The weirdest thing is that when I look back to watching these movies for the first time the animation doesn't seem bad at all, all I remember is the magical worlds, beautiful dresses, the music, the ballet performances and of coarse the desperation to BE the protagonists of the movies.

I like that they copy and paste. It helps me create a big, connecting universe with the films, with certain characters showing up in multiple films or have relatives in other films, and the different inanimate object and animal cameos help to determine the relationships and communication between the different kingdoms. Eventually I developed one giant theory about the Barbie movie timeline.

Fairytopia taught me a great lesson when the blue fairy said how she was saving all those seats for "the friends that she hasn't met yet" or at least that's the translation from Spanish. That line really stuck to me as I had no friends growing up but got to make some great friends in middle school who are currently going to be my bridesmaids in my wedding 🥰

one of the things about the princess and the pauper that upon rewatching made me love the movie even more is that erika doesn't decide to marry dominick straight away, instead going on her own to pursue her dream to be a famous singer the best part to me is that dominick never put pressure on erika to not follow her passion, instead encouraging her and making it clear that he'll be there if she ever comes back, which she does after accomplishing her goal!! honestly, that's the best barbie couple to me

The slander on Magic of Pegasus omgggg…It was the first original Barbie story that actually holds up for me (as whimsical and nostalgic Fairytopia is it’s so criminally boring). It was the first time Mattel had the balls to give Barbie a personality other than nice and meek and happy-go-lucky for the purpose of character development. Her angst directly leads to the main conflict when her whole kingdom freezes due to her refusing to listen to her parents. Notice that in every other movie before this, the Barbie protagonist is pushed into the conflict instead of instigating it (the plot happens to her, rather than her motivating the plot). Annika’s parents are justified in their helicopter-style of parenting because they weren’t able to protect their other daughter Brietta from being cursed. They believe that constant monitoring over their only remaining child will keep her out of harm’s way, which is definitely invasive to Annika, but reasonable in perspective. They may be unlikebale but it’s odd you don’t acknowledge why they act the way they do. It’s also not like they don’t allow her to go out - Annika is a minor and SHOULD at least ask her parents before going out. The teen angst in this movie is honestly so real; teens tend to think they are more mature than they actually are and begin to resent their authority figures who mean well but, to their eyes, restrict the freedoms they haven’t yet proved to fully deserve. It is established that Annika has a pattern of disobeying and sneaking out, so the conflict is of her own doing. Aidan is easily my favorite love interest because he is flawed, just like the main protagonist. Annika and Aidan learn to grow together through the lessons of hope and perseverance the journey teaches them. They also have to realize together what acting with a “true heart” really means; Aidan let’s go of the greed that led him to losing his family’s money and only takes what he needs to fix the problem he caused, and Annika is only able to harness the magic of the Wand of Light through the love of her family and kingdom, not the anger and resentment she held when she wanted to destroy Wenlock (I absolutely love that scene cause it’s the one moment a Barbie character flat out says she wants to kill someone lol). It also helps that Aidan is as spunky and sarcastic as Annika. They are meant for each other :3 No doubt that Wenlock is a HUGE creep and an accurate depiction of narcissism, but I honestly think it worked in the movie’s favor. It’s definitely a reach to say they are equal flaws, but Annika and Aidan’s issues were rooted in selfishness as well. Having the villain be the absolute height of egomania and self-importance helps us see better how much of an effort they are making to fix their wrongs out of pure selflessness. I also like that the villain is already a personal enemy to the family. I think it raises the stakes by establishing what he could do to further harm Annika, her family, and her kingdom. It’s also completely valid that you weren’t fond of the ice skating. If I’m correct it’s the only movie with ice-skating being a major skill that the Barbie protagonist specializes in, specifically within the dance-centric movies. Maybe many other kids preferred ballet? 🤷‍♀️ Also no argument can win in defense of Shiver. She’s an absolute abomination no matter how cute she is and should’ve been left in the cloud castle or something like what were they thinking bringing her??? I’m just rambling at this point but this movie is definitely one I learned to love rather than one I was nostalgic for or fond of as a kid. It’s an easy second best behind Princess and the Pauper, but really only because I love the music and songs from that movie. But though both hold equal footing for me regarding their aesthetic and story, interesting and successful character development is what really makes Pegasus stand out. It was the first good non-adaptation movie from this franchise, and I feel like it really holds up!

