16:20 Interesting thing about the giant infinite creatures. There’s a glitch where you can use the void wisp’s Secret hover ability (that you can only activate if used to teleport and you land above a death pit) you can actually walk inside those things arms (since he never hit them they don’t have collision) and on the inside they actually have a blue water texture instead of the black one we see in the final product. Makes me wonder if those things were initially meant to be Perfect Chaos’ originally?

Wouldn't surprise me. They look so weird compared to Infinite himself and the fact Chaos was brought back as an illusion like the other antagonists makes me think the devs had at least some plan for him. Really wish there'd been a Chaos boss and a Shadow clone boss. The game plot hinted at that happening without doing anything with it, even in the dlc content.

Cannot believe it been 5 years, the disappointment from finishing this game still feels so fresh lol. While many of these levels had great moments & ideas most all of them were SO SHORT. I found that being my biggest disappointment with so many of them. There were a lot of times where I felt like a level was JUST getting good and then it just… ended. Hope the Cyberspace Levels in Frontiers learn from this game 😔

We’ll, the cyberspace stages aren’t the meat of Frontiers so the focus definitely wasn’t on them. They’re not terrible, they’ve reused level layouts from previous games but it’s on purpose here, so it has meaning. But almost everyone who’s played the Frontier’s demo has said the game is either good or great, just that cyberspace is the weakest part.

It’s the most middle game I’ve ever played cause it was so close to greatness and has some amazing gameplay moments but so many of those moments are neck in neck with the disappointing. My main issue with forces is one that a lot of people don't seem to talk about (or at least articulate very well). It's the acceleration physics. When you first start walking, you barely seem to move at all, but then in the span of about 1 second, you hit top speed. This makes platforming feel VERY strange. I either jump right after moving the control stick and barely go anywhere at all, or I wait slightly too long and send myself flying over the platform I was aiming at. I can adjust to this, but I can't help but feel like I shouldn't have to, y'know? It feels like a very specific "game feel" problem that is unique to Forces.

If Luminous Forest was a one-time thing, the only level where you can just GO, it would absolutely be my favorite. I love the idea of a single level where the objective is simply to rip through an area, tearing your way from Point A to Point B, with absolutely no regard for the entire army in-between. As it stands, though, it just serves as a perfect illustration of the issues with Forces. I still like it, but the snake completely kills the flow. Anytime I replay the stage, I just exit level as soon as I get to it.

Luminous forest actually has a short cut a lot of people missed (myself included until I found it on a whim). At the beginning of the section of the windy half-pipe, if you follow the enemies up the side, there's a homing attack chain that leads off the path and a neat short cut with rings and goes straight to the snake I think.

It's also just as stupidly easy and short, they have almost the same issues. The game should have probably been more like Generations, seeing as they basically lied in the marketing to make it out like Forces was a Generations sequel with the same devs. And plus, unlike Colors, Generations is actually decent and feels remotely like a Sonic game in design.

I love mortar canyon. My main problem with it is that most of the level design can be skipped by jumping once or just holding forwards. For example the section where there are three paths has a ramp that lets you skip the whole section no skill required. Would be great as an intro stage. Let players jump around for a quick minute, boost through enemies carefree, and air boost where we see fit to get used to how everything works. As much as Forces disappointed us, I somehow always enjoyed this game from day one due to my attachment of the game from a nostalgic view of 2017, the first time experience being fun and the soundtrack being my favourite in the series with its synth approach. That remains unchanged (but of course, without ignoring its flaws). The floaty double jump and OP air boost really change up how you play the levels and speed run them to your advantage. My personal favourite levels are (in no order): Ghost Town, Arsenal Pyramid, Imperial Tower, Mortar Canyon, Enemy Territory, Null Space, Egg Gate, Park Avenue and Sunset Heights. I do wanna bring your Attention to Forces Re-Imagined mod. It remixes the level layouts with new paths, tougher object placement, and even completely NEW extensions of the stages to make them more akin to 2-3 minutes. That new Sunset Heights man was what I originally envisioned the level would’ve been before what we actually got. I think Sonic Forces was trying to take a more cinematic approach with its automated and dodging level design, but it finally does get realised in that mod with the grand setpieces. The next demo will be at SHC 2022 this month (October).

