I used to hate the police station, but have grown to like it. The Detective's Office and the Diner rank high on my list.

I think we should get a museum, maybe a hospital, maybe a library, a school, and maybe a courthouse. Maybe not the library because we have a bookshop and it would be pretty much the same thing throughout but a city usually has a library.

You can look at it as I put it there because, in my own subjective opinion, I like the look, story and building experience of 9 other modulars more, which can definitely change over the years. That being said, I think Assembly Square is an absolute need for any lego City. It brings the different buildings together into a cohesive community but I was looking at it more on an individual building and how I thought it looked versus the other, with a bit of that cohesion built into my ranking. At the end of the day, that is how I felt that day and it is all subjective and I respect your opinion. Where would you have put Assembly Square on your list?

It’s so overrated. it barely fits with anything other than the detectives office, every room is boring especially the music studio, and between the three buildings there’s nothing that stands out. And as a bonus the one roof is super lazy, using those dump truck scoops was annoying and still annoys me

@@alexcapriani4341 the left most building, I believe is the music studio/shop. Just push on the exterior wall from the front right side and it wants to cave in. I stand by my decision that it is completely overrated. People like it because it’s the “biggest” and that’s just too simple of a reason..

I like Assembly square because it looks outstanding, has many great techniques and colors, and creates a bit more sidewalk frontage for scenes. I would put it higher than 10, maybe five. I agree the bags in each step are out of control. We needed two full size lunch trays and two dinner size plates to sort parts 😳🥴😣

a school would be great, definitely a museum of any kind (except for maybe an art museum) but the architecture style and unique pieces to include would be really nice. Personally, I want more residential buildings, more townhouses like the one included with the pet shop but larger and more detailed. An apartment building could be a good alternative too. Sure, you can consider houses to be lazy filler, but having them makes great mixed zoning and makes the city more alive. (Also I know it wouldn’t happen but a bodega/corner store/deli would be an absolute banger set)

I love this comment! I really want to make the museum Rebrickable model by I think it’s Brick Artisan on Rebrickable. It takes Assembly Square, the Police Station and the lego ideas fossils so it’s a very expensive set, well over 500 bucks, but it’s so awesome! I really want to do it. But I completely feel you on a school or apartment buildings, I would be in for both of them. More for the school over the apartments in my opinion!

60312 on Amazon goes for 6-7 bucks regularly. It’s not great nor a perfect match for the older style building but I mean for 6 bucks whatcha gonna do!?

Definitely agree about the pool hall in the detective office modular. I think it's one of the best interior rooms out of all the sets.

I know people might disagree, but the bookshop is actually my favorite modular. It’s sophisticated yet modest. It’s also the only modular I currently have. Everyone has their favorite and even if I don’t completely agree with this ranking, I respect everyone’s opinion

Wow, very strong hot takes here. I respectfully disagree with a lot of your rankings, because exterior looks are the most important to be as I install light kits in all of my buildings and they are displayed on a shelf, limiting how well you can see inside. It seems like you valued the interior just as much as the exterior when making the rankings. My top three would be Brick Bank, Assembly Square, and Boutique hotel just for the exterior looks alone.

Also, I think boutique hotel works perfectly placed to the right of the Parisian Restaurant, as the two patio sections look good next to each other and allows you to see more of the back side of the hotel

Nice item, good storytelling. Still, I don't quite understand the Brick Bank, it's definitely in my top 5 :)

It is interesting, because I feel like my mind changes a lot on these. But this year, I am really gravitating towards the Boutique Hotel as my favorite, with the Parisian or Grocer close behind. I will have to really look at these again to see what catches my attention.

Thoughts and opinions on these can vary throughout the years and definitely depending on the layout of a City because something my be your favorite center piece then you rearrange and now something else is catching your eye. Hello there Brickafide! I have a question. I have no modular buildings right now and i am looking forward to buy one. Which one should i buy in your opinion? I'd go for assembly square but im worried that it would look a bit bizarre next to my city sets because city sets are relatively smaller than the modulars. I'd like to hear your opinion too. I only have the smaller modulars like the Town toy store and the noodle shop and some other city sets.

The Town Hall was what got me into the Modular series and I never looked back other than structural pieces I can display around the house like Orchid, Modulars and Minecraft have been my two main series since I can make whole cityscapes out of them. My opinions on the few modulars I have are 1) Town Hall (funnest to build) 2) Fire Brigade (Hardest to build love looking at it and THAT FIRE TRUCK) 3) Emporean (has gotten the most looks) 4) Pet Shop (my wifes favorite love the interior pet shop and all the small details 5) Cinema (my second favorite to the Fire Brigade, Massive Curb appeal, brings the whole neighborhood to life also love Corner Pieces for their Flexibility). Considering my next one right now Really eyeing up Assembly Square, The Hotel and the Perisian Restaurant (but is so expensive everywhere I look =/ )

I really appreciate your comment and all that you shared! I love your reasonings for each set and I can see your love for the good ole Modulars. I will say that Persian is good but after building it, after the video, it has ALOT of detail but it doesn't fill the same modular space (32 x 32 baseplate) like most of the others. Secondly, you have to get Assembly Square before the END OF THE YEAR!!! Supposedly... it is retireing this year but then again you can never be 100% sure with lego but you got to get it before it retires or it will surely be $500 right away on secondary market! Also, the police station is for sure retiring this year! it is on lego's last change section of their website, I would definitely try to pick that one up pronto! I just recently got the Jazz club and its my first modular set, I just got the first section done and I'm on to the second floor, I can't wait to finish it

The cafe corner got me out of my Lego dark age so it’ll always have a special place in my heart… I have all of em except market street (I’m one of the few that don’t count it as an official modular) but my favorite is the detective’s office. Being in healthcare, I would really like a hospital at some point.

