If I had to give a review on the character of the saloons in RDR2 it would go like this: Smithfield's Saloon: Typical ideal Wild West saloon as seen on TV and movies. The nicest drinking establishment in town with something for everyone. Try the Beef Stew and don't ask what Lamb’s Fry is. Keane's Saloon: Your typical rundown shack of a saloon. When boom towns sprung up one of the first buildings was typically a shack of a saloon. Keane's in such a building. Doyle's Tavern: Typical lower rung bar found in major cities of the time. But knowing how history goes this bar will probably be a tourist stop in the modern era having somehow survived everything. In the modern version of this bar expect craft beer, expensive whiskey, and a extensive t-shirt selection. Locals avoid this place. Bastille Saloon: Wealthy establishment would probably survive into the modern era but maybe not. Very Art Nouveau and modern for its time. This place really shows off the peak of the Gilded Age. Have the Prime Rib, and thank me later. Rhodes Parlour House: Has that old south look, feel, and charm. A fine establishment if your white. Otherwise you wouldn't be in there. This is where the well to do hangout when they come into town, or a visitor from a train. Old Light Saloon: Very American Colonial in look and feel. The low ceiling, and stone walls make this place feel like stepping back in time to the early 1800s or perhaps the 1700s. Places like this the American Revolution was plotted. Given how the rail has bypassed this town, the location is on the skids. Not that being a river port town helped it. The people who frequent this place are probably river pirates, and drifters. Blackwater Saloon: Nice clean saloon. Very modern and with its mind looking forward to the 20th century. Not much to say beyond that. Armadillo Saloon: Typical Western Movie saloon set in the desert. Like Smithfields but in the desert. In RDR2 you wouldn't want to go here. In RDR1 you probably still wouldn't want to go there. But if you're looking for that classic western desert saloon. Except no substitutes. Tumbleweed Saloon: Slightly rundown, on the skids given how the railroad is going to bypass and kill this town. Shares a lot with Armadillo Saloon, just not full of death.

There is a 10th saloon (kind of) In Emerald ranch there is an enterable building which has the interior of a saloon, however whilst the doors are never locked the saloon never has anyone inside and you cannot order drinks at the bar, play poker or book a room. In fact other than a couple of collectibles the saloon is closed. It would definitely number 10 if it were on the list.

I got to say one thing in defence of Keane's Saloon though, is that's it's supposed to live in the shadow of the newer and bigger Smithfield's Saloon. The barman and owner, Ned Keane, will often complain and compare the two saloons, and reminisce about the old days his saloon used to be the only one in town and be packed every night. If you look around you can find plenty of bullet holes in the walls, a hint that Valentine used to be a lot wilder in it's younger days, before the game's setting. Another hint of the Old West dying. Do I disagree it's place on the list though? Not at all. It's only a saloon I enjoy visiting because Ned seems a lot more personal compared other barkeeps. Rather go to Smithfield's where all the games and life is.

@@filmsbyhen Although I've also rather seen some life in Armadillo, I actually get why it's hit by Cholera. It gives another feeling of the pure Wild West, the Del Lobo's terrorise the town with impunity, and together with the dust storms the town feels really at home in one of the doomiest of Spaghetti Westerns. It also gives some narrative to RDR1's Marshall Leigh Johnson, that without him this town would become a hellhole, and we can see it now with our own eyes. Next to that, it makes Tumbleweed, a town that can fight off the hordes of Del Lobo's, cut off and extremely distant from civilisation.

Yeah definitely. But for it to work, it would be required more of a canteen-tavern-inn kind of vibe. Where food, drink and lounging would be its main thing, for travelers and such. No particular mini games, maybe finger fillet or dominoes at best but a solid place to hang around while exploring the grizzlies. It could have a mixture of people like some very wild gunslingers , hunters and explorers. Truely grizzled by wildlife and terrain of the mountains and their travels/adventures across the country in general. Now i could be horribly wrong, i am relatively new to the game like a month or two. Have finished the game and all but never really explored the entirety of the map mostly because of me being hooked in the story. The grizzlies always was registered in my mind as an empty and uninteresting place, a wasted potential. Only been there for very specific purposes and never to just explore or mess around. Went there for Flaco, for Legendary Bison, hunt Elks and Moose for upgrades and finally get the Arabian horse. And thats pretty much it. Upon these chances i never wanted to hang around, always seemed like a backwater place where i wanted to get away as soon as possible.