Mortar Canyon makes me so upset because everything about it is so high stakes, from the music to the visual design to the environmental explosions. But it just ends before the stage really begins. The thing that made me enjoy a lot more these levels are physics improvement mods that really make an upgrade to the Classic Stages (even if I alredy enjoyed them in the Vanilla game, but not to much), they're actually fun to play and I love those multiple pathways to take. You know, I like this game (6.5 is enough for me lol and maybe's because I didn't belong to its respective hype train), but I think that it would have been a great idea to make it as a full 2D game, why? Well, because of the 2D sections, they're actually pretty good and fun to master (I'm not saying that the entire of 3D sections are bad, not at all), seriously, even if they're way to short. For an example, I LOVE the Metropolitan Highway 2D sections because you need fast reaction input for make an insane speedrun full of satisfaction. Great video, as always. See you soon in Frontiers! In Forces he’s trying to escape Infinite’s mind trap to get back out and fight against Eggman, all the while hearing distortions of his friends telling him nothing is wrong. I can't believe it is 5 years since Forces released, and actually these levels of the game are amazing and I do not mind it being short but these levels really has great ideas, I hope The Cyberspace Levels of Frontiers learn from the mistakes of the levels of Forces but this video made me wanna play Forces before Frontiers but I am so excited for Frontiers and I hope it improves on the gameplay of Sonic Forces.

Metropolitan Highway for Sonic, Guardian Rock for the Avatar and Death Egg for Classic Sonic. Those are my favorite stages with each character, and the ones I bothered to speedrun the most, I... Actually liked Forces far more than the Internet made me believe I would, to the point I even bothered to grind 100%!.

This video was a joy to watch, thank you. I have a big soft spot for Forces, had a blast playing it and sunk 50 hours into it in spite of its many shortcomings, so seeing someone talking about each stage in depth was very nice. I might return for a second playthrough and try some of the stomp boost tricks you showed off.

great video! i completely agree with you on these points as someone who speedruns and casually plays forces often classic's levels can be really fun when you know what you're doing, aqua road is tight and exhilarating with great music to boot, metropolitan highway, null space (they should've called it something else since its 90% metropolis lol) egg gate and network terminal are some of my favorite stages in the entire game and the fact null space is as open as it is is insane because i was finding hidden pathways i didnt even think about taking on a different playthrough! the secret/extra stages are a really nice addition and the concept of extra gimmick centric stages could actually work out way more im personally excited for cyberspace but i really hope we get some fun stages to play through and id love to see you rank those as well!

19:55 I will say, this part of the level (with the big drop and a ring of enemies) is EXTREMELY satisfying to use the Cube Wispon in. Probably the only part of the game where it actually feels good to use... It only lasts a second though, but man I definitely recommend trying it at least once.

So glad I found this channel. Great (and perfectly cut) jokes, an easy-to-listen-to voice, and a modest statement of opinions that don't bash you over the head. If I had to ask you to go through another game's levels and rank them, Sonic Generations has some beautiful level design that I'd love to see you tackle.

This video was very entertaining as someone who shares a lot of the same views and experience with this game. your #1 level is the one I had so much fun grinding when the game was new that I held the #1 spot on the in-game leaderboard for a small amount of time. I'm generally not a speedrun person so I'd consider that a win for the level design.

I really liked your video bro. Personally, I like Sonic Forces, it's not my favorite Sonic game, but it's one I can have fun with. Yes, I know it's short, and it has a lot of automation, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. My favorite level is Null Space, because, not only is it 90% 3D, but it's possibly the level with the most alternate paths, plus the Fist Bump theme gives pure adrenaline vibes. Other levels that I like are: Park Avenue, Metropolitan Highway, Sunset Heights, Egg Gate, Ghost Town, Network Terminal, among others. It must be admitted that Shadow in this game did pretty good, not only because he had good levels, but because the character was well written and his participation was adequate, not to mention the good performance of Kirk Thornton, a shame that many people overlook it's.