I only have the boutique hotel and while I think your opinion is valid I have to disagree, the side balcony definitely gives the city a better skyline from the side and adds a lot of details.

They should do some kind of YMCA building. It could have a gym, pool, juice bar, etc.

I’m not sure why but I really like the bookshop because of the row house design but the thing is it that it actually has a decent exterior

You know what, so do it! It holds a special place in my heart as my first modular (of which sent me down a spiraling deep, dark and EXPENSIVE path to collect them all!). But isn’t that everyone’s experience… 😅

My top 3 out of box no mods are in no order: parisienne restaurant, movie theater, boutique hotel. Prob my least favorites are fire station and town hall bc while necessary are boring. Police station is great for mods.

Boutique hotel was so underrrated

It's a matter of taste. But I really totally don't agree much with this ranking at all haha. Like how on earth does the greengrocer become higher than Assembly Square and Boutique hotel. For me number. 1 I think is the detective's office. Number 2 I put Parisian restaurant. number 3. Assembly Square and number 4 boutique hotel. The funny thing is that if I am not mistaken. All of these modulars are all designed by the same guy. But you can correct me if I am wrong. And I rank all of these mainly in how they look. Not at how much a city needs them or if the building process is frustrating. I rank these with what i consider the nicest details and nicest overall look. The only thing that is a bit different in the way I rank it is Diner Restaurant. Because Diner I think. Is probably the best designed in building techniques. The guy that it designed also does not normally do modular buildings. He mainly builds things like cars and the Titanic if I am not mistaken. He is probably the best Lego designer. And I think I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to think so. He just really thinks outside the box so the speak. Can do things with angles and upside down inside out and whatnot. That you go. What the x@!X??? But with the diner I'm just not to crazy about how it looks. Even though the looks work well with 50s theme. Regarding the town hall. I think it is big and bulky. And that makes it kind of nice. But I don't find an interesting build in terms of how it was designed, The female designer that designed it also did the movie theater. And that one is really underrated in my opinion. It looks better in real life than it does in photos let me first say that. And the one thing that nobody seems to notice or give it credit for is the fact that despite of being such an unusual-looking building. It does fit in any city lineup. It's definitely not a building filler. it is really an eye-catcher especially if you add lights to it. What I recommend you always do with all your building. And I think that is pretty amazing. That you can make something unique and still make it like it belongs to all the other modulars. And I think it i far more interesting then the boring city hall.

Parisian restaurant is my favorite. I work in a restaurant so there’s a personal thing there. Plus it’s simply beautiful. Come to think of it I don’t own any other sets like the Modular’s that depict real every day life. So the things I do or what I’m into personally can be found within these sets. I like boxing and I play music. So the diner is my second favorite. I’m all about the 1950’s diner aesthetic and it all comes together for me. Then my 3rd is actually Brick Bank. I’m a huge fan of heist movies. This is the greatest bank set ever made. A vault. Multiple tellers. Executive office. The story there is great. It’s at number 3 for me because I love those types of movies and I have robbers set up in my bank now. As far as literal play goes, I don’t see what gets better than having the police station and the bank and having a bunch of cops and robbers.

@@brickafide I’m in the process of buying not all of them, but collecting many. I have 4 currently. Looking to get the police station before it retires probably this year, and after that I’m saving up for awhile for Town Hall. There’s others I want before that one but Town Hall seems to be the hardest/most expensive to get. Best to get it before its harder and more expensive haha. I’ve come to love the business commercial style of Brick Bank, Corner Garage, and Emporium. All corner buildings too. They just have a nice “office building” style kind of architecture along with plain and simple colors. Nice to get those along with the other crazier modulars like Diner and Jazz Club.

@@brickafide I have assembly. Highly recommend. To me the left building above the cafe kind of felt like an afterthought but that building and the 2 others are absolutely beautiful on the outside. The fountain is very charming. And if you’re building a city, assembly fills out the space of 2 Modular’s. The other 2 buildings are packed with detail. No wasted spaces or empty areas. I was amazed about everything that was going into these little spaces. It’s not my favorite set of them all, but it’s perhaps the most important. For anyone who gets only one modular ever, that’s the one they should and probably would get. It’s basically a street block on its own.