@@coconut8800it makes sense that you would watch the newer movies because you are younger. 2007 is the same era when I was born and I also seen most of these movies. It just depends on what type of media you consumed as a child and what was available to you. Lucky these Barbie movies were able to entertain me because I gravitated towards a princess/ feminine aesthetic and also considering where I lived my parents were able to find these movies easily on DVD by thrift shopping. These movies aren’t made anymore in the same style but is lived on through the internet. The fandom stays as prevent because of how much these Barbie movies helped shape into the people we are today. You said it yourself your generation wouldn’t really care about these films unless an older sibling showed you them. But the fandom still stays strong because even young children like yourself find themselves watching a Barbie movie ranking. Anyways yes you are correct but in a sense you aren’t. These movies do have value and very much did at the time as long as you make it have value.

One of the best and often overlooked aspects of BP&P is Erica and Dominic’s love story. Yes at the end there’s a double wedding but it makes sure that the audience understands that a significant amount of time has passed during which Erica was living her dreams and touring the lands as a singer. Not only is Dominic 100% supportive of this he doesn’t even try to trap her in a relationship before she leaves. He just gives Erica the engagement ring that was “meant for her” and basically tells her he loves her and that if/when she wants to come back he will be waiting (which I guess some could interpret as emotionally manipulative but I don’t think that was the case here) and eventually Erica does come back and on her own terms. That is such a better message to girls and relationships than most kids movies display. The right one will support you, wait for you to be ready, and getting an SO isn’t the only thing that matters. SOs are just a part of your happiness but your dreams, career, and friendships are just as much a part of your happy ending than just getting married.

But if you have knowledge of historical lesbian relationships, they were often living together and never married men, but historians claimed "they were just friends." Combined with the recent popularity of the cottagecore aesthetic (i.e. living in the countryside, away from society), this is why people from the LGBTQ+ community might see this as a lesbian relationship. I had Nutcracker and Rapunzel on VHS and I wore those tapes out. Especially Nutcracker, I think it was one of the first movies I had that was really just mine and not shared with my brother, I slept in the living room as a kid and I would fall asleep to it year round. It was already a very dreamy movie, but when I watch it as an adult it brings back so many memories of being half asleep and watching it. Especially at Christmas time, sleeping in the living room meant I got to sleep with the Christmas decorations. It feels so sparkly and dreamy. Now I'm rewatching this video while I prep my house for Christmas decorating, I think I'll have to put Nutcracker on when it's time to put up the tree. I remember when Princess and the Pauper came out but I could never catch it on TV, I just remember the commercial would play all the time with the Just Like You song lol. Eventually when I was older I got to watch most of it through KZread clips, but I actually still haven't seen it all the way through. After that I think I was a little old to be very into Barbie movies. But those first few, I'm sure I've seen them both thousands upon thousands of times. I'd just keep the videos playing in the background while I played with my barbies and toys. And I decided I was going to change my name to Clara for a while. I still love that name lol.

little known fact: preminger was voiced by the iconic martin short and that’s probably why he’s the best barbie villain to ever grace direct to video dvds

The relationship of eden and anika in the magic of pegasus; they have a love hate relationship that isn’t rushed or forced. It is a developed relationship and to me it is a realistic relationship 🥰 my heart ❤️

Magic of Pegasus is one of the few movies that made me genuinely laugh, it had so much sassiness, Aiden had so much depth to him, which made their love story so much better than all the others. And it’s hands down the darkest movie, since the villain is in his 40s-50s and going after young women that barely turned 18. I live for the darkness in seemingly innocent movies lol.

Princess and the Pauper is straight-up Broadway calibre. Its plot and songs are so highly developed for a children's movie. I can't believe a company known only for making dolls managed to write a song like 'How Could I Refuse'.

When I was five, Barbie and the Nutcracker was my favorite movie. My sister and I also loved Fairytopia and th Magic Pegasus. The last BArbie movie I watched before I stopped was The Barbie Diaries and I was obsessed with that movie while my sister hated it with a passion. You reminded me of the movies I forgot about like Rapunzal, and the ones that slipped under my radar. It's fun nostalgia, and when I was a kid these movies were some of my favorites, but I don't know if I could ever bring myself to rewatch them 😂

Amazing video! I can tell you put a lot of effort into it. I was obsessed with these movies as a kid. When I was like, 7 years old, my mum bought me my first Barbie doll: Rosella, the island princess. I still have her to this day, in pristine condition.