You should definitely try ranking all the Sonic Unleashed stages! While the werehog ones are still pretty lengthy, they always have tons of variety, and can even be optimized to be completed anywhere from 6 to 15 minutes depending on the stage! And the boost stages are still extremely good, providing amazing speed and platforming like always!

absolutely loved egg gate personally, i used to speedrun that a bunch: dropping down from the rail just before the loop, and falling your way onto the three rail bit was always really fun remember also really liking null space too - especially the music and also remember being surprised that on metropolitan highway, i was surprised you had to actually steer yourself whilst boosting.

Sonic forces had so much going for it with level ideas and stuff and it's a real shame they never fully committed to anything. Best way I can put it is a playground of ideas but it leaves the park early after playing on only half the equipment

I really enjoyed this video. 1.) Because it's a good video and I like your content. 2.) Because it's not just "this game bad" repeated over and over for 30 minutes like most videos I've seen regarding this game. I played it for the first time this year, in one sitting, and while it's definitely not my favorite by a long shot, and there are plenty of moments and aspects I really don't enjoy, there are a lot of aspects I do enjoy and I'm finding myself almost wanting to go back to it. So, it's nice to see a video that appreciates this game.

Interesting perspective on the level design in Forces. Looking at it through a casual speed running lens by maximizing the efficient use of various speed improvement tech was unique and gave me a new found appreciation for the more intricately designed 2D sections. Like you said, I wish we didn’t have to make a choice between short yet slightly complex and long but shallow, but it’s just how it is I suppose. Fantastic video as always man! Keep it up!

Also isn’t it strange how Classic Sonic didn’t get a single bonus level to himself? I feel like a couple of the modern stages would’ve benefitted more from Classic being playable in them. Specifically the ones with no boost capsules

    Interesting opinions. ^^; I'll admit, I wasn't expecting half the levels to have positive spins on them; I also didn't expect you to be such a precise speedrunner. :O I did not know half of those skips in the footage. You did focus more on gameplay than level design, too, so it's always good to see a different opinion on things. ^^;

Fantastic rankings! Honestly, I was surprised to see some Classic stages high up, and your top 10 picks as well were quite good! I've been speedrunning this game since the day it came out, and I often forget to think about the casual perspective of things. This is incredibly refreshing to see, so thank you for this. Also, my personal favorite stage - casually speaking - is Null Space! Funnily enough, Null Space is a god damn nightmare in speedruns, but casually, it's SO fun! I love the insane amount of alternate pathways at your disposal, and there's truly a hundred different ways to play through it. Never gets old!

Yo, just wanted to to give props to you for being one of the only people on KZread to say good things about this game. Sometimes I think I'm crazy because for some reason I keep coming back to this game I don't mind Nintendo switch I've clearly put more than 90 hours on it. This was one of my first modern Sonic games I played. I have colors but I just can't come to terms to finish that. I have Mania and although the gameplay is fun I got bored with it's difficulty in the last level...went right back to playing Forces. Only other modern sonic game I have is Sonic Origins and even though the public reception wasn't the best for it I enjoyed it because we could play the old games on the switch. But still...I enjoy the hell out of Forces. Not cuz of the story either, which I kno is a missed opportunity. Speed running it in handheld mode is where the fun is at, in my opinion. I think if the Developers had more of those bonus levels and focus more on finishing a level as fast as you can should've been more of the focus since the game was rushed in a way. Sonic forces just should have been a speed running game you can create your own character in. One thing they could have added which could have been cool as if you created your own character and try to race Sonic. That would've been a nice touch. Keep the vids coming and showing appreciation to such a fun yet mediocre yet "divisive" game lol
