between countries.) 4 - Europe (I like the ability to be able to overcome someone blocking you by using a depot to allow you to use their train route between two cities and not lose big on a long destination ticket. That aspect is also good for helping new players overcome mistakes.) 3 - Legendary Asia (We love the mountain routes. You have to keep a close eye on other’s trains. They can eat through their trains much quicker than you would expect and catch you off guard.) 2 - United Kingdom (We love the technologies, though it can make for a slow start sometimes at first if you don’t get the right cards.) 1 - Pennsylvania (I really like the added scoring from collecting stocks. Claiming a route you may not be able to connect to your other trains becomes quite viable so that you can get that last stock to get a majority or create a tie with someone else. The dummy player taking stocks in a two player game adds tension, though it is nice that you can at least have some decision over which one they choose on your turn.)

Excellent list! Thanks for the feedback about the list. I think we were attempting to mimic other top 10 list formats, but in this case it just didn’t work out very well. We’ll try to improve that in future lists. Thanks!

Did you know about the Kickstarter with deluxe trains to use with all the Ticket To Ride games! It is called "Deluxe Board Game Train Sets" and is in the Late Pledge state right now. I am getting one for a friend who loves Ticket To RIde.

Hi, I have just played United kingdom for the first time ( without the advanced technology cards). I agree its a great game BUT i'm not sure about that 40 pointer ferry route from Southampton to New York. I managed to complete all 10 of my tickets of which many were quite long and combined and I still lost to my 13 year old son who got the Southampton to New York route. Maybe I'm just a bad loser but I feel that that particular route should be worth less points or not be there at all? What are your thoughts on this?

  • @RyanandBethany

    @RyanandBethany

Honestly? We rarely went for it. We felt like the numerous technologies needed to make it happen cost too many cards, plus the cards to fulfill it. In our 2 person plays at least, we found that if someone took that route, they were sacrificing too much of the game to be able to recover. I have a feeling that it’s all balanced, and in the end, it works out sometimes and other times not so much. But it’s always tempting which adds to the fun. Lol

The rules I have say you don't need any technology to complete the New York route. We might play it again keeping the NY route as it is but I think the game might turn into a race to be the player lucky enough to complete the NY route first.

  • @RyanandBethany

That could be the case. We played it as you at least needed to have the ferry tech and the long tech. Maybe that’s just a house rule we picked up?

We just played again with the New York route and rules where you don't need any technologies for that route. I went for the NY route and claimed it early in the game. My son still managed to win again but only by a few points. So I guess getting the NY route doesn't guarantee a win after all. The NY route does use a lot of carriages which shortens the game though. I think we will probably play without the NY route next time and see how that plays. Happy New year to you both : )

Thanks for the video. I'm a newbie gamer starting to build a small collection. 🙋🏻‍♂️♟️🎲 Ticket to ride is a super popular classic that seems a good fit. I'm sorting through videos like yours to settle on an option. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm actually leaning towards getting London. 💁🏻‍♂️💂🚞 My thought is London would be good to start learning the game and I like that's it's short and could work as a filler game. (Most of my other games are longer and more involved.) The UK sounds awesome... But I would have to get US or Europe to play that one wouldn't I? Any thoughts? 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @RyanandBethany

Yeah, you'd have to get US or Europe to play the UK map, but it's worth it! London is for sure a great starting point. But if you get that, you don't need to get any of the other city maps, like New York or Amsterdam. Happy Gaming, and let us know what you land on!

I am totally enjoying your videos ... so it almost seems wrong to point out something bothersome. I prefer being an encourager! But I am with Vaughn ... the way you did this was very confusing. It would be your #11 but then you'd say it was higher on the other persons list. I've seen others do side by side count downs, but they have always at least said what the name of the game was ... and usually the one who hit a game first (even if lower) did get to talk about it! Then when it popped up again in the other persons list (higher up) they could add comments or just mention that it had been discussed already. You can delete this after you read it if you wish (no need to leave it up) Keep up your great videos (and do more with your super hero daughter!)

Lol, no worries. We always want to do better, so we love this feedback. It was a weird list because there was so much crossover, but even still, in retrospect, it was a confusing format. We’ve talked a little bit about how to improve it, and I think we’ll have it a little more dialed in for our next list. Thanks! 😃

I really enjoyed the video too. I thought it might have been cool if you did one compromised list together for simplicity. Then, along the way you could individually point out aspects you like or dislike. Ex. "I personally would have ranked this higher because I really enjoyed X." "Well I personally would have ranked it a little lower because I don't enjoy X." That kinda gives a newbie gamer like me an easier way to kind of sort out what might be a better purchase for me. 🤷🏻‍♂️🚞🏆

@@RyanandBethany I ranked by "most played" based on the whole family's input when we ask, "which one should we play?" While we all like it, for some reason it just doesn't get picked very often. That being said, it was one of the last ones added to the collection, so it could just be that after all the others, there is a little TTR fatigue. 🙂
