ringed city dlc actually starts right next to the kiln of the flame from the base game, same time too. The angel butterflies are also a progression of the pilgrim butterflies that were from the base game, the ones that possess the dragonslayer armor. Pygmies are also progenitors of humans, I forget the lore for humans but they are a new form that was likely influenced by gwyn/gods. Filianore was keeping the ringed city in stasis and releasing it just instantly crumbles the entire city, there are no time travels. The reason you can go back to the old area is because bonfires are time traveling, light is time and bonfires are lights across time that you can travel to. This is also why when the fire fades kingdoms and people that were long gone come back and all start converging together.

I'm kind of surprised no one's mentioned just why those areas in DS2's DLCs were such hell. The Cave of the Dead, Iron Passage, Memory of The Old Iron King, and Frigid Outskirts were all meant to be played with multiple summoned phantoms. Those rooms with the statues at the start of each area signify this. Each area has at least 1 NPC summon, and the statues themselves are part of a neat mechanic that channels summon signs from the entrances of the DLCs. This mechanic let people have a taste of the DLCs back when they first came out and not everyone bought them, since you can put a sign down out beyond each DLC's locked door in those antechambers filled with matching statues. Those summoned like this in those areas even get special drops from the enemies in the co-op areas, such as the puzzling stone sword in the Cave of the Dead, Alonne Armor from the boss, and the bone fist in the Frigid Outskirts, to give them a chance to use DLC items without buying the DLC, or for people who want dupes of these items without heading to NG+ They honestly aren't so bad if you roll up with a full squad, save for Frigid Outskirts which is just always terrible because of the Storm and the Reindeers. Also, while I'm thinking about it. Elana has a 3rd summon. if you get *_very lucky_* her summoning will fail and instead of skeletons or a Velstadt clone, she'll summon 3 of the little piglets from Majula.

There's a couple things I'd like to note with DS2, both in and out of the DLC. First, agility (AGL) is a stat that is tied to s, item usage speed (also casting speed iirc) and is primarily increased by adaptability and attunement. Obviously this is a huge gameplay thing and controversy, but nonetheless important to note. Another thing in the base game is that equip load effects fall damage, and on top of the silver cat ring there's an armor set that gives the reduction, the lion warrior set from the shaded ruins enemies. The headpiece only drops from the petrified golden one that doesn't respawn. There's also some furry pants you can buy from the cat in Majula after killing some of the rat bosses. Powerstancing is DS2s dual wielding, and requires 1.5 stat requirement, with different weapontype combos having different move sets, and iirc is based on the weapon in the left hand. For example, if you want to powerstance a 20 STR 20 DEX weapon you need 30 STR and 30 DEX. Long press Y and you should be good to go. Second, Shulva sanctum does have a bonfire, which can be accessed by shooting a button in there with an arrow, and a bunch of the traps can be turned off (like the spikes in the ground). There's also a hidden bonfire most way down the dropdown to Elana (the DS2 special), and the dripblood knight armor which is a pretty solid medium armor set. Third, there are a couple items that give curse immunity in DS2, one of them you get by lighting all the torches in the gutter and killing an NPC invader, the other involves a hidden wall and some parkour after you reactivate brume tower, which is by far less of a pain in the ass. The item is a hollow mask. In that curse part of Brume tower where the invader runs to is where you find the Majestic Greatsword, aka Artorias's sword. In order to get the soul of Nadalia, you have to destroy all 18~ ashen idols and beat Raime. Fourth, not much to note for eleum loyce, but there is the agonizing loyce soul farming. I think it's something like 50 loyce knight souls for Alsana's soul, which you can use to make the sword called Eleum Loyce, which designwise looks a lot like the blades of mercy in transformed. Final notes, in Scholar of the First Sin edition, there's a different ending if you get all the crowns before fighting Nashandra, narrated by the wise ass mystical tree himself, Aldia. The blessings on the crowns are not retained in ng+ cycles so you're still gonna turn back into a zombie. A lot of bosses drop +3 versions of rings on NG+, or you can use a bonfire ascetic, which functionally increases that specific area to NG+, just make sure to use it on the right bonfire. For example, if you use an ascetic on the bonfire after the executioner chariot and kill him again, you get the chloranthy ring+3 (editing a comment with KZread mobile sucks ass)

From that elevator you can then go through that path to the right and kill that sorceress. Though the closest bonfire to that without taking damage is the one at the start of township so that's up to you.