I was really hoping armadillo and tumbleweed would livelier and have more to do. When I play RDR I rarely visit new Austin because of how lack luster the towns are. I enjoy setting up camp in an area and living in that region to collect various pelts, meats, and ingredients for tonics. I will explore every detail of that area and find every skunk and ginseng plant around. I will spend several weeks in one corner of the map then when I’ve met my goals I will pack up and trot down a trial until my environment starts to look different, then set up camp and chip away at my goals. Everytime I visit each area it feels new again, even though I know the layout- it’s still a change in environment, plants, animals, loot and things to explore. I almost never find myself wondering into new Austin because of how desolate it is. It has unique plants and animals to harvest, but there isn’t enough there for me to become immersed.

I agree on your list! The way I do it far as my characters are concerned with story mode I love having Arthur and John in a saloon that best matches their age and personality like Arthur is definitely the Smithfield saloon guy and maybe the one in tumbleweed whereas John is Smithfield’s and the one in blackwater! But for my rdo character (when I used to play lol) is the fancy saloon in Saint Denis cause my character is modeled off someone that is in the mafia in Saint Denis so it just feels more appropriate that would be his go to saloon choice

I was similar with a couple exceptions. I had Tumbleweed at 8 as Im never there. I had utility listed as a factor inmy rankings. By the time you get there to Tumble weed you are John and he doesnt have a lot of reasons to be way out there. Its also really tiny in there. Blackjack . Poker for sure so that is a plus and the rustic feel is great; Im just never finding myself there. Blackwater is similar (I had it at 4) and it just feels like a lot less going on than it could have. The Blackjack is, again, a plus, and it looks higher end for era yet still a saloon but I dont find myself heading there ever. There is a distinction between Arthur and John as is relates to saloons for me. Arthur has the gang with the camps, activity there including poker, camaraderie, stories, dialogues and events. There is so much always going on that you can get out to a saloon to be away from it and be the gunslinger in the saloon. John, well John is always alone or quiet. Even later with Beechers Hope built up the family doesn't offer much, not like the gang did. That said when I go to saloons as John, I find myself nostalgic, and go back to the ones I spent time in as Arthur. Other difference is as of my now 6th playthrough I find myself down in Rhodes area all the time. Early in Ch 2 Im there for the fence and gambler challenges. So many times I am done with something and the best place to go is Rhodes. Its grown on me.

I would say you ranked tumbleweed maybe a bit too high, I feel that since theres only one guy with a gun that isn't the bartender or a deputy (i see him at the top of the stairs indoor), and its hard to mess with him without getting wanted, i do get bored of it quicker. However, walking into tumbleweed acting like clint eastwood is always fun. Blackwater one is great due to the fact it has the highest buy ins for any game (tied with saint denis). As well as the establishment looks great.

my favorite small detail in the posh saint denis saloon is the poker game has a higher stakes buy-in, and the whiskey costs 50 cents extra. very small detail but adds a lot to the higher class place they're trying to portray

This dude literally read my mind right up until 1&2. I would only just put Blackwater over Smithfield's because it has both card games. Other than that I completely agree with this ranking.

I love and hate Van Horn for the same reason, and it’s that everyone there really wants to get in a fight. If you wanna get stuff done and relax than it’s frustrating for an entire town to draw revolvers on you but when you’re itching for a fight it’s super easy to antagonize a guy that started it and beat him up.

The best looking saloon has to be tumbleweed saloon. But Smithfield’s saloon is the best just how it looks inside and the barber and everything plus it’s in Valentine. My list is Valentine saloon then tumbleweed saloon then van horn saloon.