2 sets you forgot are dr stranges sanctum and the daily bugle I get it why it wasn’t included it would have take first or second by default

Your selections are excellent, though I can’t comment on the older retired sets, because I’ve been only being a lego’er for about 1 1/2 years. I have most if not all the current modular sets, but would LOVE TO be able to buy the older retired sets. I really don’t like to buy from Brick Link. I had a bad experience as I tried to buy from 1 seller, paid my money, but received nothing and never got a response. Can any one suggest how I may be able to buy some of the older retired sets? I would truly appreciator r help and guidance. Thank you a lot garylatz

I have had success with eBay. They have good buyer protection just make sure returns are eligible. Otherwise going to lego conventions is another great way or lego resell places like bricks and Minifigs. I would stay away from Facebook market place or similar, you can get a good deal but there’s just so many scams, never send money before hand

I like alot of your rankings but would definitely place town hall well down the list. Very little story, interior is lacking and despite its size the exterior is bland when compared to some of the other modulars. I would also place boutique hotel much higher and probably place the corner garage and grand emporium slightly lower. Thanks for your vid

I am a little split on the museum. I haven’t purchased it yet because focusing on Christmas gifts and such but I will get it eventually. It’s tough for me to say, because I love Dino’s and I’ve wanted a museum for my city, so much so I bought another police station and Assembly square to do a Dino exhibit rebrickable model a few months ago, but now not sure what to do…but honestly at this moment, I don’t like the exterior color

The sanctum is good, a lot of interior details and great figures. I’ve always thought it was one of the best until I owned it. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy it and the old MCU, but I do find it a little boring on the exterior. It’s not one that I usually glance at versus others. That being said I would say approximately at half the pack, maybe a little higher than the middle of the list

Personally, I never understand what all the fuss is about with the town hall. The build isn't super interesting and the interior just seems so... bureaucratic, which to be fair is very true to life, it just lacks that humor and love many of the other buildings have.

I feel your thoughts here and I can definitely see that is how a lot of people would feel. At the end of the day they are all pretty much awesome, their modulars for crying out loud! But that was just how I ranked them this time around. And Town Hall got the top spot because, although they are all good looking, whenever I see someone's City and they have it, it just grabs my attention immediately, even if they have something taller like the Daily Bugle!

I personally think yes, it is a modular. However, Lego doesn't explicitly label it as one from the main line of modular's and their branding. I will definitely consider putting it in a future update list but on the first go around I wanted to make it explicitly the "Modular Theme"

I think Parisian Restaurant is objectively the best modular, but Grand Emporium will always be my favorite cause it was my first. I like the Police Station and Fire Brigade, but feel like they date your city by being so old-timey. Grand Emporium feels like it could exist in any time period, to me at least

Unpopular opinion: I dislike the townhall, it just doesn't really interest me and I feel like it just looks awkward places in cities due to its size and also somehow feels a bit flat to me? I'm not really sure how that makes sense cause it's not like the facade is actually flat, but it just feels like it lacks dimension lol, idk I'm just not really a fan and would prefer something with a bit more curb appeal, just something with a bit more visual interest, but that's just my take

I respect your opinion and I can see where you are coming from. I think I like it’s size and it also really appeals to me because it’s one that I really want to own just haven’t forfeited the cash yet so maybe that has something to do with my feelings on it. It just always one of the first things that catches my eye when I see it in a city

@brickafide that makes perfect sense, I'm a bit like that with the downtown dinner, it looks incredible and the overall uniqueness of the design always caught my eye, on its own I think it looks great, but next to other modulars I have to admit it looks a bit awkward, it's like a corner building that was just given up on and made a regular building last minute lol, but I've always just been drawn to it and overlooked certain aspects so I for sure get what you're syaing, I do gotta admit tho, the townhall for sure does get my attention everytime I see it in a city, it is definitely a stand out building

Pet shop should be higher.

Thanks for your opinion! I would love for it to be higher but the final product just doesn’t do it enough for me

My favourite one was the Emporium because the billboard looks cool and I am a severe shopaholic also I like the "shop" on top of that the colour scheme looks really nice! BUT I have to disagree that you placed Assembly Square 10th THAT is a crime. I also do not know why you added the Town hall as 1 it honestly looks kinda ugly

I do like the emporium, it sets behind me at my desk and so does the Town Hall. IDK I just love the Town hall and as for Assembly Square, I think it ranked it lower than it could have been placed because I do believe it is still a little overhyped, at least in todays time.

I generally don't like set ranking videos because they are all subjective based upon the authors personal opinion. That said, I completely disagree with most of your list. Palace Cinema is at the bottom and my top three are #3 Assembly Square, #2 Town Hall #1 is Cafe Corner. I personally couldn't care less about the interior as I don't play dolly house with them, they are display only. Also, given that the new Museum is out, my opinion is that it's the ugliest color they could have used.

Building experience is one of the factors but use stock photos. I wonder if he built the sets or not.

I think the police station is a better Modular personally, and the connection with the brick bank is a plus.

Rubbish rating review

I’ve built the bank, and the detectives office and I feel they were equally fun to build and according to your ranks they are at the opposite ends (second best and second worst) This only tells me that the entire modular series is awesome as a whole and you can’t go wrong with any of them.