@@BBQcheese you seem to be confusing the dreg heap with the ringed city. They are both in the same dlc, but they are definitely not the same area. The poison swamp and angels are in that part, and btw you can kill the angels and then explore, and even the dreg heap is a decent area. I had the mindset of only exploring first playthrough, and then skipping everything my ng+ playthroughs, but I recently went back and played the whole game like a first playthrough, exploring every last miniscule area and doing every questline, and its the most fun ive had in a fromsoft game As for burnt ivory king, he is located in the best area in the series imo first off. You collect three knights, and drop into fucking hell. Then you have an all out battle. Then the king comes out and its a 1v1 with the most badass character in lore in the series. Plus the ost is magical. Saying its just another ds2 fight is just objectively stupid. Easily the coolest boss in the series

@@firstorderblade4432 I played through ds3 for the first time and reached and finished the ringed city like three months ago. As a person who explores every area during my first playthrough, I can confidently say that the areas were bad outside of the bosses. Like, for the Ringed City itself, some of the enemy placements felt as bad as DS2's worst ganks. An easy example is the two Harald knights on the staircase to the swamp along with the enemies throwing lightning around them, and then the THREE other ones that spawn when you're gonna go to the actual swamp. I actually felt encouraged to *run through them* instead of explore - those three Harald knights are the only things in the game that I've never even tried to fight, as I've always ran through them. The general level design felt lacklustre compared to some of the good areas in ds3, too. I can say that the Dragonslayer fight in the swamp was cool (especially since I hadn't fought the boss version in Lothric Castle yet), that fighting Midir before his boss fight was fun and that the Ringed Knights were fun to fight individually, especially the dual greatsword one, but that's all I liked in the areas (other than the aesthetics of the city itself).

Depends on the theory. The Great One named Kos might not corrupted the villagers. But save them from student freaks who used them as experimental subjects. Great ones are quite interesting beings who care for mortals in their own way. Though they help humans they don't help for free. The most likely event is that scholars want a good experimental ground after getting blood. And this village was chosen. The villagers were massacred and gruesome experiments were put on them. Kos might help them repel the crazy students and become something akin to the god to the villagers. But the students didn't give up and sent old hunters to purge the village for knowledge and that triggered the curse of hunter. Great ones are tragic because they want to have offspring but it's very hard for them to get children. When Kos's pregnant, she might be very happy and completely piss-off when hunters kill her and kill her child in her womb. So she curses all hunters to suffer in eternal hunting forever even in death. (The hunter in the old city was right all along) But the problem emerges, her godly child is still trapped in hunter madness and perhaps another Great one tried to help Kos save her child by grabbing some chosen hunter near the cathedral and sent to help the child Unlike other Hunters who are mostly trapped after death. We were invited to the place to lift up the curse that. *Great ones are immortal beings even kill, they simply lose their body and return to upper realms then simply return to mortal realms as they like* Kill orphans of Kos might be the only way to lift his curse and let him return to his mother or venture to the vast cosmos.

In DS1 abyss area in the DLC , there's a fake ledge that you can drop down from and not take fall damage , then you follow the cat until the area is somewhat open , turn right , go up and you can kill the spellcaster. I always did that because it seemed like a safer option , I didn't want to take damage before fighting Manus. Speaking of Manus , I found him to be relatively easy , taking 8 attempts on first playthrough and like 4 on second. The juggling attack I just rolled backwards twice and I'd wait for it to end before running in to attack. The only attack I struggled with was the encircling magic , but even that wasn't too bad. Meanwhile my friend gave up trying after dying miserably 8 times without taking 3 bars of his hp down and killed him with the bow exploit. He then called me a noob after getting hit by Manus twice after killing him , and proceeded to spam "skill issue" every 5 seconds , while I just played it cool and said "exploit abuser" back. Worst part is he beat the game like 5 times at that point , so I still wonder how is Manus difficult for him. Also , I wonder how is Manus difficult for most people , on my first playthrough , I struggled far more against the Gargoyles (15 attempts) , Bed (10 attempts) , Ornstein and Smough (15 attempts) , Kalameet (10 attempts) and Artorias (I gave up counting after 20).

The "DS2 backstab junkpunch" is in fact supposed to be able to be broken out of because it was added as a balancing feature to stop PvP "lagstabs" wherein you get backstabbed from far away with no visual indicator because of lag, in DS2 however since the junkpunch has to finish first it(the fact that you can break out of it) gives a little more leeway leading to less backstabs that shouldn't have connected, y'know?

the good thing about the hell areas in DS2 is that if you're getting absolutely shafted constantly, most enemies in the game will stop respawning after you kill them 12 times. So you can either brute force your way to the boss until you kill it, brute force your way through all the enemies to the boss until you kill it, or you can kick back for a bit and farm up some souls while getting rid of all the pesky bees in your way. It's a really nice design that actually helps when the player gets hardstuck against a boss and i used it very much on my first playthrough of the game. By the time i killed regular smelter in iron keep, there were no more knights between the first bonfire and him lol. That was way back when it first came out though and there wasn't this level of content and how best to progress through the game. Also the reason why the 1st cat fight was so basic is because theres a fight with 2 of them later on. Also they didnt get rid of the feature where you lose max health when you die going forward, they just disguised it by giving you "extra" max health when you're embered in 3. Lotta complaints given about dark souls 2 and its design from a lotta people who don't give the game any actual thought or never actually learned anything about it. Most people dont use the 75% health ring, they just pop an effigy and get on with it.

In my first playtrough i barely managed to defeat friede with the help of the gael summon on the entrance. She was very hard for me, because with a melee build its hard not to get caught by her. Also this fight has 3 phases which is a real test of endurance. All the hours i wasted on her i was asking myself: Why are there 3 phases anyway? The end of the second fight was a good note to end on. But to be honest it was pretty badass how she rises again while being covered in black flames. In NG+ i relocated my stats and did a moonlight greatsword magic hybrid build. At this point the fight was a complete joke, because the crystal spear spell staggers her everytime, when you shoot it at the time she starts her attack animation. Basically she just stands there and get stunlocked to death if done right. Then i knew why this fight had 3 phases, because with the right build this is such a easy bossfight and they had to make this an resource draining battle to crank up the difficulty somehow.

Miyazaki stated - about the Ludwig phases in The Old Hunters DLC for Bloodborne - that Ludwig is an example of the adage "It is easier to fight a fellow trained opponent as a trained fighter, than a wild-erratic-untrained and feral opponent, that becomes, completely unpredictable and equally as dangerous."

Okay in second phase orphan likes to throw the balls and then he jumps and you have have dodge backwards in the opposite direction. It’s the same every time and very predictable. You can avoid being pushed against the wall by running out into the water in his arena. It’s a massive open space.

Sir Alonne and Knight Artorias are the best bosses in the series. Also the reason your having an easy time with Artorias and the guardian is because you're using the strongest sword in DS1.

Another good thing about The Old Hunters is that its only $20! The base game is also $20 so $40 total, so cheap for such an amazing game!

I think I kinda just agree 100% with your ranking of the dlc's. Ringed city's level design is a little disappointing though. It's ridiculously disappointing that we barely get to explore the city. Just feels rather boring, even though the set pieces are great and the ringed city knights are cool to fight *individually*

Not to mention that before first meeting Midir you basically get a glorified poison swamp without the poison. It's just flat open space with a couple structures, enemies, and the dragonslayer armour refight. Probably my least favorite part of the Ringed City.

I mean, it's a lot of hard work creating detailed levels. In my opinion, the duration of the dlc is ideal. No need to make all games open world lol. You have a clear goal of ending this world, not wandering around town looking like a tourist, lol.

  • @jankbunky4279

@LuM4rex except the dreg heap and the abyss swamp *do* get quite some space allocated to them. I'm not asking for a huge open world, but in a 15 dollar DLC called *the Ringed City* it's not crazy to expect to be able to explore the Ringed city somewhat. It looks huuuge from a distance, but you basically go through a single street with some tiny side branches. The first bonfire after going with the gargoyle Taxi is basically just there as a starting checkpoint, and you quickly reach the second bonfire after the first giant. From this second bonfire you quickly enter the city streets, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure from this bonfire All the way to the swamp you find no bonfires or shortcuts. I really think enough exploration to put 1 or 2 shortcuts in there would've elevated this location from feeling like a single street In a city to feeling like you've actually explored the city. And actually, you're also looking for the big stone that Lapp wants, and some sort of side quest could've easily been tied to the lady behind the door.

I literally got an old ps4 off ebay just to play Bloodborne (and then all the other souls games). It was cheap and worth it, the game is so good and now in my top 3 favorite games of all time. If you can find an old PS4, I would recommend playing it. All the Soulsborne games go on sale for half price pretty often on the ps store which is nice too. The flow of that games combat almost made it hard for me to start Dark Souls, but I learned to embrace the roll vs the dodge.

i really liked ds2 dlc areas felt much more put togheter and better looknig thna most of the game. fun thing is i played through it like 3 times on different character it wasnt until i got sotfs where 50 hours in i read on fextralife you could actually combat the ghost warriors and suddenly it became alot easier. also th eonly time i ever beat sinh was with a bow and 700 arrows. since i could never reach him in melee sicne th efucker flew off everytime i even got clsoe actually really miss that ds2 had several parts where you could do stuff outside th ebossfight to get it easier like lighting the room for the sinner or using a ballista or lure the dragonrider to fall off the platform

The shitty boss runs in ds2 were all meant to be done co op. It's extremely stupid that each dlc has a "co op only" boss. Most people don't wanna summon npcs or real people. The demon prince also has two different forms depending on which of the twins you kill first. This guy picked the MUCH harder form, the laser form is much more consistent and "fair".

I wouldn't say coop centric areas are stupid but it sure would be nice if they could have made it more obvious. Especially that SOTFS just remove one of the main mechanics behind it.
